Background: A labral injury contributes to glenohumeral instability. The Anterior Labral Circumferential Onlay Technique (ALCOT) reconstructs the labrum using the long head of the biceps tendon.
Hypothesis: The ALCOT would restore glenohumeral joint stability in a cadaveric model without glenoid bone loss (1) comparable to the native state and (2) comparable to the Latarjet procedure.

Purpose: Cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) share age as a main risk factor and thus have a high coincidence. Both conditions substantially reduce visual acuity. This study aimed to assess the impact of cataract surgery on visual acuity, retinal morphology, and VEGF inhibitor therapy in patients with AMD.

Objectives: The seasonality of conception and birth has intrigued scientists for over 200 years. Since the 1970s, peak birth months in the northern hemisphere have shifted from early spring to late summer, influenced by oral contraceptives and socio-economic factors. The division of Germany from the end of World War II until reunification in 1990 offers a unique opportunity to analyze these influences while both regions had equal access to contraception.

Background: A lack of serotonin (also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in the brain due to deficiency of the rate-limiting enzyme in 5-HT synthesis, tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), was recently reported to result in impaired maternal affiliation across species, including mice, rats, and monkeys. In rodents, this was reflected in a lack of preference for maternal odors and reduced levels of isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations (USV), possibly contributing to a severe growth retardation phenotype.
Methods: Here, we tested whether growth retardation, maternal affiliation deficits, and/or impairments in socio-affective communication caused by Tph2 deficiency can be rescued through early social enrichment in rats.

Many European healthcare systems emphasize value-based care to improve outcomes and control costs. Assessing function and satisfaction in hand surgery relies on patient reported outcome measures. This study evaluates the use of these outcome measures across Europe, focusing on diversity and language validation.

Background: Popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by orofacial, cutaneous, musculoskeletal, and genital anomalies. Surgical interventions are necessary to address the severe knee flexion contracture and equinovarus deformity, but there are no established treatment guidelines.
Methods: We present the case of a one-year-old patient with PPS and discuss the challenges in managing the knee deformity.

Background: Trichophyton mentagrophytes ITS genotype VII (TMVII) has recently been identified in France as the causative agent of dermatophyte infections transmitted during sexual activity among men who have sex with men (MSM).
Objectives: Our objective was to provide new insights into the epidemiology, clinical presentation and treatment of TMVII infections based on cases diagnosed from October 2022 to September 2023 in three medical mycology laboratories in Paris. Additionally, we aimed to perform molecular characterization of TMVII strains collected in Paris, as well as in Switzerland.

Barbershops are important venues for men to get their hair and beards done and hence, play an important role in men's social life. But barbershops can also be a source of infections. The barber's profession brings the barber into direct contact with customers who may carry pathogens, and contaminated instruments or skin-to-skin contacts might transmit infectious agents.

The aim of the present study was to assess systemic circulatory and tissue activities of both the classical arm and of the alternative arm of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in a new transgenic rat line (TG7371) that expresses angiotensin-(1-7) (ANG 1-7)-producing fusion protein; the results were compared with the activities measured in control transgene-negative Hannover Sprague-Dawley (HanSD) rats. Plasma and tissue concentrations of angiotensin II (ANG II) and ANG 1-7, and kidney mRNA expressions of receptors responsible for biological actions of ANG II and ANG 1-7 [i.e.

Anti-PD-1, trastuzumab, and chemotherapy are used in the treatment of patients with advanced HER2-positive esophagogastric adenocarcinoma (EGA), but long-term survival remains limited. Herein, we report extended follow-up data from the INTEGA trial (NCT03409848), which investigated the efficacy of the anti-PD-1 nivolumab, trastuzumab, and FOLFOX chemotherapy (FOLFOX arm) in comparison to a chemotherapy-free regimen involving nivolumab, trastuzumab, and the anti-CTLA-4 ipilimumab (Ipi arm) in the first-line setting for advanced disease. The 12-month overall survival (OS) showed no statistical difference between the arms, with 57% OS (95% CI: 41%-71%) in the Ipi arm and 70% OS (95% CI: 54%-82%) in the FOLFOX arm.

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases are a family of parasitic diseases which occur globally or are frequent in special settings. Epidermal parasitic skin diseases occur in travelers and migrants, although epidemiology and/or clinical manifestations differ between these groups. The objective of this study is to summarize the existing knowledge concerning tungiasis, hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans, scabies, pediculosis capitis and pediculosis corporis in the context of travel and migration, and to identify risk factors for infection.

Metabolomic microbiome research has become an important topic for understanding agricultural, ecological as well as health correlations. Only the determination of both the non-volatile and the volatile organic compound (mVOC) production by microorganisms allows a holistic view for understanding the complete potential of metabolomes and metabolic capabilities of bacteria. In the recent past, more and more bacterial headspaces and culture media were analyzed, leading to an accumulation of about 3500 mVOCs in the updated mVOC 4.

The number of human infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria is increasing worldwide and constitutes a serious threat to human health. Given the lack of novel antibiotic compounds worsening this dilemma, alternative antibiotic-independent treatment and prevention strategies of infectious diseases applying natural compounds appear highly appreciable. Given the long-known health-beneficial and disease-alleviating properties of Cannabis, we performed a literature search summarizing current knowledge regarding the antibacterial effects of extracts from different parts of the Cannabis sativa plant and of defined Cannabis-derived molecules and their potential mode of action.

"Medical scientists" are postgraduate investigators who are engaged in biomedical research, and either hold a biomedical PhD or are qualified in medicine but do not participate in patient care. Medical scientists constitute ~40% of staff at medical faculties and >90% at nonuniversity medical research institutions in Germany. However, medical scientists in Germany face limited long-term career prospects and a lack of dedicated training and support programmes.
