Background: This study aimed to investigate the potential association between magnesium depletion score (MDS), a novel assessment of magnesium status in vivo, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in asthma patients.

Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018, 4757 asthmatics were included in the study and were categorized into four groups based on their MDS levels (MDS=0, MDS=1, MDS=2, and MDS≥3). Survival differences between the different MDS groups were analysed using Kaplan-Meier curves, and weighted multivariate Cox regression models assessed the relationship between MDS and mortality.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of electroacupuncture (EA) on blood glucose levels, gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in a rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: Forty Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 8/group) using a random number table: normal control, T2DM model, electroacupuncture (EA), EA + antibiotics (EA + A), and antibiotics (A). The normal rats received a standard diet and saline gavage, while the other groups were fed a high-fat diet and emulsion.

Aim: Given that electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment inhibits lactate production and lactate-derived lysine lactation (Kla) aggravates ischemic brain injury, we aimed to investigate whether the formation of Kla protein is involved in EA pretreatment to alleviate ischemic brain injury.

Methods: EA was performed on the Baihui acupoint (GV20) of male C57BL/6J mice before receiving the permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) surgery. Western blot and immunofluorescent staining were used to observe neuronal survival, astrocyte activation, and protein Kla levels, and the lactate levels in ischemic brains were assayed with a commercial kit.

Article Synopsis
  • In situ vaccines (ISV) can boost anti-tumor immunity by causing immunogenic cell death, but face hurdles like low tumor antigen release and a suppressive tumor environment.
  • Targeting the STING pathway can enhance the effectiveness of these vaccines, and a new ISV called MBMA-RGD was created to simultaneously induce cell death and activate this pathway for prolonged immune response.
  • MBMA-RGD uses a targeted delivery system that releases anti-tumor agents, promoting the generation of tumor antigens and reducing the suppressive effects of the tumor microenvironment, thereby increasing overall effectiveness against tumors.

Introduction: Extensive efforts have been made to explore members of the IL-10 family as potential therapeutic strategies for various diseases; however, their biological role in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains underexplored.

Methods: Gene expression datasets GSE136825, GSE179265, and GSE196169 were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) for analysis. Candidate genes were identified by intersecting differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the CRSwNP and control groups (DEGsall) with those between the high- and low-score groups within the CRSwNP cohort (DEGsNP).

Association between composite dietary antioxidant index and hyperlipidemia in adults based on the NHANES.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Regimen and Health, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Hyperlipidemia, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, can potentially be alleviated by dietary antioxidants. This study explored the relationship between hyperlipidemia and the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), which measures antioxidant intake from carotenoids, selenium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and E. Analyzing data from 27,493 participants aged 20 and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2001 and 2018, we used weighted regression models to assess this association while adjusting for multiple covariates.

Src homology-2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (SHP2) plays a dual role in cancer initiation and progression. Identifying signals that modulate the function of SHP2 can improve current therapeutic approaches for IFN-α/β in HCC. We showed that cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) suppresses IFN-α/β-induced JAK/STAT signaling by increasing the phosphatase activity of SHP2, promoting the dissociation of SHP2 from the receptor for activated C-kinase 1 (RACK1) and binding to STAT1.

P2YR-IGFBP2 signaling: new contributor to astrocyte-neuron communication.

Purinergic Signal

January 2025

International Joint Research Centre On Purinergic Signalling, School of Acupuncture and Tuina, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu, 610075, China.

In a recent article published in Nature Communications (Shigetomi et al Nat Commun 15(1):6525, 2024), Shigetomi et al. identified that upregulated astrocytic purinergic P2Y receptors (P2YR), acting via the downstream molecule, insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP2), play a crucial role in neuronal hyperexcitability. In epilepsy and stroke models, P2YR-IGFBP2 signaling was found to mediate astrocyte-driven neuronal hyperexcitability and so is a new contributor to astrocyte-neuron communication.
