Scutellarin (SC), mainly extracted from the Chinese herb Erigeron breviscapus (vant.), has been reported to possess various pharmacological activities; however, its effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD) have not been systemically reported. The protective effects of SC on AD were investigated using an L‑glutamic acid (L‑Glu)‑damaged HT22 cell apoptosis model and an aluminum chloride plus D‑galactose‑induced AD mouse model.

Background: Patients with metastatic spine tumors may suffer from pain or neurologic deficit, and the disease may be detected in patients with a known malignancy. Sonic hedgehog (SHH) has received special attention due to its role in cancers. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of epigenetic silencing of SHH on antitumor immune response and tumor growth by regulating the hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway in metastatic spine tumors.

Astilbin exhibits several pharmacological activities, including hypoglycemic, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate the pro-apoptotic activities of astilbin on breast cancer in cells and mice. It was demonstrated that astilbin significantly reduced the cell viability, increased the cell apoptosis rate, suppressed the migration ability, caused the dissipation of the mitochondrial membrane potential and induced the overaccumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells after 12 or 24 h of exposure.

In this study, we investigated how miR-10b-3p regulated the proliferation, migration, invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at both in vitro and in vivo levels. CMTM5 was among the differentially expressed genes (data from TCGA). The expression of miR-10b-3p and CMTM5 was detected by qRT-PCR and Western blot (WB).

Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) is a periplasmic protein, and immunization of mice with recombinant Cu-Zn SOD protein confers protection against infection. However, the role of Cu-Zn SOD during the process of infection remains unknown. Here, we report that Cu-Zn SOD is secreted into culture medium and is translocated into host cells independent of type IV secretion systems (T4SS).

Type II cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (PKG II) is a membrane-anchored enzyme expressed mainly in the intestinal mucosa and the brain, and is associated with various physiological or pathological processes. Upregulation of PKG II is known to induce apoptosis and inhibit proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells. The inhibitory effect of PKG II has been shown to be dependent on the inhibition of the activation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and blockade of EGFR downstream signal transduction However, it remains unclear whether similar phenomena/mechanisms exist and whether these effects are independent of cGMP or cGMP analogues.

The present study successfully demonstrated the neuroprotective effects of purified Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBPS02) against glutamate (L‑Glu)‑induced differentiated PC12 (DPC12) cell apoptosis. Purified polysaccharide was obtained by using a diethylaminoethyl‑52 cellulose anion exchange column and a Sepharose G‑100 column. During identification and characterization, LBPS02 was validated to be a fraction with 68 kDa molecular weight, and with a structure containing 1→3, 1→4 and 1→6 linkages.

In this study, novel ZIF-67@carbon fiber composites were fabricated by a simple and facile approach. In order to explore the influence of carbon fiber structure on enhancing the electrocatalytic efficiency of the ZIF-67, different structural carbon fibers (hollow porous carbon fiber (PCF) and solid carbon fiber (SCF)) were used for preparing ZIF-67/carbon fiber catalysts. ZIF-67/carbon fiber composites were characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical methods.

Due to substantial morbidity and complications including nephropathy, a search for alternative treatment of diabetes mellitus is urgently required. The present study aimed to investigate the hypoglycemic and anti-diabetic nephropathy activities of polysaccharides separated from (AAP). Diet streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats were orally treated with metformin (100 mg/kg; positive control) and AAP (100 and 400 mg/kg) for four weeks, and parameters in the serum and liver associated with blood glucose, free radicals and nephropathy were determined.

Progress in cancer biology has led to an increasing discovery of oncogenic alterations of the platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFRs) in cancers. In addition, their overexpression in numerous cancers invariably makes PDGFRs and platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) prognostic and treatment markers in some cancers. The oncologic alterations of the PDGFR/PDGF system affect the extracellular, transmembrane and tyrosine kinase domains as well as the juxtamembrane segment of the receptor.

The platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) and their receptors (PDGFRs) play a key role in signaling pathways in oncogenesis. The overexpression of PDGFs and PDGFRs and the oncogenic alterations of these receptors have been implicated in human cancers and correlated significantly with poor outcomes. This review discusses the biology of the PDGF isoforms and receptors briefly, and their role in oncogenesis.
