Wilson disease (WD) primarily presents with hepatic and neurological symptoms. While hepatic symptoms typically precede the neurological manifestations, copper accumulates in the brain already in this patient group and leads to subclinical brain MRI abnormalities including T2 hyperintensities and atrophy. This study aimed to assess brain morphological changes in mild hepatic WD.

Although the overall survival prognosis of patients in advanced stages of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is poor, typically ranging from days to months from diagnosis, there are rare cases of patients remaining in therapy for longer periods of time. Early estimations of survival prognosis would allow rational decisions on complex therapy interventions, including radical surgery and robust systemic therapy regimens. Understandably, there is great interest in finding prognostic markers that can be used for patient stratification.

Objectives: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common symptom associated with Covid-19. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the importance of psychophysical olfactory tests and electrophysiological olfactory assessment increased. The purpose of the study was to analyze the psychophysical olfactory tests and the post-covid curves of olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) and trigeminal event-related potentials (TERPs).

Background: Pancreaticoduodenectomy is associated with an incidence of postoperative complications of approximately 41%. One of the most severe complications is a postoperative pancreatic fistula. The exact cause of postoperative fistula development is still unknown, but it appears to be multifactorial.

Objective: Chronic low back pain, affecting up to 58% of the population, often stems from intervertebral disc degeneration. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used for diagnostics, challenges arise in pinpointing pain sources due to frequent asymptomatic findings. Single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) integrated with computed tomography (CT) offers a promising approach, enhancing sensitivity and specificity.

Pulmonary hypertension is a group of diseases characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance with significant morbidity and mortality. The most prevalent type is pulmonary hypertension secondary to left heart disease (PH-LHD). The available experimental models of PH-LHD use partial pulmonary clamping by technically nontrivial open-chest surgery with lengthy recovery.

The increasing occurrence of multiple primary cancers (MPC) is a long-term trend, but the prevalence of MPC in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its impact on overall survival (OS) remains unknown. We retrospectively analyzed 497 patients with HCC treated at two tertiary centers. The cohort was divided into two subgroups - liver transplant (LT, 324 patients) and non-liver transplant (non-LT, 173 patients).

Introduction And Objectives: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents one of the most common cancers worldwide. A considerable proportion of HCC is caused by cirrhosis related to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Due to the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome, it is estimated that MASH-related HCC will become the most prevalent etiology of HCC.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the world. HCC is often diagnosed late because patients with early-stage cancer have no apparent symptoms. Therefore, it is desirable to find a reliable method for an early diagnosis based on the detection of metabolites - biomarkers, that can be detected in the early stages of the disease.

Bosworth fracture (BF) is a special type of locked ankle fracture-dislocation, characterized by displacement of a fragment of the fractured fibula from the fibular notch behind the posterior surface of the distal tibia. BF is a complex injury affecting multiple structures of the ankle joint, which is still frequently misjudged even today, potentially leading to severe complications. CT examination, including 3D reconstructions, should be the diagnostic standard in BF, as it provides a complete picture of the fracture pathoanatomy, most prominently the morphology of the frequently associated posterior malleolar fracture.

The main aim of our study was to investigate the specific contribution of a 9-valent human papillomavirus vaccine (9vHPV) to the recurrence risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+) in women vaccinated post-excision. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective monocentric cohort study in women aged 22-49 years undergoing conization between 2014 and 2023. The 9vHPV-vaccinated women were matched to unvaccinated women for age and follow-up duration in a 1:2 ratio to eliminate allocation bias.

Gliomagenesis induces profound changes in the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the brain. In this study, we identified a cellular population responsible for the increased deposition of collagen I and fibronectin in glioblastoma. Elevated levels of the fibrillar proteins collagen I and fibronectin were associated with the expression of fibroblast activation protein (FAP), which is predominantly found in pericyte-like cells in glioblastoma.

Inflammatory bowel disease, encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a persistent immune-mediated inflammatory gastrointestinal disease. This study investigates the role of growth differentiation factor 15 in severe IBD cases, aiming to identify a reliable parameter to assess disease severity and monitor activity. We analyzed plasma samples from 100 patients undergoing biologic therapy for severe IBD and 50 control subjects.

The role of 16S rRNA has been and largely remains crucial for the identification of microbial organisms. Although 16S rRNA could certainly be described as one of the most studied sequences ever, the current view of it remains somewhat ambiguous. While some consider 16S rRNA to be a variable marker with resolution power down to the strain level, others consider them to be living fossils that carry information about the origin of domains of cellular life.

We sought to describe the cognitive profile of patients with Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (iNPH) using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Based on age and education correlated norms, we aimed to compare performance in each measured cognitive domain: executive functions (EFs), verbal memory (VM), non-verbal memory (nVM), visuoconstructional abilities (VA) and attention/psychomotor speed (A/PS). Patients diagnosed with iNPH underwent comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation before shunting.

Hand2 is a core transcription factor responsible for chromaffin cell differentiation. However, its potential utility in surgical pathology has not been studied. Thus, we aimed to investigate its expression in paragangliomas, other neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), and additional non-neuroendocrine tumors.
