Indole-3-propionic acid (IPA), a metabolite produced by gut microbiota through tryptophan metabolism, has recently been identified as playing a pivotal role in bone metabolism. IPA promotes osteoblast differentiation by upregulating mitochondrial transcription factor A (Tfam), contributing to increased bone density and supporting bone repair. Simultaneously, it inhibits the formation and activity of osteoclasts, reducing bone resorption, possibly through modulation of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway and downregulation of osteoclast-associated factors, thereby maintaining bone structural integrity.

Purpose: Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) is a rare condition typically manifesting within the first decade of life. The primary objectives of surgical intervention for CPT include achieving long-term bony union of the tibia, preventing or minimizing limb length discrepancies (LLD), avoiding mechanical axis deviations of the tibia and adjacent joints, and preventing refracture. This study aims to conduct a systematic review of current treatment methods for CPT to determine the most effective non-surgical and surgical management strategies for pediatric patients with this condition.

High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and is linked to an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The lack of effective treatments for these conditions highlights the urgent need for novel therapeutic approaches. Recent research suggests that the gut microbiota-brain-gut axis plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of hypertension and MCI by regulating the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.

[Roles of ferroptosis in the development of diabetic nephropathy].

Zhejiang Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu 610072, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication of diabetes that can lead to death, and ferroptosis (an iron-dependent cell death process) plays a role in its progression.
  • AMPK signaling can slow down diabetic nephropathy but excessive activation may cause autophagic death, while Nrf2 and HO-1 pathways can protect against ferroptosis; however, these pathways have complex effects.
  • Other factors like TGF-β1 and specific exosome-related signals also contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy, suggesting potential new therapeutic targets to prevent or treat this condition.

The eye is considered to be an immune-privileged region. However, several parts of the eye have distinct mechanisms for delivering immune cells to the injury sites or even in response to aging. Although these immune responses are intended to be protective, the visual acuity can be compromised by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by immune cells, which induce chronic inflammation and fibrosis.
