Introduction: Malocclusion, a common dental issue in children, necessitates early intervention to mitigate future orthodontic challenges. Predictive methodologies like Tanaka and Johnston analysis (TJA) and Boston University approach (BUA) aid in mixed and primary dentition analysis for optimal treatment planning. This study aimed to compare TJA and BUA in predicting the mesiodistal width of unerupted permanent canines and premolars and assess gender-based variations.

Introduction: The biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) is a conservative tooth preparation method with no defined finish lines. Studies comparing the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) prepared using BOPT or horizontal finish lines are lacking. The primary objective of this study was to compare the fracture resistance of ETT prepared using BOPT, chamfer finish line, or shoulder finish line and restored with monolithic zirconia (MZ) crowns.

Background And Objective:  Mothers are the primary caregivers throughout early childhood, playing a vital role in developing their child's oral health behavior, as oral conditions in primary teeth can have a considerable negative impact on the child's growth. This study aims to assess the association between maternal oral hygiene status, caries experience, and oral health behavior (OHB) toward their children.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 226 mothers of children aged nine months to three years visiting the primary health centers (PHCs) in urban (n = 113) and rural (n = 113) areas of Chengalpattu district, India.

Introduction: In recent years, the dental profession's focus has shifted from the therapeutic to the preventive aspect of dental caries. Pit and fissure sealants, optimal fluoridation, healthy dietary habits, and good oral hygiene have been recommended for caries prevention. Many sealant materials are available on the market.

Aim And Background: A child's temperament, influenced by inborn traits and emotional regulation, can impact their dental behavior and caries risk. Parenting styles, such as authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, or neglectful, also play a significant role. Authoritative parenting tends to yield more favorable dental outcomes, while permissive parenting can lead to a higher prevalence of caries.

Background: Dental anxiety is characterized by distress in anticipation of dental visits, which may result in a child's refusal to undergo treatment and, ultimately, lead to parents' reluctance towards dental care.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the tell-show-do technique, modeling technique and yogic relaxation technique in the reduction of dental anxiety among children aged 6-12 years.

Material And Methods: The study was an interventional, parallel-group, single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial conducted on 120 children who required restorative treatment without the use of local anesthesia.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effects of two drill designs on insertion torque (IT) and implant stability quotient (ISQ) during osteotomy.

Methodology: This animal study involved eight female New Zealand white rabbits divided into two groups: Group A underwent osteotomy using standard drills from the Zimmer surgical kit, and Group B used Densah drills. IT values and ISQ were taken during and after implant placement.

Introduction The goal of endodontic therapy is to completely eliminate the infection and stop microbes from infecting or reinfecting the root canal and the periradicular tissues. Amongst the primary microorganisms,  (), a Gram-positive anaerobe, is the main cause of pulpal and periapical inflammation causing root canal failure. Literature evidence shows that the gold-standard calcium hydroxide is ineffective against due to its resistance to the alkaline pH and proton pump mechanism.

Mixed dentition analyses are used to determine possible tooth-size and arch-length discrepancies during the transition from primary to permanent dentition. Prediction methods using a probability table or linear regression equation use the sum of the mesiodistal widths of mandibular permanent incisors to predict the mesiodistal width of unerupted permanent teeth. Racial and sexual variations and sexual dimorphism in tooth size have been reported.

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D plays a crucial role in balancing bone formation and resorption, which is essential for effective orthodontic tooth movement (OTM).
  • A systematic literature review identified six relevant studies that evaluated the influence of vitamin D on OTM, focusing on parameters like tooth movement speed, root resorption, and other secondary outcomes.
  • The meta-analysis revealed that vitamin D significantly improved tooth movement rates, indicated by a standardized mean difference of 1.43, while the effect on root resorption was less definitive.

Replacement of missing teeth using dental implants has become the most frequently performed procedure. Following tooth loss, buccolingual bone width decreases significantly compromising the successful placement of dental implants. Various treatment modalities have been advocated in scenarios with insufficient buccolingual bone width like narrow diameter implant placement, horizontal guided bone regeneration, ridge splitting technique, and osseodensification.

Introduction: Prosthetic rehabilitation with implants in the atrophic edentulous maxilla often requires a bone augmentation procedure to enable implant placement and integration. However, rigid anchorage can also be achieved using long zygomatic implants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surgical outcomes of rehabilitation of atrophic posterior maxillary ridges with zygomatic implants using the zygomatic success code (ZSC) and derive the success grade for the procedure based on the observed results.

Introduction: The thermal changes during light curing of resin-based composites (RBCs) are recognized, but there is a lack of information about temperature changes in pulp tissue under different curing protocols, especially during bonding of orthodontic brackets onto the tooth surface. In the present study, pulpal temperature (PT) variation induced by the use of four different light cure intensities and different durations of cure among different classes of teeth was measured.

Materials And Methods: A total of 80 different classes of human extracted teeth (maxillary and mandibular central incisor, lateral incisor, canine, premolar, and molar) were irradiated at the same distances with four visible light curing intensities.

Background: Residual ridge resorption presents obstacles in prosthodontic treatment, affecting denture stability and the success of dental implants. Genetic elements, specifically the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) 1772C>T variant within the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 subunit alpha (HIF-1α) gene, are hypothesized to contribute to residual ridge resorption progression. Nevertheless, its impact remains insufficiently investigated, especially within the context of South Indian populations.

Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in restorative dentistry.

J Conserv Dent Endod

June 2024

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Chettinad Dental College and Research Institute, Kelambakkam, Tamil Nadu, India.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been identified as agents that disintegrate the collagen structures of dental hybrid layers, resulting in reduced restorative bond strength. Multiple MMP inhibitors (MMPIs) are known to counteract this degenerative mechanism, thereby preserving bond strength and promoting the longevity of resin-based restorations. Additionally, literature suggests that certain MMPI materials possess antimicrobial/anticariogenic properties, potentially reducing the risk of secondary caries development.
