September 2021

Service Universitaire de Psychiatrie Adulte, Hôpital la Colombière, CHU Montpellier, Montpellier, France; Univ Paul Valéry Montpellier 3, Univ. Montpellier, EPSYLON EA, Montpellier, France.

The aim of our study was to compare the performance of three different instruments measuring clinical and cognitive dimensions of insight. Data on 182 outpatients with schizophrenia and one-year follow-up assessments was drawn from the FACE-SZ cohort. Awareness of clinical state (« clinical insight ») was measured using both a clinician-rated measure (the Scale to assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD)), and a self-report measure (the Birchwood Insight Scale (BIS).

The interest in social cognition in schizophrenia is justified by the relationship between deficits in these skills and negative functional outcomes. Although assessment batteries have already been described, there is no consensus about which measures are useful in predicting patient functioning or quality of life (QoL). We investigated a set of five measures of recognition of facial emotions, theory of mind (ToM), and empathy in a cohort of 143 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder at inclusion and, amongst whom 79 were reassessed 1 year later.

Background: Most people will partner at some point during their lives. Yet little is known about the association between childhood behavior and patterns of long-term romantic partnering in adulthood.

Methods: In this population-based cohort study, behavioral ratings were prospectively obtained from teachers when children (n = 2,960) were aged 10-12 years - for inattention, hyperactivity, aggression-opposition, anxiety, and prosociality - and linked to their tax return records from age 18 to 35 years (1998-2015).

The puzzle of quality of life in schizophrenia: putting the pieces together with the FACE-SZ cohort.

Psychol Med

June 2022

University Paris Saclay - UVSQ, Health Sciences department, EA 4047 HANDIReSP, Laboratory for clinical and public health research on psychological, cognitive and motor disability, Versailles, France.

Background: The determinants of quality of life (QoL) in schizophrenia are largely debated, mainly due to methodological discrepancies and divergence about the concepts concerned. As most studies have investigated bi- or tri-variate models, a multivariate model accounting for simultaneous potential mediations is necessary to have a comprehensive view of the determinants of QOL. We sought to estimate the associations between cognitive reserve, cognition, functioning, insight, depression, schizophrenic symptoms, and QoL in schizophrenia and their potential mediation relationships.

The role of prenatal social support in social inequalities with regard to maternal postpartum depression according to migrant status.

J Affect Disord

July 2020

Sorbonne Université, INSERM, Institut Pierre Louis d'Épidémiologie et de Santé Publique (IPLESP), Department of Social Epidemiology, F75012 Paris, France.

Background: An advantaged socioeconomic position (SEP) and satisfying social support during pregnancy (SSP) have been found to be protective factors of maternal postpartum depression (PDD). An advantaged SEP is also associated with satisfying SSP, making SSP a potential mediator of social inequalities in PPD. SEP, SSP and PPD are associated with migrant status.

The prevention of relapses and the treatment of depression during pregnancy are difficult challenges. The maintenance of antidepressants in pregnancy with its concomitant risks to mother and child needs to be weighed against those associated with not treating the disease. This study aimed at quantifying the impact of the occurrence of pregnancy on the course of antidepressant treatment among newly treated women (< 6 months).

Irritability and emotional lability have been shown to be severity and impairment factors in community and clinical sample studies and are frequent comorbid features of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, while irritability and emotional lability seem to be closely linked, the differential effect of these two features has received little attention. This study assessed the distinct associations of irritability and emotional lability on symptomatology in children with ADHD.

July 2020

Université Côte d'Azur, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Institut de Pharmacologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire, Valbonne, France. Electronic address:

Nearly 10% of 5-year-old children experience social, emotional or behavioral problems and are at increased risk of developing mental disorders later in life. While animal and human studies have demonstrated that cytokines can regulate brain functions, it is unclear whether individual cytokines are associated with specific behavioral dimensions in population-based pediatric samples. Here, we used data and biological samples from 786 mother-child pairs participating to the French national mother-child cohort EDEN.

The Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE) is a tool for self-assessing the cognitive and emotional components of empathy. A study showed that a two-factor model fits the data of patients with schizophrenia, whereas other reports on healthy subjects have suggested a five-factor decomposition. We aimed to replicate the model of et al.

Prenatal maternal depression is associated with developmental disorders in offspring. However, the specific effects of the intensity of prenatal depressive symptoms on infant behavior remain poorly explored. The aim of this work is to explore the links between early neonatal behavior and maternal prenatal depressive symptoms, independently from maternal pre- and postnatal anxiety and early postnatal maternal depressive symptoms.
