Alterations in Serum Adropin, Adiponectin, and Proinflammatory Cytokine Levels in OSAS.

Objective: The present study was planned to examine the relationships between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and the newly revealed adipokines adropin and adiponectin concentrations that display significant metabolic and cardiovascular functions and the levels of proinflammatory cytokine levels.

Method: A total of 166 overweight and obese male patients with a body mass index (BMI) >27 kg/m were included in the study. Among study participants, 84 were recently diagnosed with OSAS by polysomnography with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥5, and 82 were nonapneic with normal polysomnography (AHI<5) findings.

Allergic aspergillosis in asthmatic patients in a tertiary hospital in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Background Information: Aspergillosis is an alarming complication in asthma, leading to worsening symptoms and irreversible lung damage. It is underdiagnosed among asthmatics worldwide, especially in our geographical region.

Aim: This research was aimed to shed some light on the prevalence of sensitization and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) in asthmatic patients in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Evaluation of knowledge level related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Objective: Our aim in this study is to evaluate the knowledge level of outpatients about obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

Subjects And Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study included 1651 patients and patient relatives who applied to Konya Training and Research Hospital outpatient clinics. Sociodemographic data form and OSAS knowledge level questionnaire were applied to participants.

The diagnostic role of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in exudative pleural effusion and follow-up results in patients with nonspecific pleuritis.

Objective: To assess the diagnostic value of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in exudative pleural effusions, and to evaluated the frequency of malignancy development with long term follow-up of patients defined as nonspecific pleuritis after surgery. .

Methods: The retrospective study was conducted at Yedikule Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey, and comprised data of patients with undiagnosed exudative pleural effusions seen between January 2008 and December 2013.

Studies show that health problems experienced as a result of immigration are important in terms of cost reduction and quality of life. This study aimed to investigate chest diseases (CD) among refugees living in a tent camp and Turkish citizens living in the district Şanlıurfa Ceylanpınar which is located in the South East of the Turkey.

Does advanced lung inflammation index (ALI) have prognostic significance in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer?

Background: Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed and death-related cancer type and is more frequent in males. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for about 85% of all case. In this study, it was aimed to research the relationship between advanced lung inflammation index (ALI) and the primary mass maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and C-reactive protein (CRP) at initial diagnosis and the prognostic value of ALI in determining the survival in metastatic NSCLC.

Objectives: To evaluate the sales trends of inhaler pharmaceuticals.

Methods: The changes in box sales and sales amounts (in Turkish lira) of inhaler pharmaceuticals during the period 1998 to 2015 were examined and sales were projected for the next 3 years.

Chryseobacterium indolegenes infection in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chryseobacterium indolegenes is a rare pathogen that causes a variety of infections in inviduals who are mostly hospitalized with severe underlying diseases. Here we present a case of C. indolegenes in a 69-year-old male with chronic obstructive pulonary disease (COPD) who was admitted to the chest disease outpatient clinic with symptoms like cough, fever and sputum production and followed up on a suspicion of pneumonia.

Prognostic Value of the Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) in Lung Cancer Cases.

Haemogram assessment is a cheap and easy method which can be readily performed for almost all patients. Leucocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts and the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are markers of systemic inflammation. We here aimed to evaluate haemogram parameters of our patients with lung cancer according to the pathologic diagnosis of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Evaluation of dental technician's pneumoconiosis using chest X-rayand HRCT: correlation between radiological and functional findings.

Background/aim: This study aimed to compare high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings with those of chest X-ray (CXR) and to evaluate the relationship of pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters with HRCT and CXR findings in cases of dental technician's pneumoconiosis.

Materials And Methods: CXR, PFT, and HRCT data of 89 dental technicians who were diagnosed with pneumoconiosis were retrospectively evaluated.

Results: The cases of 24 dental technicians (27%) classified as normal (Category 0) based on CXR were evaluated as Category 1 according to HRCT.

Vitamin D Deficiency in Patients Referred for Evaluation of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Study Objectives: A recent study reported an association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and low vitamin D levels. In this study, we measured vitamin D levels in patients referred for evaluation of suspected OSA and sought to identify associated risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. Our objective was to determine whether evaluations of patients with suspected OSA should include routine screening for vitamin D deficiency.

Critical evaluation of the overactive bladder and urgency urinary incontinence association with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in a relatively young adult male population.

Relation between neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and primary tumor metabolic activity in patients with malign pleural mesothelioma.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the pre-treatment blood neutrophil/lymphocyte count ratio (NLR) with the maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) of primary masses on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) taken before treatment in patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and to evaluate the contribution to prognosis. A retrospective evaluation was made of 73 patients diagnosed with MPM in our hospital between January 2006 and January 2014. The SUVmax value of the primary mass on pre-treatment PET/CT, the haemogram parameters (Hb, Hct, NLR, MPV, PLT) at the time of diagnosis, the progression history, the date of the final visit, and the date of death of exitus patients was recorded from patient files PET/CT.

Olfactory and erectile dysfunction association in smoking and non-smoking men.

The studies evaluating the effect of smoking on olfaction reveals opposite results. In vitro and animal studies and epidemiological evidence from volunteers and patients, demonstrated the association between olfaction and erectile functions. In smoking man the reduction of olfactory acuity could adversely affect sexuality.

Prognostic significance of standardised uptake value (SUV ) measured on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in patients with small cell lung cancer.

Certain prognostic factors for small cell lung cancer (SCLC) have been validated, but the prognostic role of 18F-FDG PET/CT still remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with SCLC. We reviewed 142 patients with pathologically proven SCLC who underwent pre-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT.

The Effect of Pulmonary Function Testing on the Success of Smoking Cessation.

Background: In several studies, low spirometric levels have been shown to increase the success rates of smoking cessation, whereas other studies have indicated that pulmonary function has no effects on quitting smoking. Given the fact that there are contradictory results on this subject, we aimed to investigate the effect of identifying airway obstruction via spirometry and its explanation to subjects on the success rate of smoking cessation in the short term.

Methods: Subjects who were admitted to the smoking cessation out-patient clinic, underwent pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and completed at least 3 months of the cessation program following their admittance were included in the study.

Comparison of the Anti-inflammatory Effects of Proanthocyanidin, Quercetin, and Damnacanthal on Benzo(a)pyrene Exposed A549 Alveolar Cell Line.

Phytochemical compounds are emerging as a new group of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer agents that help minimize toxicity in patients with pulmonary diseases. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential curative effects of Quercetin (QC), Damnacanthal (DAM), and Proanthocyanidine (PA) on inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress parameters and to examine the viability of the A549 cell line treated with benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) in vitro. The A549 cell line was treated with BaP, a BaP/QC combination, a BaP/DAM combination, and BaP/PA combination.

Chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and the relationship between sleep disorder and pain level, quality of life, and disability.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and to assess the relationship between sleep disorder and pain, quality of life, and disability. [Subjects and Methods] Seventy-four patients were included in the study and classified as having mild, moderate, or severe obstructive sleep apnea. Chronic widespread pain, quality of life, and disability were evaluated.

Mean Platelet Volume Decreases in Adult Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea After Uvulopalatal Flap Surgery.

Aim: The main purpose of the study was to investigate changes in mean platelet volume (MPV) values in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) who had undergone uvulopalatal flap (UPF) surgery.

Method: The study included a review of the medical records of 37 adult patients who had undergone UPF surgery after being diagnosed with OSAS. The baseline blood parameters of patients, including the MPV and platelet distribution width (PDW) values, were measured and repeated 3 months after treatment.

Primary lung cancer coexisting with active pulmonary tuberculosis.

Setting: Lung cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) comorbidity is a clinical problem that presents a challenge for the diagnosis and treatment of both diseases.

Objective: To clarify the clinical and survival characteristics of cases with both lung cancer and active pulmonary TB.

Design: From 2008 to 2013, 3350 TB patients admitted to the TB Department of the Chest Diseases Hospital of Izmir, Turkey, were evaluated.

Decreased metabolic uptake in tuberculous pericarditis indicating response to antituberculosis therapy on FDG PET/CT.

Early diagnosis and adequate treatment of tuberculosis are important for disease control and prevention of complication. However, diagnosing disease is frequently delayed because of difficulties of bacilli isolation or reproduction in cultures, and also, the decision of the efficiency of treatment sometimes can be impossible. FDG PET has become a promising imaging modality in the field of infection and inflammation, especially for the extension and severity of disease.
