Article Synopsis
  • Neurogenesis is being explored as a treatment for brain disorders, with a focus on how astrocytic (star-shaped brain cells) mitochondria contribute to this process.
  • Astrocytic mitochondrial functions are linked to neurogenesis through their roles in providing metabolic support, maintaining calcium balance, and releasing neurotrophic factors, but the underlying mechanisms need more research.
  • Understanding mitochondrial issues in astrocytes is crucial for developing therapies for conditions like Alzheimer's and depression, suggesting targeting these mitochondria might boost brain cell repair.

Oral chitosan-cyclodextrin "shell-core" nanoparticles co-loaded Rhein and chlorogenic acid for ulcerative colitis treatment.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Southwestern Chinese Medicine Resources, Pharmacy School, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu 611130, China. Electronic address:

The food-derived ingredients Rhein (RH) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) have DEMONSTRATED a potential synergistic effect in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the oral co-delivery of RH and CGA faces challenges such as differences in hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, gastrointestinal instability, and inadequate colonic targeting. To address these issues, shell-core nanoparticles were developed for the co-encapsulation of RH and CGA (CP@CGA-FA/TA@RH NPs).

This study developed a chitosan-zein-icariin ternary complex through reversed-phase precipitation to stabilize double emulsions using one-step emulsification method. Results indicated that icariin and chitosan-zein formed spherical microstructures via the rearrangement of hydrogen bonding networks and hydrophobic interactions. All complexes exhibited pale-yellow color and demonstrated single and uniform size distribution.

Hubei Key Laboratory of Insect Resources Utilization and Sustainable Pest Management, College of Plant Science and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan 430070, China. Electronic address:

Diapause is a prevalent strategy employed by insects to survive adverse environmental conditions, by halting development and reducing metabolic activity. Although the suppression of DNA replication aligns logically with these reduced developmental and physiological activities, the role of DNA replication in regulating insect diapause remains largely unknown. In this study, we used the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi, to investigate the role of DNA replication pathway in regulating reproductive diapause.

  • Modified Tou Nong Powder (MTNP) is a traditional Chinese medicine that effectively treats ulcers and shows promise in alleviating ulcerative colitis (UC) by inducing autophagy via the AMPK/PGC-1α signaling pathway.
  • The study utilized UC rat models induced by 2,4,6-Trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid to evaluate MTNP's therapeutic effects through various assessments, including disease activity index and histological examinations.
  • Results demonstrated that MTNP significantly reduces colonic injury and inflammation, enhances autophagy, and improves mitochondrial function by activating the AMPK/PGC-1α pathway, both in vivo and in vitro.

October 2024

Innovative Institute of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy/Academy for Interdiscipline, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu, 611137, China.

The prevention and treatment of hypobaric hypoxia brain injury (HHBI) remains an unprecedented challenge due to the complex oxidative stress response at the damage site. In this study, RuCO phthalocyanine compound (RuPc) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were self-assembled to obtain RuPc-BSA nanoparticles for HHBI therapy. As a nanoprobe carrying and storing carbon monoxide (CO), RuPc-BSA delivers CO to pathologically damaged areas of the brain.

Relevance: Spontaneous abortion (SAB) and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) occur alone or concurrently with increasing incidences recently. Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG) has been used to prevent pregnancy loss for thousands of years, which is recognized as a "pregnancy-stabilizing herb" in ancient China. Baicalin (BA) and its metabolite baicalein (BE) are the main bioactive flavonoids in the root of SBG.

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Southwest Chinese Medicine Resources, School of Pharmacy, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu 611137, Sichuan, PR China. Electronic address:

Diabetes mellitus is a global chronic metabolic disease and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing dramatically every year. Berberine (BBR) from Coptidis Rhizoma has potent hypoglycemic effects, however, the specific proteins targeted by berberine that contribute to its hypoglycemic action remain to be elucidated. In this work, TIGAR (TP53-induced glycolysis and apoptosis regulator) was identified as a direct target protein for berberine using activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) and other chemical proteomics techniques with active photoaffinity probes as chemical tools.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common complication of diabetes that can lead to vision loss, and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the standard of care for DME, but the treatment outcomes vary widely among patients. This study collected optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and clinical data from DME patients who received anti-VEGF treatment to develop and validate deep learning (DL) models for predicting the anti-VEGF outcomes in DME patients based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) combined architecture by using multimodal data. An Xception-MLP architecture was utilized to predict best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central subfield thickness (CST), cube volume (CV), and cube average thickness (CAT).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The lateral root of Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux, or Fuzi, is recognized in Asia for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and cardiotonic effects. Its main active compounds are diester diterpenoid alkaloids (DDAs) such as aconitine (AC), mesoacitine (MA), and hypoaconitine (HA), which are also toxic and have a narrow therapeutic window, limiting their clinical use. Although Aconitum DDAs are known for cardiotoxic and neurotoxic effects, their impact on embryonic development remains unclear.
