Thrombin-induced and proteinase-activated receptor 1 (PAR1)-mediated signaling increases ROS production, activates ERK, and promotes inflammation and fibroblast proliferation in bleomycin-induced lung injury. Stanniocalcin-1 (STC1) activates anti-oxidant pathways, inhibits inflammation and provides cytoprotection; hence, we hypothesized that STC1 will inhibit thrombin/PAR1 signaling and protect from bleomycin-induced pneumonitis. We determined thrombin level and activity, thrombin-induced PAR-1-mediated signaling, superoxide generation and lung pathology after intra-tracheal administration of bleomycin to WT and STC1 Tg mice.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of knocking down Stanniocalcin-1 (STC1) in the kidneys of transgenic mice to understand its role in nephrotoxic nephritis, a condition marked by inflammation in the kidneys.
  • - Results showed that while serum and urinary parameters were similar across groups, mice with reduced STC1 exhibited severe kidney damage, including extensive tubular and glomerular necrosis, compared to mild injury in control mice.
  • - The severe kidney damage in STC1 knockdown mice occurred despite a lower inflammatory response, indicating that the protective role of STC1 may involve promoting survival factors that mitigate kidney injury.

Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) is one of the techniques of acupuncture and is believed to be an effective alternative and complementary treatment in many disorders. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects and mechanisms of EA at acupoint Zusanli (ST36) on the plasticity of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) in partial bowel obstruction.

Methods: A Sprague Dawley rat model of partial bowel obstruction was established and EA was conducted at Zusanli (ST36) and Yinglingquan (SP9) in test and control groups, respectively.

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an endothelial cell-specific mitogen involved in the process of angiogenesis, a crucial phase in tumor growth and metastasis. We carried out a case-control study to evaluate whether VEGF -2578C/A gene polymorphism modulates the risk of developing colon cancer. A total of 110 colon cancer patients and 110 cancer-free healthy people were recruited in the Chinese population.

Aim: To introduce and evaluate the new method used in treatment of pancreatic and peripancreatic infections secondary to severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).

Methods: A total of 42 SAP patients initially underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous puncture and catheterization. An 8-Fr drainage catheter was used to drain the infected peripancreatic necrotic foci for 3-5 d.
