Heterotrophic bacteria are commonly found in water samples. While these Heterotrophic Bacterial/Plate Counts (HPC) do not necessarily indicate a health hazard, high counts provide a good indication of the efficiency of water disinfection and integrity of distribution systems. The aim of this study was to compare the PetrifimTM AC method to the pour plate technique for the testing of HPC in water samples.

Candidiasis caused by multidrug-resistant species continues to be difficult to eradicate. The use of live probiotic bacteria has gained a lot of interest in the treatment of candidiasis; however, whole-cell probiotic use can often be associated with a high risk of sepsis. Strategies manipulating cell-free methods using probiotic strains could lead to the development of novel antifungal solutions.

Despite the rise of new Candida species, Candida albicans tops the list with high morbidity and mortality rates. To tackle this problem there is a need to explore new antifungals that could replace or augment the current treatment options. We previously reported that tosylation of eugenol on hydroxyl group resulted in molecules with enhanced antifungal potency.
