Life course epidemiological studies have documented the effects of family socioeconomic position (SEP) at birth on youth developmental processes and outcomes decades later. According to the minorities' diminished returns (MDR) theory, however, family SEP at birth generates smaller returns for Black compared to White families. Whether the Arg913Gln variation (rs11643718, G/A) of SLC12A3 contributes to diabetic nephropathy (DN) remains controversial. We undertook a case-control study to evaluate the association of the SLC12A3-Arg913Gln variation with the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Chinese type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients undergoing hemodialysis, and analyzed the genotype-phenotype interaction. Unrelated Chinese T2DM patients (n = 372) with diabetic retinopathy were classified into the non-DN (control) group (n = 151; duration of T2DM >15 years, no signs of renal involvement) and the DN-ESRD group (n = 221; ESRD due to T2DM, receiving hemodialysis).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of imipenem solution irrigation on post-operative surgical site infections (SSIs), hospital length of stay, and hospital costs. We hypothesized that there would be lower rate of SSIs, a shorter hospital stay, and lower hospital cost in patients with perforated appendicitis who received peritoneal cavity irrigation with imipenem solution in comparison to their counterparts who received irrigation with normal saline.

Effect of nicotine on body composition in mice.

Nicotine induces weight loss in both humans and rodents consuming a regular diet; however, the effect of nicotine on body weight and fat composition in rodents consuming a high-fat diet (HFD) has not been well studied. Thus, this study examined the effect of nicotine vs saline on body weight and fat composition in mice fed with either an HFD (62% of kcal from fat) or a standard normal chow diet (NCD) for 7 weeks. Nicotine dose dependently reduced body weight gain in mice that consumed both diets, but this effect was significantly greater in mice on the HFD.

Estrogen effects on neuronal morphology.

This review focuses on the effects of estrogen on neuronal morphology. Over the last decade neuroscientists have accumulated a wealth of information confirming the trophic effects of 17beta-estradiol on a variety of brain regions, including changes of hippocampal spine density and axonal outgrowth and retraction in hypothalamic nuclei, as well as other measures of structural reorganization that could underlie some of the cognitive benefits attributed to this hormone. Overall, results from a variety of investigators suggest that 17beta-estradiol is a potent structural signal that can drive developmental as well as adult plastic events in a variety of brain regions, not only those implicated in reproduction, but also in a diversity of functions.

In this study, we arbitrarily classified the morphological changes of sperm under hypo-osmotic condition and compared the results with four different sperm separation techniques. Excess tissue glucocorticoid action may contribute to the hyperglycemia and insulin resistance associated with type 2 diabetes, but the associated mechanisms are poorly understood. 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11beta-HSD1) converts inactive 11-dehydrocorticosterone into active corticosterone, thus amplifying glucocorticoid receptor-mediated tissue glucocorticoid action, particularly in the liver. The efficacy of telithromycin (HMR 3647), a new ketolide, in the treatment of experimental Bacteroides fragilis intraabdominal abscess in young and senescent mice was evaluated. Two different age groups of mice, young (2-3 months) and senescent (18-24 months) were used in this study. Most pro-neuropeptides are processed by the prohormone convertases, PC1 and PC2. We previously reported that changes in thyroid status altered anterior pituitary PC1 mRNA and this regulation was due to triiodothyronine (T(3))-dependent interaction of thyroid hormone receptor (TR) with negative thyroid hormone response elements (nTREs) contained in a large region of the human PC1 promoter. In this study, we demonstrated that hypothyroidism stimulated, while hyperthyroidism suppressed, PC1 mRNA levels in rat hypothalamus and cerebral cortex, but not in hippocampus.
