Background And Purpose: Due to potential health-related consequences of osteoporosis (OP), health care providers who do not order imaging, such as physical therapists, should be aware of OP screening tools that identify individuals who need medical and rehabilitation care. However, current knowledge and guidance on screening tools is limited. Therefore, we explored OP screening tools that are appropriate and feasible for physical therapy practice, and evaluated tools' effectiveness by examining their clinimetric properties.

Evolutionary biology has long striven to understand why some lineages diversify exceptionally while others do not. Most studies have focused on how extrinsic factors can promote differences in diversification dynamics, but a clade's intrinsic modularity and integration can also catalyze or restrict its evolution. Here, we integrate geometric morphometrics, phylogenetic comparative methods and visualizations of covariance to infer the presence of distinct modules in the body plan of Characiformes, an ecomorphologically diverse fish radiation.

The longitudinal arch of the human foot is viewed as a pivotal adaptation for bipedal walking and running. Fossil footprints from Laetoli, Tanzania, and Ileret, Kenya, are believed to provide direct evidence of longitudinally arched feet in hominins from the Pliocene and Pleistocene, respectively. We studied the dynamics of track formation using biplanar X-ray, three-dimensional animation and discrete element particle simulation.

In this practice note, we document the progression of the Community Vaccine Collaborative (CVC), on which we first published in 2021. The CVC convened to address deep COVID-19-related disparities affecting the Black, Latine, immigrant/refugee, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, (questioning), intersex, asexual, and (agender; LGBTQIA+) communities. The COVID-19 pandemic is rooted in centuries of oppression and marginalization leading to inequities and required dedicated focus to support marginalized communities in times of crisis.

Holins are bacteriophage-encoded transmembrane proteins that function to control the timing of bacterial lysis event, assist with the destabilization of the membrane proton motive force and in some models, generate large "pores" in the cell membrane to allow the exit of the phage-encoded endolysin so they can access the peptidoglycan components of the cell wall. The lysis mechanism has been rigorously evaluated through biochemical and genetic studies in very few phages, and the results indicate that phages utilize endolysins, holins and accessory proteins to the outer membrane to achieve cell lysis through several distinct operational models. This observation suggests the possibility that phages may evolve novel variations of how the lysis proteins functionally interact in an effort to improve fitness or evade host defenses.

Research has demonstrated that older adults with multiple chronic diseases (CD) are particularly vulnerable to depression. Meeting current recommendations for physical activity (PA) may help ameliorate the impact of depression on this population. Nonetheless, the impact of frequency versus duration of PA on depression in older adults remains to be explored.

Early-life adversity (ELA) can induce persistent neurological changes and increase the risk for developing affective or substance use disorders. Disruptions to the reward circuitry of the brain and pathways serving motivation and emotion have been implicated in the link between ELA and altered adult behavior. The molecular mechanisms that mediate the long-term effects of ELA, however, are not fully understood.

Background: Independent ambulation requires adaptability. Self-selected and maximum walking speeds are often both assessed to demonstrate the ability to adapt speed to different tasks and environments. However, purposefully walking at a slow speed (slowWS) could also be an appropriate adaptation in certain situations but has rarely been investigated.

It is a steep challenge to fully implement the wide range of evidence that supports rehabilitation interventions for the prevention of chronic disease. Proactive physical activity (PA) promotion can lead to increased PA levels to improve and maintain physical function. Higher levels of PA throughout the lifespan lead to better overall population health, wellness, aging, disease prevention, and chronic condition management.

The electronic state chromatography (ESC) effect allows the differentiation of ions in their ground and metastable states by their gaseous mobilities in the limit of low electrostatic fields. It is investigated here by means of accurate transport calculations with ab initio ion-atom potentials for the Cr, Co, and Ni cations in He buffer gas near room temperature. The values for the open-shell ions in degenerate states are shown to be well approximated by using the single isotropic interaction potential.

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically disrupted food and educational systems, laying bare institutional inadequacies and structural inequalities. While there has been ample discussion on impacts to the food system and higher education institutions separately, there has been little written through the perspective of people who navigate both. Farmers, researchers, graduate students, chefs, and many stakeholders contribute to community engaged scholarship (CES) in food systems, facing novel obstacles and opportunities with the spread of the pandemic.

Objective: Human gene expression studies typically rely on peripheral blood samples as a cellular source, however there are numerous situations in which venipuncture is contraindicated. To this end, an oral rinse-based method for collecting salivary neutrophils as a cellular source for gene expression analyses was previously developed and shown in a pilot study with five male participants to yield mRNA expression results comparable to those obtained from peripheral blood samples. The objective of the current study was to characterize the generalizability of the oral rinse-based method by analyzing unpublished RNA quality data obtained through a parent study that collected salivary neutrophil samples using the method from a larger sample size and including both men and women.
