Background: Parkinson's disease (PD), even though generally perceived as a dominantly motor disorder, is associated with a wide range of non-motor symptoms, including mixed anxiety-depressive disorder (MADD).
Objectives: The aim of the presented study was to determine whether deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) brings the functional characteristics of non-motor networks closer to the condition detected in healthy population and whether pre-DBS presence of MADD in PD patients was associated with different reaction to this therapeutic modality.
Methods: Resting-state fMRI signature elicited by STN DBS activation and deactivation in 81 PD patients was compared against healthy controls, with the focus on measures of efficiency of information processing and localised subnetwork differences.

Introduction: Pathological destruction of the axis vertebra leads to a highly unstable condition in an upper cervical spine. As surgical resection and anatomical reconstruction of the second cervical vertebrae represents a life threatening procedure, less radical approaches are preferred and only few cases of C2 prosthesis are described in literature.
Case Description: The focus of this case report is a 21-year-old man with a pathological fracture of C2 managed primarily surgically with the C1-C3 dorsal fusion.

Objectives: Although cardiogenic shock requiring extracorporeal life support after cardiac surgery is associated with high mortality, the impact of sex on outcomes of postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support remains unclear with conflicting results in the literature. We compare patient characteristics, in-hospital outcomes, and overall survival between females and males requiring postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support.
Methods: This retrospective, multicenter (34 centers), observational study included adults requiring postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support between 2000 and 2020.

The delineation of protein-lipid interfaces is essential for understanding the mechanisms of various membrane-associated processes crucial to plant development and growth, including signalling, trafficking, and membrane transport. Due to their highly dynamic nature, the precise characterization of lipid-protein interactions by experimental techniques is challenging. Molecular dynamics simulations provide a powerful computational alternative with a spatial-temporal resolution allowing the atomistic-level description.

It is so far unclear how the COVID-19 winter waves started and what should be done to prevent possible future waves. In this study, we deciphered the dynamic course of a winter wave in 2021 in Saxony, a state in Eastern Germany neighbouring the Czech Republic and Poland. The study was carried out through the integration of multiple virus genomic epidemiology approaches to track transmission chains, identify emerging variants and investigate dynamic changes in transmission clusters.

A series of quinolino-fused 7-deazapurine (pyrimido[5',4':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-]quinoline) ribonucleosides were designed and synthesized. The synthesis of the key 11-chloro-pyrimido[5',4':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-]quinoline was based on the Negishi cross-coupling of iodoquinoline with zincated 4,6-dichloropyrimidine followed by azidation and thermal or photochemical cyclization. Vorbrüggen glycosylation of the tetracyclic heterocycle followed by cross-coupling or substitution reactions at position 11 gave the desired set of final nucleosides that showed moderate to weak cytostatic activity and fluorescent properties.

Antibiotic resistance (ATBR) is increasing every year as the overuse of antibiotics (ATBs) and the lack of newly emerging antimicrobial agents lead to an efficient pathogen escape from ATBs action. This trend is alarming and the World Health Organization warned in 2021 that ATBR could become the leading cause of death worldwide by 2050. The development of novel ATBs is not fast enough considering the situation, and alternative strategies are therefore urgently required.

Background: Atherosclerosis is a major cause of ischemic stroke, and early detection of advanced atherosclerosis in the carotid artery is important for reducing morbidity and mortality. What is even more important is not only detection of atherosclerosis but early determination whether the patients are at high risk of an event with adverse effects as the size of the plaque does not necessarily reflect its potential to trigger such events.
Aim: We studied whether plasma lipidomics profile can be used as a diagnostic tool for stratification of stable or unstable plaques without the need of removing the carotid plaque.

Fluorination of carbohydrate ligands of lectins is a useful approach to examine their binding profile, improve their metabolic stability and lipophilicity, and convert them into F NMR-active probes. However, monofluorination of monovalent carbohydrate ligands often leads to a decreased or completely lost affinity. By chemical glycosylation, we synthesized the full series of methyl β-glycosides of N,N'-diacetylchitobiose (GlcNAcβ(1-4)GlcNAcβ1-OMe) and LacdiNAc (GalNAcβ(1-4)GlcNAcβ1-OMe) systematically monofluorinated at all hydroxyl positions.

The phenomenon of post-activation performance enhancement plays an unidentified role in movement eccentric speed and individual muscle group responses. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the loaded front squat (FSq) speed of the eccentric phase would influence the post-activation performance enhancement effect and whether the FSq would elicit similar performance enhancement of knee flexion, knee extension, hip flexion, and hip extension muscles. Twenty resistance-trained handball players performed the FSq under maximum eccentric-concentric speed and 2-s eccentric speed (only the eccentric phase performed), while pre- and post-front squat countermovement jump, knee, and hip isokinetic flexion/extension performance were tested.
