Article Synopsis
  • Ultrasound (US) images can be distorted during radiotherapy due to tissue deformation and misalignment with CT images, which hinders accurate treatment delivery.
  • A new method using pixel displacement is proposed to correct these deformations by analyzing pixel movements and aligning US with CT images more effectively.
  • Experiments showed significant improvements in correction accuracy for US images, with average errors reduced to around 0.86 mm and better alignment with CT images, demonstrating the method's effectiveness in enhancing radiotherapy outcomes.

Effectively selecting discriminative brain regions in multi-modal neuroimages is one of the effective means to reveal the neuropathological mechanism of end-stage renal disease associated with mild cognitive impairment (ESRDaMCI). Existing multi-modal feature selection methods usually depend on the Euclidean distance to measure the similarity between data, which tends to ignore the implied data manifold. A self-expression topological manifold based multi-modal feature selection method (SETMFS) is proposed to address this issue employing self-expression topological manifold.

MicroRNA-22 (miR-22) has been reported to exert a neuroprotective effect. However, the specific role and mechanism of miR-22 in ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced brain injury are still not known well. In this study, we evaluated whether miR-22 participates in I/R-induced neuronal injury and the potential mechanism by using an oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) model in vitro.

Histopathological image analysis plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of cholangiocarcinoma. This time-consuming and complex process is currently performed manually by pathologists. To reduce the burden on pathologists, this paper proposes a histopathological image classification method for cholangiocarcinoma based on spatial-channel feature fusion convolutional neural networks.

Background: The endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and unfolded protein response (UPR) pathways play an essential role in the pathophysiology of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and activation of the UPR pathway is strongly associated with tumor growth. However, the function of ERS-associated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in HCC is less recognized.

Methods: We have used TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) to obtain clinical and transcriptome data for HCC patients and the GSEA (Gene Set Enrichment Analysis) molecular signature database to get the ERS gene.

A transformer-based dual-domain network for reconstructing FOV extended cone-beam CT images from truncated sinograms in radiation therapy.

Comput Methods Programs Biomed

November 2023

The Affiliated Changzhou NO.2 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Changzhou, China; Jiangsu Province Engineering Research Center of Medical Physics, Changzhou, China. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in clinical radiotherapy, but its small field of view (sFOV) limits its application potential. In this study, a transformer-based dual-domain network (dual_swin), which combined image domain restoration and sinogram domain restoration, was proposed for the reconstruction of complete CBCT images with extended FOV from truncated sinograms.

Methods: The planning CT images with large FOV (LFOV) of 330 patients who received radiation therapy were collected.

Combined arterial spin labeling (ASL) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can reveal more comprehensive properties of the spatiotemporal and quantitative properties of brain networks. Imaging markers of end-stage renal disease associated with mild cognitive impairment (ESRDaMCI) will be sought from these properties. The current multimodal classification methods often neglect to collect high-order relationships of brain regions and remove noise from the feature matrix.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) experience changes in both the structure and function of their brain networks. In the past, cognitive impairment was often classified based on connectivity features, which only reflected the characteristics of the binary brain network or weighted brain network. It exhibited limited interpretability and stability.

Mortality from non cancer causes in patients with gallbladder cancer (GBC) still unclear. This study evaluated the causes and risk factors of non cancer death during different follow-up periods after GBC diagnosis. Non cancer causes of death for GBC patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2017 in Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database were analyzed and standardized mortality rates (SMR) for each non cancer death were calculated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the benefits and drawbacks of various immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) to improve clinical treatment decision-making for patients.
  • A thorough analysis of 19 randomized clinical trials with 5900 patients was performed, revealing that Pembrolizumab combined with chemotherapy offers the best overall survival and response rates, while Toripalimab plus chemotherapy shows promise for progression-free survival.
  • Findings indicate that combining chemotherapy with ICIs improves treatment efficacy for advanced head and neck cancer, highlighting the varying risks of adverse events associated with different therapies.

Division of Cardiology, Xuzhou Central Hospital, Xuzhou Clinical School of Nanjing Medical University, Xuzhou Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, Xuzhou, Jiangsu, China.

Aims: Exosomes are known as nanovesicles that are naturally secreted, playing an essential role in stem-mediated cardioprotection. This study mainly focused on investigating if exosomes derived from miR-214 overexpressing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) show more valid cardioprotective ability in a rat model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and its potential mechanisms.

Methods: Exosomes were isolated from control MSCs (Ctrl-Exo) and miR-214 overexpressing MSCs (miR-214-Exo) and then they were delivered to cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells in vitro under hypoxia and serum deprivation (H/SD) condition or in vivo in an acutely infarcted Sprague-Dawley rat heart.

One pot preparation of muti-mode nanoplatform to combat ovarian cancer.

Biomed Pharmacother

September 2023

Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, The Affiliated Changzhou No. 2 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Changzhou, China; School of Pharmacy, Changzhou University, Changzhou, Jiangsu 213164, China. Electronic address:

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynecological cancers with high mortality rate. The battle against ovarian cancer usually impaired by the evolved multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype as well as metastasis in cancers, which urgently call for the development of multi-mode strategies to overcome the MDR and reduce metastasis. Considering the good benefits of ferroptosis and photothermal therapy (PTT) in cancer management, we herein proposed a facile way to construct nanoparticle platform (Fe-Dox/PVP) composed of ferric chloride, doxorubicin (Dox) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) for the multi-mode therapy of ovarian cancer using chemotherapy, ferroptosis and mild hypothermia PTT.
