Background: Bladder cancer (BCa) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, and its prognostication and treatment remains challenging. The fast growth of various cancer cells requires reprogramming of its energy metabolism using aerobic glycolysis as a major energy source. However, the prognostic and therapeutic value of glycolysis-related genes in BCa remains to be determined.

Nonacademic predictors of China medical licensing examination.

Background: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners.

Methods: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) and structural equation model (SEM) analyses to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance from 98 candidate variables including early life events, physical conditions, psychological and personality assessments, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic conditions.

Patients And Methods: Evidence on HETF care management in the elderly was retrieved from Chinese and international databases, guidelines, and websites of professional associations, including systematic reviews and expert consensuses, using the keywords of home enteral nutrition, home tube feeding, old, elder, home care, etc. The literature considered in this study was published from April 2019 to April 2024.

Background: We investigated the consistency and accuracy of the Index of Consciousness (IoC) and the Bispectral Index (BIS) in monitoring the sedative effect of ciprofol during the induction of general anesthesia. There is extensive literature that reports good consistency and correlations between the IoC1 and the BIS in reflecting the sedation levels induced by propofol and sevoflurane but not by ciprofol.

Objective: The aim was to compare the consistency and accuracy of the IoC and BIS in monitoring the sedative effect of ciprofol during the induction of general anesthesia.

Approximately 22 % of human colorectal cancers (CRC) are characterized by IGF2 overexpression, and the tumor-promoting role of IGF2 has been widely reported. Despite promising preclinical results, IGF2 signaling inhibition therapy has exhibited limited efficacy in treating unselected patients with CRC. Recent evidence suggests that IGF2-high CRC are more sensitive to IGF2 signaling blockade therapy in immune-deficient mice, suggesting that IGF2-high CRC can benefit from IGF2 signaling blockade therapy.

Loss of Mist1 alters the characteristics of Paneth cells and impacts the function of intestinal stem cells in physiological conditions and after radiation injury.

Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and Paneth cells (PCs) reside at the bottom of the crypts of Lieberkühn in the small intestine. Recent studies have shown that the transcription factor Mist1, also named BHLHA15, plays an important role in the maturation of PCs. Since there is an intimate interaction between PCs and ISCs, we speculated that the loss of Mist1 could impact these two neighboring cell types.

Small extracellular vesicles derived from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells alleviate radiation-induced cardiac organoid injury.

Background: Radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) is one of the most serious complications of radiation therapy (RT) for thoracic tumors, and new interventions are needed for its prevention and treatment. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from stem cells have attracted much attention due to their ability to repair injury. However, the role of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (UCMSC)-derived sEVs in protecting cardiac organoids from radiation-induced injury and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown.

Case Report: Treatment of a complex hand disfigurement injury by fully shaped reconstruction of a severed finger combined with ectopic banking.

One of the primary challenges in hand microsurgical reconstruction lies in addressing severe hand injuries, particularly those involving multiple finger amputations, as autologous replantation might not fully restore hand functionality. In such scenarios, fully shaped reconstruction of a severed finger combined with Ectopic banking could yield superior reconstructive outcomes and enhance the amputated limb's function. This case report presents a unique approach that combines ectopic replantation of an amputated finger with interphalangeal reconstruction methods to restore both the form and function of the hand.

Superhydrophilic membrane coupled with hydroxide ion-assisted bubbles for efficient separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions.

Developing a feasible and efficient membrane for the purification of surfactant-stabilized emulsions is urgently needed but impeded by the issues of membrane fouling and the inherent trade-off between separation efficiency and permeation flux. A superhydrophilic conductive membrane was developed by coating MXene/carbon nanotubes layer and polydopamine-hydrogel molecular layer, which as cathode integrates feasible hydroxide ion-assisted bubbles on its surface by electrolysis of water. These bubbles are more effective than conventional ones in removing surfactant-stabilized oil droplets because the hydroxide ions significantly promote the aggregation of oil droplets and bubbles by reducing their Debye length.

Impaired Basal Forebrain Cholinergic Neuron GDNF Signaling Contributes to Perioperative Sleep Deprivation-Induced Chronicity of Postsurgical Pain in Mice Through Regulating Cholinergic Neuronal Activity, Apoptosis, and Autophagy.

Aims: This study investigated the roles of lateral basal forebrain glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) signaling and cholinergic neuron activity, apoptosis, and autophagy dysfunction in sleep deprivation-induced increased risk of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) in mice.

Methods: Sleep deprivation (6 h per day from -1 to 3 days postoperatively) was administered to mice receiving skin/muscle incision and retraction (SMIR) to determine whether perioperative sleep deprivation induces mechanical and thermal pain hypersensitivity, increases the risk of chronic pain, and causes changes of basal forebrain neurons activity (c-Fos immunostaining), apoptosis (cleaved Caspase-3 expression), autophagy (LC3 and p62 expression) and GDNF expression. Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-GDNF was microinjected into the basal forebrain to see whether increased GDNF expression could reverse sleep deprivation-induced changes in pain duration and cholinergic neuron apoptosis and autophagy.

The present study utilized acellular dermis microfibers to improve the DBM's clinical handling properties and to enhance bone regeneration. Donated human cadaver skin was de-epidermized and decellularized to be acellular dermal matrix (ADM), which was further processed into microfibers.

Background: This study explores the potential of the deep learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically recognize MMD using MRA images from atherosclerotic disease (ASD) and normal control (NC).

Methods: In this retrospective study in China, 600 participants (200 MMD, 200 ASD and 200 NC) were collected from one institution as an internal dataset for training and 60 from another institution were collected as external testing set for validation. All participants were divided into training (N = 450) and validation sets (N = 90), internal testing set (N = 60), and external testing set (N = 60).
