Cancer-related pain (CrP) is a significant public health problem, and opioids are the mainstay of CrP treatment. Considering the persistent problem of inadequate treatment of cancer pain in Turkey, the study was conducted to determine the prevalence of reluctance to prescribe opioids among physicians in oncology departments. The descriptive cross-sectional study included oncology residents and residents without oncology specialization in oncology departments.

Background: Cognitive impairment (CI), which has been reported in COPD, has been related to physical performance. However, the association between CI and upper-extremity functions is unknown. We aimed to compare upper-extremity exercise capacity and grip strength between subjects with COPD with and without CI and to determine the relationship of upper-extremity functions with specific cognitive domains.

Incidence of nosocomial infection and causative microorganism during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in adult patients, a single center study.

Perfusion

October 2024

Department of Intensive Care Unit, İzmir School of Medicine, Dr Suat Seren Chest Disease and Surgery Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences Turkey, İzmir, Turkey.

Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an organ support whose use is increasing in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) cases where adequate gas exchange cannot be achieved despite mechanical ventilation. Patients who were followed up on ECMO are at risk for developing nosocomial infections. In this study, we aimed to investigate the incidence of nosocomial infection and define isolated pathogens from microbiological samples in a single center in Turkey.

Investigation of miR221 and miR222 as Biomarkers in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer.

In Vivo

June 2023

Department of Molecular Medicine, Aziz Sancar Institute of Experimental Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background/aim: MicroRNAs (miRNA) are a class of small non-coding RNAs of 18-25 nucleotides, which regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by disrupting or blocking translation of messenger RNA targets. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents approximately 85% of all lung cancers. Early and accurate diagnosis of the disease affects the probability of success of treatment.

Am J Trop Med Hyg

May 2023

Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Basic Oncology, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey.

Infections are still among the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with lung cancer, which has the highest rate of cancer-related deaths in the world. Microsporidia, which are opportunistic parasitic fungi, primarily localize to the intestine by ingestion but can disseminate to the respiratory tract or can be acquired by spore inhalation. Cancer patients are at higher risk for microsporidia, a life-threatening infection, than the normal population is.

The Spectrum of Infections in Patients with Lung Cancer.

Cancer Invest

January 2023

Department of Basic Oncology, Institute of Health Sciences, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey.

Although diagnostic and therapeutic advances in lung cancer (LC) have increased the survival of patients, infection and its complications are still among the most important causes of mortality. The disruption of tissue caused by tumor mass, management of cancer therapy and alteration in the humoral/cellular immune systems due to both cancer itself and therapy considerably increase susceptibility to infection in cancer patients. Particularly, opportunistic microorganisms should be considered, then applying rapid and sensitive diagnostic methods for them.

Purpose: GOLD 2019 proposed a novel treatment decision tool for follow-up based on the predominant trait (exacerbation or dyspnea) of patients, alongside treatment escalation and de-escalation strategies. This study was designed to provide an up-to-date snapshot of patient and disease characteristics, treatment pathways, and healthcare resource use (HRU) in COPD in real life, and comprehensively examine patients considering GOLD 2019 recommendations.

Patients And Methods: This mixed design, observational, multicenter (14 pulmonology clinics) study included all patients with a documented COPD diagnosis (excluding asthma-COPD overlap [ACO]) for ≥12 months, aged ≥40 years at diagnosis who had a COPD-related hospital visit, spirometry test and blood eosinophil count (BEC) measurement under stable conditions within the 12 months before enrollment between February and December 2020.
