Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection continues to be a prominent cause of liver fibrosis and end-stage liver disease in China, necessitating the development of effective therapeutic strategies. This study investigated the potential of targeting TGR5 to alleviate liver fibrosis by impeding the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), which play a pivotal role in fibrotic progression. Using the human hepatic stellate cell line LX-2 overexpressing hepatitis B virus X protein (HBX), this study revealed that TGR5 activation through INT-777 inhibits HBX-induced LX-2 cell activation, thereby ameliorating liver fibrosis, which is associated with the attenuation of mitochondrial fission and introduces a novel regulatory pathway in liver fibrosis.

Background: Computed tomography (CT) is widely in clinics and is affected by metal implants. Metal segmentation is crucial for metal artifact correction, and the common threshold method often fails to accurately segment metals.

Purpose: This study aims to segment metal implants in CT images using a diffusion model and further validate it with clinical artifact images and phantom images of known size.

Background: Constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder affecting approximately 15% of the global population, leading to significant healthcare burdens. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of constipation, although causality remains uncertain due to potential confounding factors in observational studies. This study aims to clarify the causal relationships between gut microbiota and constipation using a bidirectional Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach, which helps to overcome confounding issues and reverse causality.

Article Synopsis
  • The meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of two treatment combinations for Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) in children: glucocorticoids with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) versus glucocorticoids with cyclophosphamide (CTX).
  • The study analyzed data from 10 studies involving 675 patients, revealing that the MMF combination led to significantly higher complete remission rates within 6 and 12 months, while the overall remission rates were similar for both treatments.
  • Additionally, patients receiving MMF experienced fewer adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal issues and liver function injury, compared to those on the CTX treatment regimen.

Electronic address:

In non-coplanar radiotherapy, DR is commonly used for image guiding which needs to fuse intraoperative DR with preoperative CT. But this fusion task performs poorly, suffering from unaligned and dimensional differences between DR and CT. CT reconstruction estimated from DR could facilitate this challenge.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a copper-doped carbon nanozyme (CC) that exhibits multiple enzyme-like activities to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for cancer treatment, overcoming challenges like low biocompatibility and effectiveness in the tumor environment.
  • The nanozyme was combined with a photosensitizer and gelatin to create a ROS amplifier (CCC) that enhances its biocompatibility, reduces hemolysis, and allows for enzyme-responsive degradation.
  • CCC effectively induces a “ROS storm” to destroy cancer cells by boosting ROS production through various enzyme-like activities and demonstrating strong anti-tumor effects in both lab and live tests.

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Northern Jiangsu People's Hospital, Clinical Medical College, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou 225001, China. Electronic address:

Solid tumors create a hypoxic microenvironment and this character can be utilized for cancer therapy, but the hypoxia levels are insufficient to achieve satisfactory therapeutic benefits. Some tactics have been used to improve hypoxia, which however will cause side effects due to the uncontrolled drug release. We herein report near-infrared (NIR) photoactivatable three-in-one nanoagents (PCT) to aggravate tumor hypoxia and enable amplified photo-combinational chemotherapy.

Differences in risk factors (RF) of lymph node metastasis (LNM) and prognosis between submucosal early gastric cardiac (SEGCC) and noncardiac (SEGNCC) carcinomas remain unclear. In this study, we investigated and compared RF of LNM and prognosis in 891 patients with radical gastrectomy for SEGCC (n=217) or SEGNCC (n=674). Compared with SEGNCC, SEGCC displayed significantly higher proportion of elderly patients (70 y or above), the elevated macroscopic type, well/moderately differentiated tubular and low-grade papillary adenocarcinomas, as well as low-grade tumor budding, but lower prevalence of the depressed macroscopic type, poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma, mixed adenocarcinoma, poorly cohesive carcinoma, lymphovascular invasion (LVI), perineural invasion, and high-grade tumor budding.

Background: The information between multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is complementary. Combining multiple modalities for brain tumor image segmentation can improve segmentation accuracy, which has great significance for disease diagnosis and treatment. However, different degrees of missing modality data often occur in clinical practice, which may lead to serious performance degradation or even failure of brain tumor segmentation methods relying on full-modality sequences to complete the segmentation task.

Developing a neurovascular bone repair scaffold with an appropriate mechanical strength remains a challenge. Calcium phosphate (CaP) is similar to human bone, but its scaffolds are inherently brittle and inactive, which require recombination with active ions and polymers for bioactivity and suitable strength. This work discussed the synthesis of amorphous magnesium-calcium pyrophosphate (AMCP) and the subsequent development of a humidity-responsive AMCP/cassava starch (CS) scaffold.

Assessment of lumbar disc herniation-impaired gait by using IMU data fusion method.

School of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Changzhou University, Changzhou, Jiangsu, China.

The inertial motion unit (IMU) is an effective tool for monitoring and assessing gait impairment in patients with lumbar disc herniation(LDH). However, the current clinical assessment methods for LDH gait focus on patients' subjective scoring indicators and lack the assessment of kinematic ability; at the same time, individual differences in the motor function degradation of the healthy and affected lower limbs of LDH patients are also ignored. To solve this problem, we propose an LDH gait feature model based on multi-source adaptive Kalman data fusion of acceleration and angular velocity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative illness, characterized by memory loss and cognitive decline, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. AD is characterized by senile plaques made up of amyloid β (Aβ) protein, intracellular neurofibrillary tangles caused by hyperphosphorylation of tau protein linked with microtubules, and neuronal loss. Currently, therapeutic treatments and nanotechnological developments are effective in treating the symptoms of AD, but a cure for the illness has not yet been found.
