The complex architecture of the papillary muscles (PMs) of the ventricles plays a crucial role in cardiac function and pathology. This comparative study aimed to examine the differences in PMs morphology between the right and left ventricles, focusing on their number, location, and shape. A total of 38 grossly normal hearts from donated bodies were dissected, and the number, location, and shape of PMs in both ventricles were observed.

Department of Ophthalmology, Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Medical Center, Little Rock, Arkansas; Department of Ophthalmology, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. Electronic address:

We investigated the relationship between self-reported history of visual impairment in youth and the development of dementia in later life using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) household survey, which included the Eight-item Informant Interview to Differentiate Aging and Dementia (AD-8) screen. Adults with a reported history of childhood visual impairment were found to have significantly higher odds of positive dementia screening. After adjusting for confounders, we found a twofold increase in those reporting early visual impairment compared with those who did not report early visual impairment.

Free non-vascularised fibular grafts are an autologous grafting option that requires a simple technique and minimal expertise to replicate. However, due to limited intrinsic biological activity, they are less preferred than their vascularised counterparts for reconstructing large bone defects. We present a case of a female child in her middle childhood with limb length discrepancy due to extensive femoral diaphyseal bone loss following successful treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the femur.

Activation of α2B/2C adrenergic receptor ameliorates ocular surface inflammation through enhancing regulatory T cell function.

Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 02114, USA. Electronic address:

There is an unmet need for effectively treating dry eye disease (DED), a T cell-mediated chronic, inflammatory ocular surface disorder. Given the potential of nonneuronal adrenergic system in modulating T cell response, we herein investigated the therapeutic efficacy and the underlying mechanisms of a specific alpha 2 adrenergic receptor agonist (AGN-762, selective for α2B/2C receptor subtypes) in a mouse model of DED. Experimental DED was treated with the AGN-762 by oral gavage, either at disease induction or after disease establishment, and showed sustained amelioration, along with reduced expression of DED-pathogenic cytokines in ocular surface tissues, decreased corneal MHC-IICD11b cells and lymphoid Th17 cells, and higher function of regulatory T cells (Treg).

A Photochemical Strategy towards Michael Addition Reactions of Cyclopropenes.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

November 2024

Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Jammu, Jagti, NH-44, Nagrota Bypass, Jammu J&K, 181221, India.

The development of Michael addition reactions to conjugated cyclopropenes is a challenge in organic synthesis due to the fleeting and reactive nature of such strained Michael acceptor systems. Herein, the development of a photochemical approach towards such conjugated cyclopropenes is reported that serves as a strategic entry point to densely functionalized cyclopropanes in a diastereoselective fashion. The process involves the light-mediated generation of transient cyclopropenyl α,β-unsaturated esters from vinyl diazo esters, followed by an organic base catalyzed nucleophilic addition of N-heterocycles to directly access β-N-heterocyclic cyclopropanoic esters.

Unlabelled: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) stands as a prominent vector-borne zoonotic pathogen, displaying neurotropism and eliciting Parkinson's disease (PD)-like symptoms among most symptomatic survivors. A characteristic feature of PD is the aggregation of mutated α-synuclein (α-syn) that damages the dopaminergic neurons. Considering this link between JEV-induced PD-like symptoms and α-syn pathogenesis, we explored the role of α-syn in JEV infectivity in neuronal cells.

  • - The study focuses on improving the extraction of surgical data from electronic health records (EHRs) using a new Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm that integrates a Large Language Model (LLM), specifically GPT4-Turbo, to automate the process.
  • - The algorithm operates in two stages: first, a rule-based NLP framework identifies and classifies relevant text segments, which are then verified by the LLM for accuracy on surgical details like type of surgery and complications.
  • - Results showed that the NLP+LLM approach significantly improved accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional manual methods, indicating its potential for broader use in healthcare settings.

Studies provide notable evidence that oxidative stress (OS) mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) disturb reproductive health. We have shown in our previous publication that exposure of Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), induces OS mediated ROS generation which inhibits steroid synthesis. In the present study, we demonstrated the ameliorative/protective effects of one of the steroidal saponins, i.

A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→K^{±}γ, and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ is performed using up to 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products.
