Endoscopic resection techniques can successfully resect large lesions either in "en bloc" fashion or in "piece-meal" technique by using a submucosal injection solution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of a novel injectable, containing thermally sensitive co-polymer from ethylenoxide and propylenoxide (LiftUp) used as submucosal injection solution. We conducted an animal trial in the porcine model to evaluate the LiftUp gel in a preclinical setting and to study the effectiveness of mucosal lifting and the safety of the new injectable.

The aim of the present study was to identify and validate the biological significance of new genes/proteins involved in the development of allergic airway disease in a murine asthma model. Gene microarrays were used to identify genes with at least a two-fold increase in gene expression in lungs of two separate mouse strains with high and low allergic susceptibility. Validation of mRNA data was obtained by western blotting and immunohistochemistry, followed by functional analysis of one of the identified genes in mice with targeted disruption of specific gene expression.

Ximelagatran for treatment and prophylaxis of recurrent events in deep vein thrombosis.

Clin Appl Thromb Hemost

July 2007

Institute for Transfusion Medicine, Charité Humboldt University, Campus Charité Mitte, Berlin, Germany.

The treatment of acute venous thromboembolism and prophylaxis of recurrent events with heparin/low molecular weight heparin followed by vitamin K antagonists is limited by several factors. Oral direct thrombin inhibitors (ODTIs) showed a better pharmacological activity and might be an alternative in the treatment of venous thromboembolism. The Thrombin Inhibition in Venous Thromboembolism (THRIVE) program performed some studies developing the ODTI ximelagatran for this indication, and it is presented in the overview.

In addition to the ARF/p53 pathway, the DNA damage response (DDR) has been recognized as another oncogene-provoked anticancer barrier in early human tumorigenesis leading to apoptosis or cellular senescence. DDR mutations may promote tumor formation, but their impact on treatment outcome remains unclear. In this study, we generated ataxia telangiectasia mutated (Atm)-proficient and -deficient B-cell lymphomas in Emu-myc transgenic mice to examine the role of DDR defects in lymphomagenesis and treatment sensitivity.

The granulocyte nucleus and lamin B receptor: avoiding the ovoid.

Chromosoma

June 2007

Department of Medical Genetics, Charite Humboldt University, Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353 Berlin, Germany.

The major human blood granulocyte, the neutrophil, is an essential component of the innate immunity system, emigrating from blood vessels and migrating through tight tissue spaces to the site of bacterial or fungal infection where they kill and phagocytose invading microbes. Since the late nineteenth century, it has been recognized that the human neutrophil nucleus is distinctly not ovoid as in other cell types, but possesses a lobulated (segmented) shape. This deformable nucleus enhances rapid migration.

Fast ballistic flexion movements of the wrist are produced by a triphasic pattern of electromyographic (EMG) activity in flexor and extensor muscle. Whereas it is generally accepted that the primary motor cortex generates the first agonist burst (AG1), its contribution to the following antagonist burst (ANT) and second agonist burst (AG2) is unresolved. We applied single pulses of suprathreshold transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) at different times to the motor cortex ipsilateral to wrist flexion.
