Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with severe hyperglycemia may require insulin to lower glucose levels in people with coexisting type 2 diabetes (T2D) and COPD. We conducted this study to examine the risk of hospitalization for COPD, pneumonia, ventilator use, lung cancer, hypoglycemia, and mortality with and without insulin use in people with T2D and COPD. We adopted propensity-score-matching to identify 2370 paired insulin users and non-users from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2018.

September 2023

Department of Medical Imaging, China Medical University Hsinchu Hospital, No. 199, Sec. 1, Xinglong Rd., Zhubei City, Hsinchu County 302, Hsinchu, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated how different combinations of imaging inputs and ADC thresholds affect U-Net's performance in segmenting acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesions.
  • Various imaging combos (AAA, DAA, DDA, DDD) and ADC thresholds (0.6, 0.8, 1.8 × 10 mm/s) were tested using 212 AIS patients, revealing significant variations in segmentation performance.
  • The best results were achieved with the DAA combo at the 0.6 × 10 mm/s threshold, highlighting that specific combinations can optimize U-Net's effectiveness for AIS segmentation.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate how physical and mental health, along with different job categories, influence the likelihood of occupational injuries and diseases using advanced statistical methods.
  • - Data was collected from the National Health Insurance Research Database from 2002 to 2013, focusing on six major occupational categories and their specific subcategories.
  • - The findings revealed that certain job subcategories, especially those involving civil service and private organizations, were more prone to injuries and diseases, and that mental health issues like disorders and obesity increased these risks.

Ameliorative Effect of Imperatorin on -Induced Allergic Asthma by Suppressing the Th2 Response in Mice.

Molecules

October 2022

Department of Medicinal Botanicals and Foods on Health Applications, Da-Yeh University, ChangHua 51591, Taiwan.

Imperatorin is a furanocoumarin derivative and an effective ingredient in several Chinese medicinal herbs. It has favorable expectorant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we investigated whether imperatorin has protective effects against ()-induced asthma in mice.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a complicated inflammatory disease, and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. While some reactive oxygen/nitrogen species-related gene products are reported to participate in CRSwNP, a systemic and full analysis of oxidative-stress-associated genes in CRSwNP has not been extensively studied. Therefore, this study sought to catalog the gene-expression patterns related to oxidative stress and antioxidant defense in control and CRSwNP patients.

No previous research has examined cognitive-motor interference (CMI) repeatedly in patients with subacute stroke. This pilot study aimed to report on the changes over time in CMI in patients with stroke who have recently learned to walk with a cane. The assessment started as soon as the participants could walk independently with a quad cane, and was repeated up to six sessions as long as the cane was still used.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how wearing different types of surgical masks (a standard surgical mask and a three-dimensional mask) affects elite weightlifters during intense resistance exercises.
  • Twenty elite male and female weightlifters participated in three different exercise sessions: one without a mask, one with a standard surgical mask, and one with a 3D surgical mask.
  • Results showed that both types of masks and no mask enhanced post-exercise hypotension (lower blood pressure), with participants reporting less discomfort and breathing resistance with the 3D mask compared to the standard one.

The Psychological Impact and Influencing Factors during Different Waves of COVID-19 Pandemic on Healthcare Workers in Central Taiwan.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Chung Kang Branch, Cheng Ching Hospital, Taichung City 40764, Taiwan.

Background: This study aims to explore differences of psychological impact and influencing factors that affected Taiwanese healthcare workers (HCW) during the first and second wave of COVID-19.

Methods: a cross sectional survey of first-line HCW during November 2021 to February 2022: 270 paper questionnaires were issued and the valid response rate was 86% (231). For statistical analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multivariate linear regression were used.

Neoadjuvant afatinib with paclitaxel for triple-negative breast cancer and the molecular characteristics in responders and non-responders.

J Formos Med Assoc

December 2022

Department of Surgery, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: The prognosis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is worse and a major proportion of TNBC expresses epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Afatinib can inhibit EGFR signal pathway; however, its treatment effect for TNBC is unknown. Thus, we aimed to assess the efficacy and biomarkers of afatinib in combination with paclitaxel in a neoadjuvant setting.

The chloroplast comprises the outer and inner membranes that are composed of the translocon protein complexes Toc and Tic (translocon at the outer/inner envelope membrane of chloroplasts), respectively. Tic55, a chloroplast Tic protein member, was shown to be not vital for functional protein import in from previous studies. Instead, Tic55 was revealed to be a dark-induced senescence-related protein in our earlier study.

Cerebral ischemia induces oxidative brain injury via increased oxidative stress. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) exerts anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metal chelation effects through its active polyphenol constituent. This study investigates whether EGCG protection against cerebral ischemia-induced brain cortex injury occurs through modulating lipid peroxidation, antioxidant activity, the essential elements of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu), Zn/Cu ratio, and the hazardous metal lead (Pb).
