Background: According to the European Association of Urology guidelines, the limit for monopolar, transurethral resection (M-TURP) in BPH- therapy is a volume of 80 g. However, whether larger prostates can also be resected transurethrally might also depend on the experience of the surgeon and especially the resected volume and speed of the resection. Little is known about the latter, and this paper aims to these factors.

Article Synopsis
  • OnabotulinumtoxinA detrusor injection (OnabotA DI) is a treatment for patients with overactive bladder issues that was approved 10 years ago, often performed under local anesthesia (LA) or general anesthesia (GA).
  • In a study of 104 patients, those under LA reported higher anxiety and pain compared to those under GA, particularly during the first injection, but surprisingly still preferred LA despite these concerns.
  • The findings highlighted a notable decrease in anxiety for repeat injections with LA, suggesting that familiarity with the procedure could ease patient anxiety over time, even though pain was significantly lower with GA.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Long-term factor Xa (FXa) inhibition shows promise in reducing inflammation and improving outcomes after heart attacks and strokes by impacting platelet function.
  • In experiments with mice, chronic FXa inhibition led to smaller brain and heart injury sizes and better cardiac function compared to acute inhibition.
  • Analysis of patients revealed that those receiving FXa inhibitors had reduced infarct sizes and showed changes in platelet proteins that suggest decreased release of substances that promote inflammation and clotting.

Clinical and radiographic outcomes after subduro-peritoneal shunt insertion in adults.

Clin Neurol Neurosurg

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Charité - University Hospital Berlin, Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin, Hindenburgdamm 30, Berlin 12203, Germany.

Background: Subdural collections consist amongst others of cerebrospinal, inflammatory, haemorrhagic or infective fluid. While these accumulations can be treated with conservative or surgical measures, such as burr hole evacuation or craniotomy, clinicians may resort to implantation of a subduro-peritoneal shunt, due to their high recurrence rates. While this treatment option is widely used in the pediatric population, its efficacy and safety in adults is scarcely reported.

Platelets are crucial in thrombus formation during ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In addition, they also play an important role in postischemic thromboinflammation, which is determined by the interplay between activated platelets and neutrophils. The latter form neutrophil extracellular traps, which are detectable in plasma as citrullinated histone H3-deoxyribonucleic acid-DNA complexes.
