Article Synopsis
  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common hole in the heart that can cause serious problems, like strokes.
  • To fix a PFO safely, doctors need to understand the heart's structure and how blood flows between the chambers.
  • Special imaging tests, like transesophageal echocardiography, are important for checking the heart before any procedure to close the PFO.

Integrated Perspectives on Clinical Decision Support: A Comparative Analysis of Knowledge Management Approaches.

Stud Health Technol Inform

August 2024

Medical University of Vienna, Center for Medical Data Science, Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Spitalgasse 23, 1090 Vienna, Austria.

We analyze five approaches to knowledge management in clinical decision support (CDS) systems: pattern recognition based on annotated imaging data, mining of stored structured medical data, text mining of published texts, computable knowledge design, and general or specific text corpora for large language models. Each method's strengths and limitations in automating clinical knowledge management while striving for a zero-error policy are evaluated, offering insights into their roles in enhancing healthcare through intelligent decision support. The study aims to inform decisions in the development of effective, transparent CDS systems in clinical and patient care settings.

EMP2 Serves as a Functional Biomarker for Chemotherapy-Resistant Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Cancers (Basel)

April 2024

Department of Pathology Lab Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095, USA.

Breast cancer (BC) remains among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women worldwide. Triple-negative BC (TNBC) is a subset of BC characterized by aggressive behavior, a high risk of distant recurrence, and poor overall survival rates. Chemotherapy is the backbone for treatment in patients with TNBC, but outcomes remain poor compared to other BC subtypes, in part due to the lack of recognized functional targets.

Testicular dysfunction is a prevalent health problem frequently reported in individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM). Oxidative-inflammatory reactions, hormonal and spermatic abnormalities often accompany this illness. Herbal remedies "particularly wild plants" including chicory (Chicorium Intybus) and purslane (Portulaca Oleracea) are emerging as popular agents for people dealing with these issues due to their ability to act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation, and exhibit antidiabetic effects.

Unlabelled: The global impact of emerging viral infections emphasizes the urgent need for effective broad-spectrum antivirals. The cellular organelle, lipid droplet (LD), is utilized by many types of viruses for replication, but its reduction does not affect cell survival. Therefore, LD is a potential target for developing broad-spectrum antivirals.

A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in medical education requires addressing both explicit and implicit biases based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics and the intersectionality with other identities. Heterosexism and heteronormative attitudes contribute to health and healthcare disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning, intersex, asexual individuals. Student, trainee, and faculty competencies in medical education curricula regarding the care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning, intersex, asexual patients and those who are gender nonconforming or born with differences of sex development allow for better understanding and belonging within the clinical learning environment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning, intersex, asexual learners and educators.

Introduction: Endometrial cancer is the most commonly diagnosed female genital tract malignancy in the United States of America. Racial disparities surrounding this particular disease have been extensively investigated for over 26-years. We sought to determine if research in this area has led to any significant improvements in this disparity.

Introduction: The formative period of the specialty of gynecologic oncology was from 1968 to 1972 and became a board-certified specialty in 1973. During this formation there were no Black physicians participating in this process. We chronicle and document the incorporation of the first three board-certified Black physicians in the specialty of gynecologic oncology here for historical purposes.

Anti-radiation effect of MRN-100: a hydro-ferrate fluid, in vivo.

J Radiat Res

March 2024

Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Mansoura University, Mansoura 35516, Egypt.

Ionizing radiation (IR) severely harms many organs, especially the hematopoietic tissue, mandating the development of protective nutraceuticals. MRN-100, a hydro-ferrate fluid, has been shown to protect γ-radiated fish against hematopoietic tissue damage and lethality. The current study aimed to examine MRN-100's protective effect against irradiated mice and explore the mechanisms underlying its effect.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a significant gap in access and quality of surgical cancer care between wealthy and low-resource areas, affecting patient outcomes.
  • As cancer cases and deaths are expected to rise dramatically in the coming years, this issue of inequity in cancer surgery becomes increasingly urgent.
  • The text explores the reasons behind these disparities and suggests possible solutions to improve global access to effective cancer surgery.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a water-soluble molecule that emits fluorescence in the near-infrared light spectrum. Due to its fluorescence properties, safety profile, and cost-effectiveness, ICG is used in minimally invasive surgery, enabling real-time visualization of structures during the operation. Until recently, its use was mainly limited to robotic surgery, which required specific technological setups to visualize the fluorescence.

Regulome-wide association study identifies genetically driven accessible regions associated with pancreatic cancer risk.

Int J Cancer

February 2024

Cancer Epidemiology Division, Population Sciences in the Pacific Program, University of Hawaii Cancer Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified two dozen genetic variants that are associated with the risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), a deadly malignancy. However, a majority of these variants are located in noncoding regions of the genome, which limits the translation of GWAS findings into clinical applications. The regulome-wide association study (RWAS) is a recently developed method for identifying TF binding-induced accessibility regions for diseases.

Background: Tissue microarray (TMA) is a novel technique for studying different types of cancer tissues in one block. TMA is not yet established in Syria, so we aimed in this project to apply and set the most optimal conditions of TMA creation of breast cancer tissues at the Pathology Department of our institute.

Materials And Methods: Eighty-eight blocks of breast cancer tissues were selected, considering the inclusion criteria.

Background: Fragmented state laws have impacted cannabis uptake and perceptions in the USA. Little research has explored the attitudes, beliefs, and social network influences of young Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) who have experienced incarceration and use cannabis. While problematic cannabis use is not well defined and understudied, scholars have found that a person's social network can mediate problematic substance use and reduce recidivism rates by providing both tangible and emotional support.
