Purpose: To assess the utility of signal intensity ratio (SIR) in distinguishing between mass-forming chronic pancreatitis (MFCP) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), thereby reducing unnecessary pancreatectomies or delayed diagnosis brought by misdiagnosis.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 170 participants (34 with MFCP and 136 with PDAC) who underwent radical pancreatic surgery and were diagnosed via specimen pathology. The study group was carefully selected with a 1:4 ratio matching for sex, age, and operation time between two entities.

Article Synopsis
  • * In their study, mice were used to mimic lung injury caused by sepsis, and they looked at different proteins and how they affect each other.
  • * They found that increasing TRIM21 levels helped reduce inflammation and lung damage by affecting another protein called IRF1, which is linked to TREM2, leading to better lung health in sepsis-injured mice.

Article Synopsis
  • RPE cells are crucial for retinal health and immune balance; this study explores Kaempferol's (Kae) protective effects against RPE cell damage.
  • Bioinformatics identified nine hub genes from a specific dataset, and lab tests showed that Kae enhances RPE cell growth and reduces cell death and inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
  • Findings suggest that Kae's protective effects operate through specific signaling pathways, highlighting its potential as a treatment for retinal disorders related to RPE cell damage.

Background And Objective: The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significant and succinct indicators of systemic inflammation. We assessed the influence of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) on NLR and PLR in patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC).

Methods: We reviewed the medical data of patients with LA-NSCLC who underwent SBRT between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer with a very low survival rate of 7.2% in China, and current diagnostic methods are limited.
  • This study explores the use of circulating free DNA (cfDNA) from blood samples as a liquid biopsy to improve PDAC diagnosis, focusing on genomic and epigenomic changes.
  • Results showed that a diagnostic model using specific cfDNA methylation markers significantly improved sensitivity and specificity for detecting PDAC compared to traditional methods, especially when combined with the CA19-9 biomarker.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at two ways to connect parts of the stomach and intestines after surgery for pancreatic issues: hand-sewn and stapled methods.
  • It found that the hand-sewn method caused fewer problems with delayed stomach emptying and other issues compared to the stapled method.
  • However, the hand-sewn method took longer to perform in surgery but resulted in shorter hospital stays and lower costs for patients.

  • This study investigates the best nutritional support after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), comparing early oral feeding (EOF) to nasojejunal early enteral nutrition (NJEEN).
  • A retrospective analysis of 428 patients revealed that EOF significantly reduced the incidence of delayed gastric emptying compared to NJEEN, indicating it as a more effective option.
  • The results support EOF as a safe and feasible method for postoperative nutrition, suggesting its recommendation following PD.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has become a global health problem which has almost highest morbidity and mortality in all types of cancers. This study aimed to uncover the biological functions and underlying mechanism of MCM8 in the development and progression of CRC. The expression level of MCM8 was found to be upregulated in CRC tissues and significantly associated with tumor grade and patients' survival.

Background: In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) as replacement strategy of conventionally fractionated radiation therapy in stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients unfit for concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CRT).

Methods: We analyzed the clinical outcomes in patients with unresectable stage III NSCLC who received SBRT from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2018. Both induction and consolidation chemotherapy were allowed.

Objective: The aim of the study is to reinterpret the prognostic prediction of p53 expression categories in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with exploration of the relationship between TP53 mutation genotype and p53 expression pattern.

Methods: Data were retrospectively collected from consecutive patients who underwent primary pancreatic resection. Complete loss of function of TP53 is defined as nonsense and frameshift mutations.

Purpose: Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are gradually becoming common in the emergency department, though the incidence is low and the prognosis is fair, as the symptoms are similar to other intra-abdominal diseases, rapid and accurate diagnosis of the causative agents is essential for clinical management. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in detecting IAI in the emergency department.

Patients And Methods: This was a retrospective, single-centered study including patients admitted to the emergency department from January 1st, 2021 to August 31st, 2022 with diagnosis of IAI.

Accurate segmentation of whole slide images is of great significance for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. However, developing an automatic model is challenging due to the complex content, limited samples, and high sample heterogeneity of pathological images. This paper presented a multi-tissue segmentation model for whole slide images of pancreatic cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study developed a new staging model specifically for assessing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients receiving radiotherapy treatments, aiming to improve prognosis classification.
  • It involved analyzing a training cohort of 658 patients and a validation cohort of 533 patients, categorizing them into four main stages based on tumor characteristics and overall health.
  • Results indicated that the staging model effectively distinguished between patient survival outcomes, with median survival significantly decreasing from stage I (63 months) to stage IV (less than 9 months), suggesting its potential utility for radiation oncologists.

After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, some patients are not recommended to return to high-level physical activity because they fail to pass return-to-sports tests. The kinematic difference between these patients and those who pass the return-to-sports tests is unclear. Eighty-two patients who received anatomic single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction for unilateral ACL injury underwent return-to-sport tests during a hospital visit at a minimum of 9 months (9-11 months) of follow-up.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the main cause of vision loss in diabetic patients, which cannot be completely resolved by typical blood sugar control. Inflammation influences the development of DR, so reducing the inflammatory response in DR patients is crucial to the prevention of DR. Therefore, we explored the regulatory effect of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) exosomes on inflammation in DR mice.

Due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), the delivery of general drugs into the brain tissue remains to be a tricky problem. For patients with brain metastases from breast cancer, drug delivery systems must overcome this physical barrier. Targeted nano vehicles arise as a promising alternative to deliver drugs to brain tissues successively.
