The role of PIK3CA gene mutations in colorectal cancer and the selection of treatment strategies.

Front Pharmacol

October 2024

Department of Anorectal, The Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Southwest Medical University, Luzhou, China.

PIK3CA gene encodes the p110α catalytic subunit of PI3K, which regulates the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. PIK3CA gene mutation is one of the most common mutations in colorectal cancer (CRC), affecting about 15%-20% of CRC patients. PIK3CA gene mutation leads to the persistent activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, which promotes the proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance of CRC.

Anal condyloma acuminatum (ACA) has a high incidence and recurrence rate in people living with human papillomavirus (HPV) (PWH) but there are few studies to systematically characterize its clinical features. We aimed to analysis the clinical features in PWH with ACA and elucidate the risk factors of high-risk HPV infection. In total, 208 patients who had ACA surgically excised were enrolled (including 123 ACA subjects with HIV infection) from December 1, 2020, to June 31, 2023, and the sex, age, occupation, marital status, new versus recurrent, HPV genotypes, and treatment history of patients were involved.

This study aims to compare intestinal mucosal damage and the expression levels of occludin, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin, β-catenin, and plasmalemma vesicle-associated protein (PLVAP) in the gut vascular barrier (GVB) among people living with HIV (PLWH), asymptomatic PLWH, and healthy volunteers (non-PLWH). Three groups were selected for the study: PLWH, asymptomatic PLWH, and healthy volunteers. Colonic mucosal tissue samples were collected via colonoscopy from all participants.

Key Synaptic Pathology in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Genetic Mechanisms and Recent Advances.

J Integr Neurosci

September 2024

Department of Pathology, The Affiliated Hospital, Southwest Medical University, 646000 Luzhou, Sichuan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by challenges in social interaction and communication, alongside repetitive behaviors.
  • The incidence of ASD has notably risen globally over the past three decades, and its genetic underpinnings involve over 1000 genes, highlighting its complex nature.
  • This review emphasizes the role of synaptic pathology in ASD, focusing on genetic variants that affect synaptic structure and function, suggesting that these genetic mutations may be key contributors to the disorder's development.

The role of gut microbiota in intestinal disease: from an oxidative stress perspective.

Front Microbiol

February 2024

Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine Department, Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, School of Medicine, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China.

Recent studies have indicated that gut microbiota-mediated oxidative stress is significantly associated with intestinal diseases such as colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been reported to increase when the gut microbiota is dysregulated, especially when several gut bacterial metabolites are present. Although healthy gut microbiota plays a vital role in defending against excessive oxidative stress, intestinal disease is significantly influenced by excessive ROS, and this process is controlled by gut microbiota-mediated immunological responses, DNA damage, and intestinal inflammation.

Purpose: This meta-analysis was exerted in assessing the anticancer efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel (nab-P) when combined with platinum compound agents for therapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Method: We systematically searched the following seven electronic databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI, Wan Fang, and China Science and Technology Journal Data. Randomized comparative clinical [randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT)] studies on nab-P plus platinum and carboplatin or cisplatin in combination with conventional chemotherapy agents or traditional paclitaxel were searched.

College of Clinical Medicine, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu 610075, China.

The causes of constipation are extremely complex and are still not fully clear. In addition to secondary factors such as organic diseases and drugs, constipation may also be related to genetics, diet, intestinal flora, age, gender and so on. At present, according to the etiology, chronic constipation is divided into primary constipation and secondary constipation.

Lian-Zhi-Fan (LZF) decoction is a hospital-prescribed traditional Chinese medicine botanical drug prepared by the fermentation of decocted Coptidis Rhizome (Huanglian), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), and alum (Baifan). It has been used clinically in China for the treatment of anal fistula, perianal abscess, ulcerative colitis (UC), and other anorectal diseases for hundreds of years. However, due to the complexity of traditional Chinese medicine, the potential mechanisms of LZF in the treatment of UC have remained unknown.

"Lianzhifan solution" (LZF) is produced by the natural fermentation of coptis root and gardenia fruit, and it is a classic prescription for external use in anorectal department. During the fermentation process, the structural evolution of microbial communities led to significant changes in the chemical profile. In this study, we first analyzed the dynamic changes of chemical components as well as the composition and succession of microbial community during the whole fermentation process of LZF, and confirmed the changes of characteristics of nine compounds during the whole fermentation process by metabolic profile.
