Immunohistochemical detection of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine: A biomarker of oxidative DNA damage in oral submucous fibrosis.

Background: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is one of the common potentially malignant disorders prevailing in India. The primary etiological factors include tobacco and arecanut, which contain numerous reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS attack guanine bases in DNA and form 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), which can be detected in patients who have diseases associated with oxidative stress.

5-oxoprolinuria (Pyroglutamic Aciduria) and Metabolic Acidosis: Unraveling the Mystery.

Unlabelled: A case of high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) and high level of 5-oxoprolinuria were noticed in an elderly female of 66 years who had multiple risk/precipitating factors and recovered well with N-acetyl cysteine infusion. This is reported in view of its rarity and to create awareness of this entity among medical students and practicing physicians who handles such cases in emergency room or critical care unit. Moreover they have to remember and investigate the cases of metabolic acidosis for 5-oxoprolinuia especially in susceptible individuals who are on paracetamol with or without other precipitating factors.

Introduction: The use of social media to disseminate major communications, particularly for campaigns related to days of health importance, is becoming much popular. The use of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook is gaining an integral place in public life online with hashtag campaigns.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the characteristics of hashtag campaigns related to health in social media and to compare three different campaigns in three commonly used social media platforms, namely, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Post coital hemoperitoneum: The pain of love.

Acute abdominal pain in women of reproductive age is common and frequent cause for visit to emergency department which warrants emergent evaluation. We present the case of a 23-year-old nulliparous women presenting with post-coital haemoperitoneum secondary to a ruptured corpus luteum cyst. This is a rare case demonstrating the need to elicit sexual history in patients presenting with an acute abdomen in emergency department.

Leptin, an adipokine with the primary function of regulating energy balance, is found to mediate insulin secretion and sensitivity in peripheral tissues.

Acute Alopecia: Evidence to Thallium Poisoning.

Thallium is a toxic heavy metal often involved in criminal poisonings and occasionally in accidental poisoning. Here, we report a case of acute, nonintentional thallium poisoning due to thallium-contaminated alternative medicine for its rarity and to create awareness about the combination of rapid, diffuse alopecia with neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms among practitioners, professionals, public, and policymakers.
