Background: Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) are rare forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of T-cell origin that occur mainly in the skin. The most common form is mycosis fungoides (MF), but Sézary syndrome (SS), a more aggressive form of CTCL, is another relevant subgroup. Due to the rare nature of the disease, population-based studies of the epidemiology and disease burden and insights into care delivery are limited.

Nomenclature of Genetic Movement Disorders: Recommendations of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Task Force - An Update.

Mov Disord

May 2022

The Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson's Disease and The Morton and Gloria Shulman Movement Disorder Clinic, Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

In 2016, the Movement Disorder Society Task Force for the Nomenclature of Genetic Movement Disorders presented a new system for naming genetically determined movement disorders and provided a criterion-based list of confirmed monogenic movement disorders. Since then, a substantial number of novel disease-causing genes have been described, which warrant classification using this system. In addition, with this update, we further refined the system and propose dissolving the imaging-based categories of Primary Familial Brain Calcification and Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation and reclassifying these genetic conditions according to their predominant phenotype.

Treated wastewater is a major pathway by which antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) enter aquatic ecosystems. However, knowledge gaps remain concerning the dissemination of specific ARG and their association with bacterial hosts. Here, we employed shotgun metagenomics to track ARG and taxonomic markers in river biofilms along a gradient of fecal pollution depicted by crAssphage signatures.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has matured into a standard treatment option for patients with severe symptomatic aortic valve stenosis (AS) across the whole spectrum of risk. The advances in the interventional treatment of AS raise the question of which patients with severe AS should be referred to surgery. The myriad of clinical permutations does not allow providing a single, uniform treatment strategy.

Background: People living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have suffered disproportionately in health outcomes and general well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is emerging evidence of increased psychological distress. Increased strain has also fallen on clinicians managing the psychological needs of people with IDD, in the context of learning new technologies, staff shortages, reduced services and paused training opportunities.

Aim: This study aimed to assess, for the first time, the dynamic morphometry of pelvic floor muscles (PFM) using three-dimensional transperineal ultrasound (3D-TPUS) and its progression at two-time points of gestation between women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and whether the PFM dysfunction is connected to GDM.

Methods: The study comprised 83 consecutive pregnant women with (n = 38) and without (n = 45) GDM screened at 24-30 and 38-40 weeks of gestation. 3D-TPUS and a mobility test were used to quantify PFM dynamic morphometry during maximum contraction and the Valsalva maneuver.

In the USA, family-based treatment (FBT) with inpatient medical stabilization as needed is the leading evidence-based treatment for youth with anorexia nervosa (AN). In continental Europe, typically inpatient multimodal treatment targeting weight recovery followed by outpatient care (IMT) is standard care, if prior outpatient treatment was not sufficient. Our aim was to compare weekly weight gain and hospital days over six months for adolescents receiving FBT (USA) versus IMT (Germany) using naturalistic treatment data.

Article Synopsis
  • This review focuses on treatment strategies and criteria for patients who have not responded to initial cisplatin-based chemotherapy for germ cell tumors, including both localized and metastatic cases.
  • A systematic literature search identified relevant studies from Jan 2010 to Feb 2021, with outcomes of interest related to survival rates, relapse rates, and safety across treatments.
  • The findings indicate that while standard cisplatin treatment remains the norm, high-dose chemotherapy and surgical options may improve survival in certain cases, and expert centers should manage those with more complicated cases.
