Acid rain and carbonization are two primary types of environmental corrosion that threaten the health of urban concrete structures over time. However, the coupling effects of acid rain and carbonization on concrete deterioration have been rarely reported. In this paper, four coupling regimes were designed using accelerated simulation experiments to investigate the deterioration properties of white ultra-high performance concrete (WUHPC).

Searching for natural alternatives to replace environmentally harmful chemical reagents in analysis is just as crucial as finding easily accessible analytical tools. To reinforce these concepts, this study proposes a simple spectrofluorometric approach using natural carbon quantum dots (n-CQDs) as fluorescence probes for sensitive and environmentally friendly measurement of molnupiravir, an antiviral drug that was initially developed for influenza and has demonstrated potential efficacy against COVID-19. n-CQDs were synthesized using garlic peels (GP), a waste material, via a microwave-assisted method.

The possibility of using orange peels for the preparation of porous activated carbons by the chemical activation with HPO and the application of the obtained carbonaceous materials as the metal catalyst supports was investigated. Activated carbon and carbon-metal materials were used as the limonene oxidation catalysts. The materials were characterized by the following instrumental methods: the sorption of N2 at-196 °C, XRD (X-ray diffraction), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), XPS (The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy).

The study was carried out to evaluate the availability, use as livestock feed and nutritional value of fruit waste in a few chosen urban (within) and peri-urban (around) areas of West Arsi and Sidama Regional State, Ethiopia. The study areas were chosen using a muti-stage purposive sampling technique and 306 respondents in total-102 from each of Shashemene, Hawassa and Yirgalem-were randomly chosen and interviewed. We used established methodology to examine the nutritional values of six (avocado seed, avocado peel with pulp, papaya pomace, mango, pineapple and banana peels) commonly used fruit waste (FBPs) samples for chemical composition and digestibility analysis.

Hemostatic materials that can rapidly control bleeding without causing secondary damage or sharp pain upon removal are receiving increasing demands in acute trauma treatments and first-aid supplies. Here, we report the development of a dynamic silicone hydrogel coating on medical gauze to enable rapid hemostasis and synergistic anti-blood adhesion properties. The silicone hydrogel can spontaneously form oriented cross-linked structures on fibrous medical gauze through a solution-processing method to achieve macroscopic superhydrophobicity with microscopic surface slipperiness, resulting in excellent anti-blood adhesion with the on-wound peeling force at ~0 millinewton.

The anomalous dynamics of thin polymer films, often attributed to geometrical confinement and interfacial interaction, have aroused considerable interest, particularly with regard to the inherent and processing-induced chain conformation changes. Here, the capillary peeling method is employed to obtain reattached thin polystyrene films with either the substrate or the air side beneath. Compared to traditional dewetting experiments solely conducted on the substrate side of as-cast films, the difference in dewetting behavior between the two sides of films is demonstrated, with the air side showing a faster dewetting velocity in the early stage and a larger apparent residual stress.

The electrochemical corrosion of ductile pipes (DPs) in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) has a crucial impact on cement-mortar lining (CML) failure and metal release, potentially leading to drinking water quality deterioration and posing a risk to public health. An in-situ scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) with micron-scale resolution, microscopic scale detection and water quality analysis were used to investigate the corrosion behavior and metal release from DPs throughout the whole CML failure process. Metal pollutants release occurred at three different stages of CML failure process, and there are potential risks of water quality deterioration exceeding the maximum allowable levels set by national standards in the partial failure stage and lining peeling stage.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is an inflammatory, scarring hair loss that commonly affects postmenopausal women and presents as frontal hairline recession, facial papules, loss of eyebrows, and facial hyperpigmentation. Because of the chronic, progressive nature of this disease and its important impact on aesthetic appearance, patients often consult dermatologists to improve unwanted FFA symptoms. Cosmetic practices including the use of non-ablative lasers, autologous fat injections, and oral isotretinoin can improve FFA-associated facial vein prominence, atrophic indentations, and facial papules, respectively.

Different solvents water, ethanol and ethanol/water (6:4 /), were compared in the extraction of pomegranate peels and seeds (PPS) in terms of recovery yields, antioxidant properties, and antimicrobial action against typical spoilage bacterial and fungal species. The best performing extract (ethanol/water (6:4 /) was shown to contain mostly ellagic acid and punicalagin as phenolic compounds (5% overall) and hydrolysable tannins (16% as ellagic acid equivalents) and was able to inhibit the growth of the acidophilic at a concentration as low as 1%. The preservation of the organoleptic profile of -inoculated apple juice with extract at 1% over 20 days was also observed thanks to the complete inhibition of bacterial growth, while the extract at 0.

High adsorption capacity, reusability and sustainability are the most important features sought in the adsorbent preferences to be used in wastewater treatment. In this research work, magnetic composite beads prepared from fruit peels (nectarine and orange) and alginate (ALG) as biopolymers (NAF and OAF) were synthesized by dropping and pH-precipitation method as alternative adsorbents. By encapsulating the adsorbent using alginate and imparting magnetic properties, the separation of the adsorbent from water after the adsorption process has been simplified.

Background: Macadamia peels are the main by-product of postharvest treatment of the whole fresh fruit weight, they contain various bioactive substances, such as polysaccharides, phenols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponins, and other nutritional and functional components, that are known to have anti-tumor and anti-oxidation functions.
Results: Two purified polysaccharide fractions were obtained (MPP-1 and MPP-2) by extracting with ultrasonic-microwave-aided water extraction and purifying by with DEAE-52 and Sephadex G-50 columns, and then characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and NMR, and the antioxidant activity was also investigated. The results indicated that MPP-1 and MPP-2 were mainly glucose, the molecular weight was 8.

Carbolic acid or phenol is considered a chemical agent that produces intense facial rejuvenation when used correctly, however, solutions containing this substance are dangerous and their action must be controlled. The aim of this study was to collect information on the adverse effects of the use of phenolic compounds for facial esthetic purposes. Phenol promotes the denaturation and coagulation of epidermal keratin proteins, deep chemical peels carried out with phenol, when well indicated and properly conducted, produce incomparable results, however, the ignorant use of these solutions can produce ectropion, keloids, and unsightly scars on the face and neck, in addition, systemic absorption is related to hepatorenal and cardiac toxicity.
