The occurrence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium (oo)cysts in drinking source water poses a serious public health risk. Here, we established a method that combines membrane concentration and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to quantify Giardia and Cryptosporidium in drinking water. The water samples were filtered through a cellulose membrane to collect Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and then nucleic acids were extracted.

Salmonella is a crucial food-borne pathogen causing food poisoning, leading to severe public health events. Here, we developed a technique by integrating recombinase polymerase amplification with CRISPR-LbCas12a and employing two targets with engineered crRNA for detection of Salmonella (RPA-LbCas12a-TTECDS). Our findings revealed that this novel method rapidly detects trace Salmonella in food through fluorescence intensity and provides a template for other food-borne pathogen detection methods.

Norovirus is one of the major causes of outbreaks and sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis in school children. Obtaining local genotype diversity information regarding norovirus is important for developing and evaluating prevention strategies of the transmission of this virus in school children. Clinical specimens, obtained from the routine acute gastroenteritis surveillance network from 2018 to 2019, were primarily tested using commercial real-time PCR Kit.

Purpose: To determine whether hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) and high lipid accumulation product (LAP) preceded the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and to investigate the interactions of HTGW and LAP with other components of metabolic syndrome on the risk of T2DM.
Methods: A total of 15,717 eligible participants without baseline T2DM and aged 35 and over were included from a Chinese rural cohort. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the association of HTGW and LAP with the incidence of T2DM, and the restricted cubic spline model was used to evaluate the dose-response association.

To investigate the association of inducible co-stimulator (ICOS) and CD28 gene polymorphisms with pulmonary tuberculosis susceptibility. In this case-control study, from Mar 2015 to Sep 2016, peripheral venous blood of 100 pulmonary tuberculosis patients (pulmonary tuberculosis group) in the Jintan People's Hospital of Changzhou and 100 community physical examination volunteers (health control group) were collected. A total of 56 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in ICOS and CD28 sequences were selected and SNP genotype and allele frequency were analyzed using the next-generation sequencing technology.

Objective: To study the effects of educational background of men who have sex with men (MSM) on their high risk sexual behaviors and the HIV/STI infection rates.
Methods: During July to November of 2009 and March to October of 2010, snowball and convenience sampling methods were adopted to recruit MSM from MSM venues and via the internet in Changzhou city of Jiangsu province, and finally 659 MSM were conducted a questionnaire survey and serological testing. According to the educational background of MSM, they were divided into 3 groups, that is, junior high school group (206 cases), high school group (254 cases), and university group (199 cases).
Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of HIV and syphilis, incidence of syphilis and to identify the correlates of syphilis infection among heterosexual male attendees of sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics (MSC).
Methods: A cohort study of one-year duration was conducted in Yangzhou and Changzhou cities in Jiangsu province of China. The baseline survey commenced in June 2009, recruited 1225 consenting adult MSCs (609 in Yangzhou and 617 in Changzhou) through STI-clinic based convenience sampling.
Objective: To explore the expression of costimulatory molecule CD40 in thyroid tissue of Graves' disease patients and understand its immune pathogenetic significance.
Methods: From January 2008 to December 2011, 8 patients undergoing partial thyroidectomy for Graves' disease (n = 3) or non-toxic goiter (n = 5) at Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University and Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were enrolled. Using the method of immunohistochemistry, the expression of CD40 was detected in their thyroid tissues.

Objective: To develop a method for comparing the haplotypes of pfcrt polymorphism of Hainan Province with those from other areas of the world.
Methods: Nested PCR was used to amplify the polymorphic region including codon 72 to 76 and 97 of pfcrt gene. The PCR products were digested by ApoI restriction endonuclease to determine the allelic types.
