  • Ubiquitin-fold modifier 1 (UFM1) is crucial for animal development and affects various tissues in vertebrates, with a specific role in the immune response of silkworms.
  • The study identified the gene BmUFM1 in the silkworm genome, demonstrating its high expression in immune cells and its response to infections.
  • Knockdown of BmUFM1 was found to inhibit the replication of Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV), suggesting that targeting UFM1 could be a strategy for controlling this virus and improving silkworm breeding practices.

Aggregation-induced type I&II photosensitivity and photodegradability-based molecular backbones for synergistic antibacterial and cancer phototherapy photodynamic and photothermal therapies.

August 2023

College of Chemistry and Life Science, Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory for Structural Optimization and Application of Functional Molecules, Chengdu Normal University, Chengdu, 611130, China.

The clinical applications of phototherapy nanomaterials are still limited due to concerns regarding their phototoxicity and efficacy. Herein, we report a novel type of D-π-A molecular backbone that induces type I/II photosensitivity and photodegradability by forming J-aggregates. The photodegradation rate can be regulated by changing the donor groups to regulate the photosensitivity of their aggregates because the photodegradability performance results from their oxidation by O generated by their type II photosensitivity.

Metal-Driven Autoantifriction Function of Artificial Hip Joint.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

September 2023

Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Key Laboratory of Advanced Technologies of Materials, Ministry of Education, College of Medicine, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610031, China.

The service life of an artificial hip joint is limited to 10-15 years, which is not ideal for young patients. To extend the lifespan of these prostheses, the coefficient of friction and wear resistance of metallic femoral heads must be improved. In this study, a Cu-doped titanium nitride (TiN -Cu) film with "autoantifriction" properties is deposited on a CoCrMo alloy via magnetron sputtering.

In order to discover novel anti-pulmonary fibrosis agents, a series of novel pirfenidone derivatives were designed and synthesized. All compounds were investigated for their anti-pulmonary activity and characterized by C and H nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Preliminary studies on their biological activity showed that all target compounds showed different degrees of inhibition on pulmonary fibrosis, and most of the derivatives were significantly better than pirfenidone.

Article Synopsis
  • Genome editing has transformed plant breeding by providing precise tools for modifying crop genomes, exemplified in the engineering of disease-resistant rice.
  • Researchers isolated a mutant rice gene, RBL1, which, when deleted, resulted in broad-spectrum disease resistance but also significantly reduced yield by about 20%.
  • Using genome editing, they created a modified RBL1 allele that maintains disease resistance without sacrificing crop yield, showcasing the potential of this method for other crops and genes.

Transport Parameters for Combustion Species Based on cAMOEBA Polarizable Force Field.

J Chem Theory Comput

June 2023

Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, People's Republic of China.

In this study, we report a simplified yet accurate general AMOEBA polarizable force field for combustion-interested molecular species, denoted as Combustion-AMOEBA or cAMOEBA. By eliminating the permanent atomic dipoles and quadrupoles, retaining the explicit polarization and defining the general atom types of each molecule species, including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, peroxides, and aldehydes, a simplified and general cAMOEBA force field was constructed and validated using the benchmark results obtained at the QCISD(T)/CBS level of theory. In this way, the tedious parametrization step for permanent atomic multipoles of each new molecule in the original AMOEBA (PoltypeMP2) force field could be avoided, hence providing the capability of accurate high-throughput calculation for a large number of molecules at lower computational cost.

Human angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a well-established druggable target for the treatment of hypertension (HTN), which contains two structurally homologous but functionally distinct N- and C-domains. Selective inhibition of the C-domain primarily contributes to the antihypertensive efficiency and can be exploited as medicinal agents and functional additives for regulating blood pressure with high safety. In this study, we used a machine annealing (MA) strategy to guide the navigation of antihypertensive peptides (AHPs) in structurally interacting diversity space with the two ACE domains based on their crystal/modeled complex structures and an in-house protein-peptide affinity scoring function, aiming to optimize the peptide selectivity for C-domain over N-domain.

As Phillipson warned, "[l]inguistic imperialism [is] alive and kicking" and has become even more subtle in an era when English has become the global . With this, this conceptual paper aims to propose features of linguistic neo-imperialism by describing how English has continuously spread and retained its power in various domains particularly in periphery countries, whether ex-colonies or non-colonies. Broadly, we highlight these features from the aspects of communication, business, academia, and education.
