Ghrelin is an orexigenic peptide hormone synthesized in times of stress and hunger and alterations of the ghrelin system following acute stressors could be repeatedly shown in humans. However, little data exists on long-term effects of trauma on the ghrelin system. We aimed to investigate the influence of childhood trauma on total ghrelin serum levels in a large, population-based study.

Ultrasound has become an essential diagnostic tool in gynecology, and every practicing gynecologist must be able to differentiate normal from pathologic findings, such as benign or malignant pelvic masses, adnexal torsion, pelvic inflammation disease, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancies, and congenital uterine malformations at least on a basic level. A standardized approach to the correct settings of the ultrasound system, the indications for gynecologic ultrasound investigations, and the sonographic appearance of normal anatomy and common pathologic findings in the standard planes are important prerequisites for safe and confident clinical management of gynecologic patients. Based on current publications and different national and international guidelines, updated DEGUM, ÖGUM, and SGUM recommendations for the performance of basic gynecologic ultrasound examinations were established.

Calcium imaging is an important functional tool for analysing ion channels, transporters and pumps for drug screening in living cells. Depicted eukaryotic cell-free systems utilize microsomes, derived from the endoplasmic reticulum to incorporate the synthesized membrane proteins-like ion channels. Carboxylesterase is required to cleave the acetoxymethyl ester moiety of the chemical calcium indicators in order to ensure its immobility across the endoplasmic reticulum membrane.

Anogenital and oropharyngeal infections with human papilloma viruses (HPV) are common. Clinically manifest disease may significantly impact quality of life; the treatment of HPV-associated lesions is associated with a high rate of recurrence and invasive neoplasms, such as cervical, anal, vulvar, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers, which are characterized by significant morbidity and mortality. Vaccination against HPV is an effective and safe measure for the primary prevention of HPV-associated lesions, but immunization rates are still low in Germany.

Background And Purpose: Accurate and rapid assessment of coagulation status is necessary to guide thrombolysis or reversal of anticoagulation in stroke patients, but commercially available point-of-care (POC) assays are not suited for coagulation testing in patients treated with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). We aimed to evaluate the direct thrombin monitoring (DTM) test card by Helena Laboratories (Texas, United States) for anti-IIa-specific POC coagulation testing, hypothesizing that its POC-ecarin clotting time (POC-ECT) accurately reflects dabigatran plasma concentrations.
Methods: A prospective single-center diagnostic study (ClinicalTrials.

Retrospective analysis of the long-term results of a randomized controlled trial comparing alemtuzumab (ALEM) and antithymocyte globulin (ATG) as induction therapy in simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK) to address individualized long-term immunosuppression. Between 2006 and 2010 a total of 30 SPKs were randomized to treatment with ALEM plus tacrolimus (TAC) monotherapy (Group A, n=14) versus ATG induction plus TAC, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and steroids (Group B, n=16), followed by individualized long-term immunosuppression. We here present the long-term results for graft survival, graft function, and major complications.

Background: There has been increasing evidence in recent years that breast implants can, in rare cases, be associated with the development of an anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL).
Methods: This review is based on relevant publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed for articles that appeared from the time of the initial description of breast-implant-associated ALCL onward (1997 to January 2018), and by a further search in German nationwide databases.
Results: 516 pathologically confirmed cases of breast-implant-associated (BIA) ALCL were documented around the world until February 2018; seven of these arose in Germany and were reported to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte, BfArM).
