RD-OCT net: hybrid learning system for automated diagnosis of macular diseases from OCT retinal images.

Biomed Phys Eng Express

February 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu-603203, Tamil Nadu, India.

Macular Edema is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in patients with ocular fundus diseases. Due to its non-invasive and high-resolution characteristics, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been extensively utilized for the diagnosis of macular diseases. The manual detection of retinal diseases by clinicians is a laborious process, further complicated by the challenging identification of macular diseases.

Department of General Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, 603 203, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, India. Electronic address:

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors are an innovative diabetes treatment that lowers blood sugar levels without insulin. A growing body of evidence suggests that blood sugar levels are tightly correlated with uric acid levels in their blood and urine. To alleviate type 2 diabetes (T2DM) suffering, we tested dapagliflozin on serum and urinary uric acid levels of patients with T2DM and measured its efficacy in reducing uric acid levels.

is a rare autoimmune disease which affects young adults with a male preponderance and can be triggered at any point in life with a classical clinical triad of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage and circulating anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody (anti-GBM antibody). Here we are presenting a case of a young man with hypertension in his early 20s who presented with fatigue, recurrent haemoptysis, breathlessness and decreased urine output without features of infection. He was diagnosed at an early stage of the disease with the help of clinical, serological and radiological findings.

Background Youth must identify their diabetes risk factors because the disease is currently affecting young people at an epidemic rate. The Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS) is a reliable and affordable method for determining a person's risk of developing diabetes. This study aims to evaluate the ability of the IDRS to predict type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and investigate the relationship between diabetes risk and other variables in young medical students.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a prevalent endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, is linked to hormonal imbalances and oxidative stress. Our study investigates the regenerative potential of apigenin (AP, hydrophobic) and ascorbic acid (AC, hydrophilic) encapsulated within poly (allylamine hydrochloride) and dextran sulfate (PAH/DS) hollow microcapsules for PCOS. These microcapsules, constructed using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, are found to be 4 ± 0.

Estimated GFR (eGFR) is calculated using serum creatinine (SCr) based equations which have their own limitations. Novel biomarkers like beta trace protein (BTP) are studied for eGFR estimation. The aim of this study is to determine the serum levels of BTP in healthy controls and chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases and to find out the correlation of BTP levels with that of SCr and SCr-based eGFR formulas.

Introduction It is important to establish criteria to define vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) in India as VCI is an image-based diagnosis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes resulting from age with prevalent vascular risk factors may confound MRI interpretation. The objective of this study was to establish normative community data for MRI volumetry including white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV), correlated with age-stratified cognitive scores and vascular risk factors (VRFs), in adults aged 40 years and above.  Methods We screened 2651 individuals without known neurological morbidity, living in Mumbai and nearby rural areas, using validated Marathi translations of Kolkata Cognitive Battery (KCB) and geriatric depression score (GDS).

A Regioselective [3 + 2] Cycloaddition of Alkynols and Ketones To Access Diverse 1,3-Dioxolane Scaffolds.

J Org Chem

January 2024

Department of Medicinal and Applied Chemistry, Kaohsiung Medical University, No. 100, Shih-Chuan First Road, Sanmin District, Kaohsiung City, 807, Taiwan.

This study presents a stepwise exoselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of alkynols with ketones, leading to the synthesis of 4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane derivatives. Remarkably, without any Thorpe-Ingold induced effect, the cyclization reaction was demonstrated with complete regio- and chemoselectivity, which was solely promoted by cesium carbonate. A wide range of unactivated ketones are viable under these mild reaction conditions, and both primary and tertiary alkynols are compatible with these cyclization reactions.

Background Ascitic fluid culture remains an essential step in the management of all patients with ascites, regardless of their presenting complaints. Diagnostic paracentesis should not be delayed or prevent timely administration of antibiotics, particularly in unstable patients. Hence, it is an essential part of the surveillance system of every hospital to perform ascitic fluid culture and assess the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of bacterial isolates.

Introduction Ultrasound (US) is frequently the initial diagnostic tool for urolithiasis, though computed tomography (CT) remains the imaging modality of choice. However, due to potential overestimations, the accuracy of US in gauging stone size has been a point of contention. This study aims to compare the accuracy of stone size measurements in US, specifically evaluating the utility of the posterior acoustic shadow (PAS) width, against the CT measurements.

Several research studies have demonstrated the utility of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in detecting middle ear cholesteatomas, especially with the non-echoplanar imaging (non-EPI) DWI technique. REadout Segmentation Of Long Variable Echo trains (RESOLVE), a multishot-EPI DWI, has better spatial resolution at a thinner section acquisition with reduced image distortion compared to the single-shot-EPI DWI technique.  In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic ability of RESOLVE -DWI in middle ear cholesteatomas with surgical and histopathological support.
