In medical and biomedical fields, enzyme-mimetic nanomaterials have garnered significant interest as efficacious signal enhancers for biocatalyst-linked immunosorbent assays (BLISA). Despite the burgeoning enthusiasm, engineering artificial biocatalysts that exhibit both exceptional catalytic proficiency and pronounced colorimetric signal output remains a formidable challenge. Inspired by the heme structures and biocatalytic activities of horseradish peroxidase, we introduce the synthesis of vanadium single-atoms (SAV) coordinated artificial peroxidases as BLISA for highly sensitive and selective carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) immunoassay.

The European Union's Biodiversity Strategy 2030, reinforced by the new Nature Restoration Law, targets restoring a minimum of 25,000 km of 'free-flowing rivers' by 2030. Central to this endeavor is the imperative to restore natural longitudinal and lateral connectivity of rivers and floodplains. Focused on scrutinizing data, methods, and tools employed in published studies from 2000 to 2023, our literature review reveals both encouraging developments and significant challenges at pan-European and regional scales to prioritize barriers for removal.

The ecological state of aquatic ecosystems is systematically monitored using various bioindicators in many countries worldwide. In the European Union, freshwater biomonitoring is the central component of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) and currently based on morpho-taxonomic methods. DNA metabarcoding is a novel approach to assess the ecological state fast and efficiently based on organismal DNA signatures and thereby support and upscale biomonitoring.

In the more than 50 years since the initial conceptualization of the suture zone, little work has been done to take full advantage of the comparative capability of these geographic regions. During this time, great advances have been made in hybrid zone research that have provided invaluable insight in speciation and evolution. Hybrid zones have long been recognized to be "windows to the evolutionary process".

Background: According to the European Association of Urology guidelines, the limit for monopolar, transurethral resection (M-TURP) in BPH- therapy is a volume of 80 g. However, whether larger prostates can also be resected transurethrally might also depend on the experience of the surgeon and especially the resected volume and speed of the resection. Little is known about the latter, and this paper aims to these factors.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies have transformed the treatment of retinal diseases. However, VEGF signaling is only one component of the complex, multifactorial pathophysiology of retinal diseases, and many patients have residual disease activity despite ongoing anti-VEGF treatment. The angiopoietin/tyrosine kinase with immunoglobulin and epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Ang/Tie2) signaling pathway is critical to endothelial cell homeostasis, survival, integrity, and vascular stability.

Although left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are an alternative to heart transplantation, their artificial surfaces often lead to serious thrombotic complications requiring high-risk device replacement. Coating blood-contacting surfaces with antithrombogenic endothelial cells is considered an effective strategy for preventing thrombus formation. However, this concept has not yet been successfully implemented in LVADs, as severe cell loss is to be expected, especially on the impeller surface with high prothrombogenic supraphysiological shear stress.
