Objectives: The worldwide increasing prevalence of obesity is considered as a major health problem. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) controls adipocyte differentiation and regulates a number of genes associated with energy homeostasis. In this study, we investigated the association of PPAR-γ gene Pro12Ala (rs1801282) and C1431T (rs3856806) polymorphisms with morbid obesity and related phenotypes, in north Indian population.

Article Synopsis
  • The rupture of the sinus of Valsalva is a rare but serious issue that can occur due to infective endocarditis.
  • Three-dimensional echocardiography is more effective than two-dimensional echocardiography for accurately identifying the rupture's location and characteristics in patients.
  • In this case, 3D echocardiography successfully revealed the rupture in the right ventricle, leading to effective treatment with a transcatheter closure device.

Introduction: Circulating lipopolysaccharides released from bacteria may activate both neutrophils and monocytes. The activated neutrophils release myeloperoxidase (MPO), a specific enzyme with strong oxidative activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate MPO enzyme activity in plasma of critically ill patients and to check the hypothesis that these concentrations in plasma would be higher in sepsis and systemic inflammatory conditions, as neutrophils release their contents before proliferating in response to stress.

A polymorphism in the promoter region of uncoupling protein 2 gene -866 G/A has been associated with its expression levels, the risk of obesity, and metabolic abnormalities. We aimed to investigate the associations of uncoupling protein (UCP)2 gene variants with obesity and related traits. A total of 440 subjects, 200 obese, and 240 non-obese individuals were included in this case-control study.
