Article Synopsis
  • The purpose of the study was to compare the safety and effectiveness of a fixed-dose combination of netarsudil and latanoprost (NET/LAT) with bimatoprost and timolol (BIM/TIM) in treating open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
  • Conducted as a six-month randomized study, participants over 18 years with uncontrolled intraocular pressure were assigned to either NET/LAT or BIM/TIM, with efficacy and safety monitored over the period.
  • Results showed that NET/LAT was non-inferior to BIM/TIM, maintaining a similar intraocular pressure at various time points, with both treatments demonstrating comparable safety profiles.

Impaired intestinal permeability in patients with multiple sclerosis.

August 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, Second Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and University Hospital Motol in Prague, Czech Republic.

Background: A number of recent studies have shown that the intestinal microbiome, part of the brain-gut axis, is implicated in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis. An essential part of this axis, is the intestinal barrier and gastrointestinal disorders with intestinal barrier dysregulation appear to be linked to CNS demyelination, and hence involved in the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the integrity of the intestinal barrier in patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis (CDMS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) using two serum biomarkers, claudin-3 (CLDN3), a component of tight epithelial junctions, and intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP), a cytosolic protein in enterocytes.

Of the urine donors, 15 were healthy volunteers, 5 were patients with non-cancer diseases, 50 were patients with different stages of bladder cancer.

Objective: A role of autoreactive T cells for type 1 diabetes pathogenesis is considered crucial. In our pilot study we addressed if autoreactive mononuclear cells are present also in peripheral blood of patients with other specific forms of diabetes as cystic fibrosis related diabetes (CFRD).

Methods: Cellular immune responses to a known beta-cell autoantigen (GAD65 and GAD65 derived peptides) were analysed by ELISPOT (IFN-gamma) and by protein microarray analysis in four patients suffering from CFRD, in four cystic fibrosis (CF) patients without diabetes, in eight type 1 diabetes patients (without CF) and in four healthy controls.
