Objective: To analyze prevalences of allergic sensitization and atopic disease in relation to vaccination coverage.
Methods: A German atopy risk-enhanced birth cohort of 1314 neonates who were born in 1990 in 5 German cities was studied. A total of 943 children participated in the follow-up visit at 5 years of age.

Background: Multiple genetic studies have shown linkage of atopy-related phenotypes to chromosome 5q31. In this region several candidate genes for atopy are localized such as the Th2 cytokines IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13, but also CD14, a receptor for LPS. Recently, a functional CD14 promoter polymorphism was related to total and specific IgE responsiveness.

Background: Bronchial responsiveness (BR) to histamine or methacholin is a common finding in adult non-asthmatic patients with allergic rhinitis.
Objective: We tested whether BR is also present in children with a comparatively short history of allergic rhinitis in a paediatric cohort.
Methods: We performed pulmonary function tests and histamine challenges in a total of 654 children (age 7 years, participants of the German Multicenter Allergy Study) and compared PC20 FEV1 values in children with asthma, allergic rhinitis, asymptomatic allergic sensitization and non-atopic controls.

The Deleted in Malignant Brain Tumors 1 gene (DMBT1) has been proposed as a tumor suppressor gene candidate in human brain tumors, based on the observation of homozygous deletions affecting the DMBT1 region or part of the gene. In order to support this hypothesis, we performed a mutational analysis of the entire coding region of DMBT1, employing SSCP analysis and direct DNA sequencing in a series of 79 astrocytic gliomas. Five somatic mutations were detected.

The cytotoxic and photocytotoxic effects of two water-soluble fullerene derivatives, a dendritic C(60) mono-adduct and the malonic acid C(60) tris-adduct were tested on Jurkat cells. Cell growth and vitality were determined by a cell counting and staining technique. After 2 weeks cultivation in the presence of the fullerene derivatives, it was found that only the dendritic mono-adduct inhibits cell growth (within 2 weeks the cell number decreased to 19%), whereas the tris-malonic acid adduct has little effect.

Even nowadays, the essential problem of mechanical heart valve prostheses is the risk of thromboembolic events mainly caused by unnatural hemodynamics, e.g. just a few years ago the Medtronic Parallel (MP) showed unsatisfactory clinical results caused by thrombi.

To improve the durability of stentless valves without losing their excellent hemodynamic function, a new-generation auto-xenograft was developed and evaluated. A piece of vein was harvested from 3 juvenile sheep 6 weeks before implantation of the valve. Endothelial cells from the vein material were cultivated and used to reendothelialize a decellularized porcine pulmonary valve.

Hypoxia leads to a rapid increase in vesicular release of glutamate. In addition, hypoxic glutamate release might be caused by reversed operation of neuronal glutamate transporters. An increase in extracellular glutamate concentration might be an important factor in generating anoxic depolarizations (AD) and subsequent neuronal damage.

Background: Turkish children have been found to suffer less from atopic diseases than their German peers. The underlying causes are unknown.
Objective: To evaluate rates of sensitization and atopic disease among children in Germany with German or Turkish ethnicity and different degrees of cultural adaptation.

Chronic recurrent inflammation with joint effusion following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is common. We report an unusual case of a patient also suffering from undiagnosed Behçet's disease. The patient had chronic recurrent joint effusions of the knee 7 years after traumatic rupture of the ACL and autologous tendon reconstruction using a hamstring tendon autograft.

The optimal reconstruction protocol after total gastrectomy is still a matter of debate. Pouch reconstructions are developed to create a larger reservoir for food, to provide a barrier against intestinoesophageal reflux, and to lengthen the food transit time. Preservation of the duodenal passage should result in better physiologic regulation of the ingested food.

Concerns about allergic side-effects of vaccines and about a possible promotion of allergic diseases contribute to incomplete vaccination rates in childhood. This article reviews the current understanding of these issues. There is evidence that pertussis and diphtheria/tetanus antigens elicit immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody formation as part of the immune response.

Hyperforin, hypericin and pseudohypericin are the main ingredients of St. John's wort extract, which is available over the counter for treatment of mild to moderate depression. To facilitate clinical studies we developed two sensitive HPLC methods for determination of hypericin/pseudohypericin and hyperforin, respectively, in human plasma samples.

Objective: The primary goals in treating patients with diabetes are maintaining blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible and making a relatively normal quality of life achievable. Both of these goals are influenced by a multitude of somatic and psychological factors that should be seen as building a complex network. We examined whether a mathematical model can be construed that can depict the relative significance of each factor for achieving these treatment goals.

Laboratory studies in patients with autosomal-dominant hypertension and brachydactyly showed increased sensitivity to sympathetic stimuli and severe abnormalities in baroreflex buffering. To further elucidate the mechanisms by which impaired baroreflex sensitivity could influence blood pressure (BP), we conducted autonomic testing under field conditions. We studied 17 hypertensive affected (13 to 48 years, BMI 22.

In a prospective clinical investigation on neurochemical intensive care monitoring, the authors' aim was to elucidate the temporal profile of nitric oxide metabolite concentrations-that is, nitrite and nitrate (NO(x))--and compounds related to energy-metabolism in the cerebral interstitium of patients after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). During aneurysm surgery, microdialysis probes were implanted in cerebral white matter of the vascular territory most likely affected by vasospasm. Temporal profiles of NO(x) were analyzed in a subset of 10 patients (7 female, 3 male, mean age = 47 +/- 14 years).

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by bacteria in niches of the oral cavity play a major role in the etiology of bad breath, and can be easily detected by a portable sulfide monitor (Halimeter). To investigate the effect of an oral hygiene program on VSC levels, Halimeter readings were taken from 55 healthy dental students during a course in oral hygiene training, including instruction on brushing, flossing and professional tooth cleaning. Ten students who received no oral hygiene training served as a negative control.

Pertussis (P) toxin acts as adjuvant for IgE formation against simultaneously administered Ags in animal models. P vaccination may also have an adjuvant impact on IgE formation against coadministered diphtheria (D) and tetanus (T) Ags in humans. Sera of 103 D-T-P-immunized and 319 D-T-immunized children aged 2 years were analyzed for IgE, IgG4, and IgG to D and T (radioallergosorbent test), total IgE and IgE against common inhalant allergens (CAP radioallergosorbent test fluoroenzyme immunoassay).

The increasing prevalence of atopic diseases, particularly atopy-associated asthma, has become a major challenge for allergists and public health authorities in many countries. The understanding of the natural history of the atopic march, including the determinants that are modifiable and might become candidates for preventive intervention, is still very limited. Information provided by cross-sectional studies can only generate hypotheses, which need to be supported by prospective, longitudinal, cohort studies.
