Hypothesis: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has become an increasingly popular treatment option for proximal humerus fractures in the elderly. There is however contradictory evidence on the impact of timing of RSA on patient outcomes. It remains unclear if poor results after initial nonsurgical or surgical management can be improved with delayed RSA.

The A to F of functional status in the acute setting: A scoping review.

Functional status (FSt) describes the phenomenon of prolonged non-epileptic attacks that may be misidentified as Status Epilepticus (SE). The early differentiation between epileptic and functional status is crucial in order to avoid unnecessarily invasive and costly medical escalation in the latter group, including the hazards of overmedication, intubation and intensive care admission. Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease.

Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals).

Expanding capacity in mental health research in intellectual disabilities.

Although the research base on mental health in intellectual disabilities is advancing, there are long-standing barriers that hinder successful completion of funded studies. A variety of stakeholders hold the key to mitigating the challenges and arriving at sustainable solutions that involve researchers, experts by experience, clinicians and many others in the research pathway. Lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic can also contribute to improvements in the conduct of research in the medium to long term.

This study aims to assess acceptability of patients and clinicians towards teleconsultation in oral and maxillofacial surgery compared with an expected face-to-face assessment. 340 telephone clinic patient episodes were surveyed over the initial 7-week period of pandemic-related service restriction.

The authors have independently reviewed articles from 1977 onwards, primarily focusing on the etiopathology, symptoms, differentiation between similar psychiatric conditions, immunological reactions, alterations in the nervous system and gut microbiota, genetics, and the available treatment for PANDAS. Recent research indicates that PANDAS patients show noticeable alterations within the structures of the central nervous system, including caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, and striatum, as well as bilateral and lentiform nuclei.

Energy drinks are nonalcoholic beverages that are widely consumed in the general population, and worldwide usage is increasing. The main stimulant component of energy drinks is typically caffeine. Few case reports exist that link energy drink consumption to psychosis, and similarly few reports exist that associate energy drink consumption with acute renal failure.

Postoperative critical care and high-acuity care provision in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Background: Decisions to admit high-risk postoperative patients to critical care may be affected by resource availability. We aimed to quantify adult ICU/high-dependency unit (ICU/HDU) capacity in hospitals from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand (NZ), and to identify and describe additional 'high-acuity' beds capable of managing high-risk patients outside the ICU/HDU environment.

Improved mental health among LABILE study participants: A qualitative exploration.

Results of the LABILE trial showed no difference between people with BPD who were prescribed lamotrigine and those on placebo. However, most study participants experienced sustained improvement in their mental health during the trial. We conducted a thematic analysis of qualitative data from interviews with 47 LABILE study participants to identify factors that may have contributed to this improvement.
