Chronic spinal cord compression is the result of mechanical pressure on the spinal cord, which in contrast to traumatic spinal cord injury, leads to slowly progressing nerve degeneration. These two types of spinal cord injuries may trigger similar mechanisms, including motoric nerve cell apoptosis and autophagy, however, depending on differences in the underlying injury severity, nerve reactions may predominantly involve the conservation of function or the initiation of functions for the removal of irreversibly damaged cells. p62 is a multidomain adapter protein, which is involved in apoptosis and cell survival as well as autophagy, and is a common component of protein aggregations in neurodegenerative diseases.

In this study, we used microarray analysis to investigate the biogenesis and progression of intervertebral disc degeneration. The gene expression profiles of 37 disc tissue samples obtained from patients with herniated discs and degenerative disc disease collected by the National Cancer Institute Cooperative Tissue Network were analyzed. Differentially expressed genes between more and less degenerated discs were identified by significant analysis of microarray.

Hip resurfacing (HR) is being used increasingly as an alterative to total hip arthroplasty in osteonecrosis (ON) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) of the hip. We performed 141 consecutive HR arthroplasties in 111 patients comprising 3 etiology groups: ON, AS, and osteoarthritis (OA). After retrospective study of retrieved components, we hypothesized that the main reason for revision was femoral loosening in the ON group (4 of 46 hips; 8.

Phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) inhibitors administered prior to or immediately after experimental stroke confer acute neuroprotection. However, it remains unclear if delayed treatment with a PTEN inhibitor improves long-term functional recovery after stroke. We addressed the issue in this study.

Objectives: Blood blister-like aneurysms (BBAs) are aneurysms arising from the nonbranching arterial trunk, which are usually small and located at the anterior wall of supraclinoid internal carotid artery. These aneurysms are quite dangerous due to their fragile neck. This paper aims to evaluate the application of stent-assisted coil embolization in the treatment of BBAs.

To investigate the pathogenesis of abnormal ossification of the hip ligament in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) by comparing gene expression profiles of the hip ligament in patients with AS to those in normal persons using DNA microarray technology, we studied 18 patients with AS (case group) who underwent total hip arthroplasty in our department from March 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010 and compared them with 6 patients with femoral neck fracture (control group) who underwent total hip replacement. We screened the first five patients in each group with the HumanWG-6 v3.0 Expression BeadChip.

Objective: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is now recognized as a comorbid condition, especially in men with cardiovascular disease or diabetes mellitus. This randomized controlled trial was to examine the effect of long-term small-dose tadalafil in the treatment of ED.
Methods: A total of 98 men older than 18 years with at least a 6-month ED history were enlisted and divided into two groups to receive once-daily treatment with tadalafil at 5 mg (n = 60) and 20 mg (n = 38), respectively, for 12 months.

Background: Recently, the new generation of metal-on-metal total hip resurfacing arthroplasty is well known for preserving the proximal femoral bone stock, minimizing the risk of postoperative dislocation using large femoral heads, and expecting low wear of metal-on-metal articulation for longer prosthesis survival. It also has the advantage in biomechanical loading in the proximal femur. The osteoarthritis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) has been the most common reason for total hip arthroplasty.

Status of research and application of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in intervention treatment of primary liver carcinoma in the latest three years was reviewed in this paper. The effects of TCM combining interventional therapy mainly embodied in three aspects: the anti-tumor action, the effects for treatment of embolism syndrome and the effects for preventing and treating recurrence and metastasis. And the keystone in further researches was also pointed out, it should be focused on anti-angiogenesis of tumor by TCM for better preventive and therapeutic effects on post-intervention recurrence and metastasis.
