Aims: There is a lack of tools for accurately identifying the risk of readmission for heart failure in elderly patients with arrhythmia. The aim of this study was to establish and compare the performance of the LACE [length of stay ('L'), acute (emergent) admission ('A'), Charlson comorbidity index ('C') and visits to the emergency department during the previous 6 months ('E')] index and machine learning in predicting 1 year readmission for heart failure in elderly patients with arrhythmia.

Methods: Elderly patients with arrhythmia who were hospitalized at Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital between 1 June 2018 and 31 May 2020 were enrolled.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates risk factors for urogenic sepsis in patients with upper urinary tract stones who underwent flexible ureteral lithotripsy (FURL) at Zunyi Medical University.
  • It analyzes 759 patient records using logistic regression to identify factors like positive preoperative urine cultures and high white blood cell counts as independent risk factors for developing post-surgery infections.
  • The findings highlight that certain bacteria, particularly in female patients with positive nitrite results in urine, are common in cases of urogenic sepsis following FURL.

  • Pudendal neuralgia is a painful condition affecting 5-26% of people and is treated through various methods, but drug therapy often provides limited relief.
  • This study investigates the effectiveness and safety of pulsed radiofrequency therapy alone versus in combination with ganglion impar block in patients who haven't responded to other treatments.
  • The trial will involve 84 participants, measuring pain and psychological outcomes while monitoring for side effects, with analysis focusing on differences between the treatment methods and various patient subgroups.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is one of the most widely used and thoroughly documented alveolar bone augmentation surgeries. However, implanting GBR membranes inevitably triggers an immune response, which can lead to inflammation and failure of bone augmentation. It has been shown that GBR membranes may significantly improve outcomes as potent immunomodulators, rather than solely serving as traditional barriers.

Aortic stenosis (AS) is very common in mid-aged and elderly patients, and it has been reported to have a negative impact on both short and long-term survival with a high mortality rate. The current study identified methods of diagnosis, incidence, and causes of AS, pathogenesis, intervention and management and future perspectives of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Aortic stenosis. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus and CINAHL, using the Mesh terms and key words "Aortic stenosis", "diagnostic criteria", "pathogenesis", "incidence and causes of AS" and" intervention and management strategies".

Department of Medical Oncology, Cancer Center and Lung Cancer Center/Lung Cancer Institute, West China Hospital, Sichuan University Chengdu, Sichuan, The People's Republic of China.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequent type of cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Current treatments for patients with CRC do not substantially improve the survival and quality of life of patients with advanced CRC, thus necessitating the development of new treatment strategies. The emergence of immunotherapy has revitalized the field, showing great potential in advanced CRC treatment.

April 2024

Department of Orthopedics, West China Hospital, Orthopedic Research Institute, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Bacground: The aim of this study was to assess the learning curve of a novel seven-axis robot-assisted total hip arthroplasty (RaTHA) system.

Methods: A total of 59 patients who underwent unilateral total hip arthroplasty at our institution from June 2022 to September 2022 were prospectively included in the study. In this randomized controlled clinical trial, robot-assisted THA (RaTHA) and Conventional THA (CoTHA) were performed using cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis to evaluate the learning curve of the RaTHA system.

Objective: To explore degree centrality (DC) abnormalities in ischemic stroke patients and determine whether these abnormalities have potential value in understanding the pathological mechanisms of ischemic stroke patients.

Methods: Sixteen ischemic stroke patients and 22 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scanning, and the resulting data were subjected to DC analysis. Then we conducted a correlation analysis between DC values and neuropsychological test scores, including Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).

Background: Septic shock is a life-threatening condition that can lead to organ dysfunction and death. In the ICU, monitoring of cardiac index (CI) and heart rate (HR) is commonly used to guide management and predict outcomes in septic shock patients. However, there is a lack of research on the association between CI and HR and the risk of mortality in this patient population.

Interleukins (ILs) are vital in regulating the immune system, enabling to combat fungal diseases like candidiasis effectively. Their inhibition may cause enhanced susceptibility to infection. IL inhibitors have been employed to control autoimmune diseases and inhibitors of IL-17 and IL-23, for example, have been associated with an elevated risk of infection.

Background: Lipid metabolism reprogramming is suspected to exist in pre-cancerous lesions, including colorectal adenoma. Screening colonoscopy frequently reveals chicken skin mucosa (CSM; white or yellow-white speckled mucosa) surrounding colorectal polyps, caused by macrophages engulfing and accumulating the lipids decomposed by colon cells or adjacent tumors. CSM-positive colorectal polyps are associated with various diseases; however, their prognosis varies greatly.
