A typology is the useful way of understanding the key frameworks of health care system. With many different criteria of health care system, several typologies have been introduced and applied to each country's health care system. Among those, National Health Service (NHS), Social Health Insurance (SHI), and Private Health Insurance (PHI) are three most well-known types of health care system in the 3-model typology.

The common neurological manifestations of pre-eclampsia include headache, confusion, and visual disturbance; while isolated abducens nerve palsy in pre-eclampsia is very rare. We report one case of a severe pre-eclampsia with abducens nerve palsy at 39 weeks' gestation. There was no specific pathology, except hypertension, and the palsy resolved spontaneously.

To examine the involvement of phospholipase D (PLD) isozymes in postnatal testis development, the expression of PLD1 and PLD2 was examined in the mouse testis at postnatal weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 using Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry. The expression of both PLD1 and PLD2 increased gradually with development from postnatal week 1 to 8. Immunohistochemically, PLD immunoreactivity was detected in some germ cells in the testis and interstitial Leydig cells at postnatal week 1.

The protective effect of Castanopsis cuspidate var. sieboldii was examined on H2O2-induced cell damage. The ethanol extract of Castanopsis cuspidate was found to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and reduce intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and thus prevent lipid peroxidation and cellular DNA damage induced by H2O2.

Aim: To investigate the molecular mechanisms of ZD1839-induced apoptosis in human leukemic U937 cells.
Methods: The inhibition of human leukemic U937 cell growth was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphnyl-2H-tetrazolim bromide (MTT) assays, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and cell cycle distribution. The expression of anti- and pro-apoptotic proteins was detected by Western blot analysis.

Objectives: Serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and/or IgG4 elevation is one of the notable characteristics of autoimmune chronic pancreatitis (AIP). The purpose of this study was to compare the sensitivity and specificity of IgG with those of IgG4 in the diagnosis of AIP.
Methods: From December 2005 to March 2006, patients who were diagnosed as having ordinary chronic pancreatitis of a certain cause (n = 67) and pancreatic cancer (n = 76) in Asan Medical Center were enrolled.

A yellow-coloured, marine actinobacterium, designated SST-45(T), was isolated from sandy sediment under the surface of a beach and taxonomically characterized by physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic methods. The cells of the isolate were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-sporulating, non-motile, spherical cells that occurred singly, in pairs, in clusters or as short chains. The isolate grew at 10-37 degrees C, an initial pH 5.

Nobiletin contributes to pharmacological activities such as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects, but little is known about its effect on melanogenesis. In this study, we found that nobiletin increased melanin content and tyrosinase activity in murine B16/F10 melanoma cells. Furthermore, inhibition of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway with U0216 resulted in inhibition of nobiletin-induced melanin synthesis and tyrosinase expression.

To investigate whether the phosphorylation of cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) is implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the change in the level of CREB phosphorylation was analyzed in the spinal cord of Lewis rats with EAE. Western blot analysis showed that the phosphorylation of CREB in the spinal cord of rats increased significantly at the peak stage of EAE compared with the controls (p<0.05) and declined significantly in the recovery stage (p<0.

Interferon Gamma (IFN-gamma) Inducible Lysosomal Thiol reductase (GILT) has been described as a key enzyme in processing and presentation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II restricted antigen (Ag) by catalyzing disulfide bond (S-S) reduction in mammals. Abalone GILT-like (AbGILT) full-length cDNA was isolated from the normalized disk abalone cDNA library. The 807-bp AbGILT cDNA consists of an open reading frame of 684-bp, encoding 228 amino acid residues.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Korea. The aim of this study was to estimate lung cancer risk of cigarette smoking in Korean men by a 10-yr follow-up prospective cohort study using the primary databases. The number of subjects was 14,272 men, who had full information of smoking habits among participants in the Seoul Male Cancer Cohort Study (SMCC).

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the population-attributable risk (PAR) and estimate the total medical expenditure of the Korean National Health Insurance (KNHI) due to smoking.
Methods: We used data from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study of 1,178,138 Koreans aged 30 to 95. These data were available from 1992 to 2003 and covered a long-term follow-up period among the Korean population.

Bee venom (BV), well known as a traditional Oriental medicine, has been shown to exhibit anti-arthritic and anti-carcinogenic effects. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of BV have not been elucidated in microglia. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of BV and its major component, melittin (MEL), on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV2 microglia.

Beta-sitosterol (SITO) is a potential candidate for cancer chemotherapy, however, little is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms in cancer cells. We herein identified how SITO induces anti-proliferation and cell death in MCA-102 fibrosarcoma cells. SITO exposure induced-apoptosis and the cell death resulted from a significant loss of the Bcl-2 and the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family (XIAP, cIAP-1 and cIAP-2), and increased Bax with an alteration of p53 and p21.

While vitellogenesis in male fish is commonly used as a biomarker of xenoestrogen exposure, very little is known about the impacts associated with this unusual protein synthesis in feral populations. To this end, a recent study showed elevated circulating vitellogenin (VTG) levels in male Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) collected from the Aja but not Tengan Rivers in Okinawa, Japan. Here we investigated whether this unusual protein synthesis in male fish from the Aja River affect transcript abundance of estrogen (ER), androgen (AR) and glucocorticoid (GR) receptors in the liver, brain and testis.

The antioxidant properties of rhapontigenin and rhaponticin isolated from Rheum undulatum were investigated. Rhapontigenin was found to scavenge intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The radical scavenging effect of rhapontigenin was more effective than rhaponticin.

Background And Purpose: The advances in the diagnosis and treatment of acute stroke increase the importance of providing these patients with timely medical attention. This study was designed to assess time delays in neurological evaluation and neuroimaging and to determine whether they are important obstacles to performing thrombolytic therapy.
Methods: Data were obtained between May 2004 and September 2006 from 195 consecutive patients who were admitted to Cheju National University Hospital for acute ischemic stroke within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms.
