Repackaging and tampering with labels of foods to extend their shelf life is an illegal practice, increasingly common in some Brazilian coffee retail markets. Fast, easy-to-use, and low-cost analytical techniques for the large-scale screening of aging time have been demanded lately to fight the growth of these frauds in retail coffee markets. In this work, was evaluated as a provider of relevant regressors, chemically explainable, aiming for predictive models for estimating the aging of roasted and packaged coffees during their shelf life.

A simple, fast, and efficient spark discharge-laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SD-LIBS) method was developed for determining rice botanic origin using predictive modeling based on support vector machine (SVM). Seventy-two samples from four rice varieties (Guri, Irga 424, Puitá, and Taim) were analyzed by SD-LIBS. Spectral lines of C, Ca, Fe, Mg, N and Na were selected as input variables for prediction model fitting.

Rice is the most consumed food worldwide, therefore its designation of origin (PDO) is very useful. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an interesting analytical technique for PDO certification, since it provides fast multielemental analysis requiring minimal sample treatment. One of the most important factors that interfere negatively in coffee global quality has been blends with defective beans, especially those called Black, Immature and Sour (BIS). The methods based on visual-manual estimation of defective beans have shown their inefficiency in coffee value chain for large-scale analysis. Objective: We aimed to assess the surfaces of commercially pure titanium implants (cp Ti) with modified surfaces by laser beam (LS) with and without hydroxyapatite (HA) deposition, without (HAB) and with (HABT) thermal treatment. Furthermore, we have compared them with implants with surfaces modified by acid treatment (AS) and with machined surfaces (MS) utilizing histomorphometric and descriptive histologic analyses.

Material And Methods: Surface topography characterization was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and surface roughness (Ra) before implant installation.

This article reports the development of a precursor liquid crystalline system based on a mixture of monoglycerides (MO) and Cremophor(®) (CREM) that exhibits in situ gelation to a liquid crystalline phase. The effects of different MO/CREM ratios and the water content (WC) on several performance characteristics were investigated with a full factorial design. The formulations were characterized by polarized light microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and water uptake assays.

In the neotropical savannah, Astronium species are used in popular medicine to treat allergies, inflammation, diarrhea and ulcers. Given that natural products are promising starting points for the discovery of novel potentially therapeutic agents, the aim of the present study was to investigate the mutagenic and antimutagenic activities of hydroalcoholic extracts of Astronium spp. The mutagenicity was determined by the Ames test on Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA97a, TA100 and TA102.

Modifications were performed on a biomimetic solution (SBF), according to previous knowledge on the behavior of ions present in its composition, in order to obtain apatite coatings onto Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) without having to use polymer pre-treatments that could compromise its properties. UHMWPE substrates were immersed into a 30% H(2)O(2) solution for a 24-h period and then submitted to a biomimetic coating method using standard SBF and two other modified SBF solutions. Apatite coatings were only obtained onto UHMWPE when the modified SBF solutions were used.
