Nano Lett

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Chemo/Bio-Sensing and Chemometrics, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha 410082, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Near-infrared-II (NIR-II) imaging is an advanced technique that enhances deep anatomical visualization by reducing issues like autofluorescence and tissue absorption.
  • Current methods for creating NIR-II nanoprobes are inefficient, requiring significant time and effort, which calls for a quicker synthesis method.
  • The study introduces DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) that can be produced in just 2 minutes and are small enough to penetrate muscle tissue, making them effective for studying metabolic pathways through NIR-II imaging after intramuscular injection.

Haplotype-Resolved Genotyping and Association Analysis of 1,020 β-Thalassemia Patients by Targeted Long-Read Sequencing.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

Innovation Center for Diagnostics and Treatment of Thalassemia, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510515, China.

Despite the well-documented mutation spectra of β-thalassemia, the genetic variants and haplotypes of globin gene clusters modulating its clinical heterogeneity remain incompletely illustrated. Here, a targeted long-read sequencing (T-LRS) is demonstrated to capture 20 genes/loci in 1,020 β-thalassemia patients. This panel permits not only identification of thalassemia mutations at 100% of sensitivity and specificity, but also detection of rare structural variants (SVs) and single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in modifier genes/loci.

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Xiangnan Rare-Precious Metals Compounds and Applications, School of Chemistry and Environmental Science, Xiangnan University, Chenzhou, Hunan 423000, P. R. China.

Adsorbate free energies are important parameters in surface chemistry and catalysis. Because of its simplicity, the harmonic oscillator (HO) model remains the most widely used method for calculating adsorbate free energy in many fields, including microkinetic modeling. However, it is well-known that the HO method is ineffective for weak adsorption.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the causal relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and five cancers (breast, cervical, thyroid, prostate and colorectal) using the Mendelian Randomization (MR) method, with a view to revealing the potential role of LDL-C in the development of these cancers.

Methods: We used gene variant data and disease data from the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) database to assess the causal relationship between LDL-C and each cancer by Mendelian randomisation analysis methods such as inverse variance weighting and MR-Egger. Specifically, we selected Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), genes associated with LDL-C levels, as instrumental variables, extracted the corresponding single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data and analysed the associations of these SNPs with five cancers.

We read with great interest the systematic review and meta-analysis by Cigrovski Berkovic published recently which evaluated the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs). The study identified T2DM as a risk factor for the development of pNETs and linked it to poor tumor-free survival. However, due to the limited number of studies and high heterogeneity, the role of metformin in the diagnosis and prognosis of pNETs remained inconclusive.

ACS Omega

December 2024

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Xiangnan Rare-Precious Metals Compounds and Application, School of Chemistry and Environmental Science, Xiangnan University, Chenzhou 423000, China.

To immobilize the activity and bioavailability of soil Cd, the single treatment only flooding (F) and the combined treatments with flooding plus bauxite residue (F-B) or lime (F-L) were designed to investigate the impacts of different treatments on the toxicity and bioavailability of Cd in contaminated soil. Compared with the single treatment (F), the combined treatments (F-B and F-L) improved soil-associated organic functional groups and aggregated stability in soil. The average particle sizes of soil aggregates increased from 126 nm (F-treated soil) to 256 and 270 nm following F-B and F-L treatments, respectively.
