A double primary colorectal cancer (CRC) in a familial setting signals a high risk of CRC. In order to identify novel CRC susceptibility genes, we whole-exome sequenced germline DNA from nine persons with a double primary CRC and a family history of CRC. The detected variants were processed by bioinformatics filtering and prioritization, including STRING protein-protein interaction and pathway analysis.

Backround: We wanted to characterize conditional survival in prostate cancer (PC) in Sweden around and after 2005 when the vast increase in incidence due to the opportunistic testing for prostate specific antigen (PSA) culminated. We hypothesize that analyzing survival data during that time period may help interpret survival trends. We focus on stage-specific analysis using conditional survival in order to define the periods when deaths most commonly occurred.

Objectives: We describe age-specific survival in thyroid cancer (TC) from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden over a 50-year period.
Design: Population-based survival study.
Methods: Relative 5-year survival data were obtained from the NORDCAN database for the years 1972-2021.

Purpose: Sarcomas are rare cancers with many subtypes in soft tissues, bone and cartilage. International survival trends in these cancers are not well known. We present 50-year survival trends for soft tissue sarcoma (STS) and bone sarcoma (BS) in Denmark (DK), Finland (FI), Norway (NO) and Sweden (SE).

Background: The incidence of prostate cancer (PC) increased vastly as a result of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing. Survival in PC improved in the PSA-testing era, but changes in clinical presentation have hampered the interpretation of the underlying causes.
Design: We analyzed survival trends in PC using data from the NORDCAN database for Denmark (DK), Finland (FI), Norway (NO) and Sweden (SE) by analyzing 1-, 5- and 10-year relative survival and conditional relative survival over the course of 50 years (1971-2020).

Background: Survival in breast cancer (BC) has developed favorably but late recurrences are still a problem.
Methods: We model survival data from the NORDCAN database and analyze 1-, 5-, and 10-year relative survival and 5/1- and 10/5-year conditional survival in BC from Denmark (DK), Finland (FI), Norway (NO), and Sweden (SE) between 1971 and 2020. Conditional survival measures survival in those who had survived year 1 to reach year 5 (5/1), or in those who had survived year 5 to reach year 10 (10/5).

Background: Female cancers cover common breast cancers, relatively common endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancers and rare vulvar cancer. Survival in these cancers is known to be relatively good compared to all cancers but long-term studies for these cancers are rare, and to fill the gap, here, we generate survival data through 50 years.
Materials And Methods: We applied generalized additive models to data from the NORDCAN database and analyzed 1- and 5-year relative survival for these cancers in Denmark (DK), Finland (FI), Norway (NO), and Sweden (SE) over half a century (1971-2020).

Objective: Lung cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and survival has been poor, although long-term studies have been rare. We analyzed data on survival in lung cancer from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden over a 50-year period (1971-2020).
Methods: Relative 1- and 5-year survival data were obtained from the NORDCAN database for 1971-2020.

Objectives: Survival in melanoma has been increasing and the most recent interest is to observe the population-level impact of novel targeted therapies and immunotherapy. We analysed survival in melanoma from Denmark (DK), Finland (FI), Norway (NO) and Sweden (SE) over a 50-years period (1971-2020).
Methods: Relative 1-5/1- and 5-year survival data were obtained from the NORDCAN database for the years 1971-2020.

Survival studies in intestinal cancers have generally shown favorable development, but few studies have been able to pinpoint the timing of the changes in survival over an extended period. Here, we compared the relative survival rates for colon, rectal and small intestinal cancers from Denmark (DK), Finland (FI), Norway (NO) and Sweden (SE). Relative 1-, 5- and 5/1-year conditional survival data were obtained from the NORDCAN database for the years 1971-2020.

It remains unclear, however, whether dramatic shortening of door-to-needle time (DNT) among different types of hospitals nationwide does not compromise safety and still improves outcome. Methods and Results Multifaceted intervention to shorten DNT was introduced at a national level, and prospectively collected data from a registry between 2004 and 2019 were analyzed.

Background: There are currently insufficient data on the population of endometrial epithelial stem/progenitor cells in farm animals.
Objectives: With the aim of identifying a potential population of epithelial stem/progenitor cells in the porcine and bovine endometrium, this study immunohistochemically examined the expression patterns of the oestrogen and progesterone receptors, as well as that of the embryonal stem cell marker SOX2.
Methods: A total of 24 endometrial tissue samples obtained from cycling pigs (n = 12) and cows (n = 12) were included in our study.

Aims: We analyzed the mortality risk and its predictors in patients hospitalized for heart failure (HF).
Methods: Patients discharged from hospitalization for acute decompensation of HF in 2010-2020 and younger than 86 years were followed (n=4097). We assessed the incidence and trends of all-cause death, its main predictors, and the pharmacotherapy recommended at discharge from the hospital.

A convenient geometrical description of the microvascular network is necessary for computationally efficient mathematical modelling of liver perfusion, metabolic and other physiological processes. The tissue models currently used are based on the generally accepted schematic structure of the parenchyma at the lobular level, assuming its perfect regular structure and geometrical symmetries. Hepatic lobule, portal lobule, or liver acinus are considered usually as autonomous functional units on which particular physiological problems are studied.

Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPls) are generally characterized as heterogeneous and non-specific autoantibodies directed against various phospholipids such as cardiolipin, ph-serine, ph-inositol, ph-acid, ph-glycerol, ph-sphyngomyelin, ph-choline, annexins, and co-factor β2-glycoprotein I. aPls occur not only during autoimmune diseases but also during infectious diseases, essential hypertension, neurological complication, metabolic diseases, some drug abuse, and transplant loss. aPls are very often found in connection with reproductive failure such as repeated pregnancy loss and/or missed abortion, intrauterine fetal death, in preeclampsia, and repeated delivery of hypothrophic fetus.

We present 4 cases of uterine mesenchymal tumors that were located mostly in the myometrium in middle-aged women. Grossly the tumors vaguely resembled conventional leiomyomas. All tumors were extremely hyalinized.

We describe a unique benign mesenchymal tumor in paraspinal location in a 13-year-old patient with Gardner's syndrome. The Gardner's syndrome in this patient consisted of multiple (more than 100) polyps throughout the entire colon with most in the cecum and rectum, three osteomas in the frontal area of the skull and one in the third right rib, and multiple superficial skin tumors. One of these cutaneous tumors was excised and histologically diagnosed as an epidermal cyst.

The relationship between the plasma magnesium (Mg) concentration and steady-state plasma insulin (SSPI) and glucose (SSPG) concentrations at the end of a 180-minute infusion of octreotide, insulin, and glucose was determined in 98 healthy nondiabetic subjects. For the purposes of data analysis, the population was divided into tertiles on the basis of the plasma Mg concentration: I, plasma Mg 0.83 mmol/L; II, plasma Mg 0.

We present five cases of a tumor which we named inflammatory myxoid tumor of the soft parts with bizarre giant cells and which is often misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm. The tumors were located in the soft tissues of the fingers and hand and were 1 to 2.5 cm in the largest diameter (median 2 cm).
