Celecoxib has been shown to have antitumor effect in previous studies but the mechanisms are unclear. The effect of celecoxib on cytosolic Ca(2+) concentrations ([Ca(2+)]i) and viability in HA59T human hepatoma cells was explored. The Ca(2+)-sensitive fluorescent dye fura-2 was applied to measure [Ca(2+)]i.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a complicated disease involving several pathogenic mechanisms. Microarray technology provides a high-throughput means of identifying differentially expressed genes in patients with OSA.
Methods: An Affymetrix U133A gene chip was used to globally analyze the transcriptome of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in patients with OSA and nonapneic control participants after overnight polysomnography.

Aims: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Limited data, however, are available on predictors of CIN in PCI for chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesions. The aim of the study was to determine the risk of developing CIN in patients undergoing CTO PCI by studying the effects of clinical variables, interventional techniques, and CTO lesion characteristics on renal function.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a serious disease worldwide and it leads to several serious hepatic sequels. Some studies find possible correlation between HCV and ischemic heart disease in retrospective observations. Based on lacked community-based evidence, the study aims to assess correlation between ischemic heart disease and chronic HCV infection via electrocardiogram (ECG) because its abnormalities is strongly associating with cardiovascular disease mortality.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: In hyperpigmentation disorders marked by melanin overproduction in the skin, including melisma and freckles, melanogenesis is caused by tyrosinase overexpression. Natural medicinal resources, like Phyla nodiflora, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, have been used for a long time to management of dermatological conditions, such as skin inflammation and melanogenesis. Eupafolin, a functional flavonoid isolated from Phyla nodiflora, is an herbal tea constituent and possesses anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities.

Oxaliplatin treatment is a mainstay of treatment for advanced gastrointestinal tract cancer, but the underlying mechanisms of acquired oxaliplatin resistance remain largely obscured. We previously demonstrated that increased DNA repair capacity and copper-transporting ATPase 1 (ATP7A) level contributed to oxaliplatin resistance in the human gastric carcinoma cell line TSGH-S3 (S3). In the present study, we applied gene array technology to identify additional resistance factors in S3 cells.

However, little is known about the function of GRP78 in hormone-independent prostate cancer. Here, we found that the expression levels of GRP78 were higher in PC-3 cells than in DU-145 cells.

Artocarpin, a prenylated flavonoid isolated from an agricultural plant Artocarpus communis, has been documented to possess anti-inflammation and anticancer activities. As oxidative stress and inflammation promote the development of ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation-induced photodamage, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the photoprotective effect of artocarpin on UVB-induced skin damage in hairless mice. Artocarpin at a topical dose of 0.

Background: Early pulmonary edema is common after orthotopic liver transplantation. Associated pathogenic mechanisms might involve increased activity of cardiac-inhibitory systems due to increased vasodilator production, mainly nitric oxide (NO). NO is primarily responsible for flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD).

STUDY DESIGN:: A retrospective analysis of feasibility of intraoperative computed tomography (iCT) navigation for pedicle screw insertion of the thoraco-lumbar spine OBJECTIVES:: This study assessed the feasibility of an iCT navigation system by evaluating the screw insertion time, screw revision time, and learning curve of the iCT surgical team in patients who underwent thoraco-lumbar pedicle screw surgery using this navigation system. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA:: The iCT navigation system has been reported to improve the accuracy and safety of pedicle screw insertion. However, the assessment of the feasibility of spinal instrumentation guided by iCT navigation system is limited.

The current study was designed to test the efficacy of different materials used in an auricular acupressure program on weight reduction, changes to waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. This study used a randomized design with two groups who were treated with auricular acupressure using Semen Vaccariae or the Japanese Magnetic Pearl. Both groups consisted of Asian young adults with a waist circumference ≥ 80 cm in the females and ≥ 90 cm in the males.

P-cresol is a well-known uremic toxin and environmental toxicant that may affect platelet functions. In this study, p-cresol (1-5 μM) inhibited the arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation, with 47% and 82% of inhibition at concentrations of 2 and 5 μM, respectively. Under similar experimental condition, p-cresol showed little effect on the U46619-induced platelet aggregation.

In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory response and the mechanism by which dehydroepiandrosterone modulates immunity in ovalbumin-sensitized asthmatic mice. Female BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin and then treated with oral administration of dehydroepiandrosterone on days 21 to 27. The results showed dehydroepiandrosterone could suppress airway hyperresponsiveness and decrease eosinophil infiltration of the lungs in ovalbumin-sensitized mice.

Background: Perceived insufficient milk supply is common among postpartum women and is a major reason for early weaning. Studies indicate a significantly higher incidence of insufficient milk supply in women who undergo cesarean section as compared with women who undergo vaginal delivery.
Purpose: This study was designed to determine perceived milk supply in postpartum women who underwent a planned cesarean section, as well as related factors.

Cytosolic phospholipase A(2) (cPLA(2)) plays a pivotal role in mediating agonist-induced arachidonic acid (AA) release for prostaglandin (PG) synthesis during inflammation triggered by tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). However, the mechanisms underlying TNF-α-induced cPLA(2) expression and PGE(2) synthesis in human tracheal smooth muscle cells (HTSMCs) remain unknown. Here, we report that TNF-α-induced cPLA(2) protein and mRNA expression, PGE(2) production, and phosphorylation of p42/p44 MAPK, p38 MAPK, and JNK1/2, which were attenuated by pretreatment with a ROS scavenger [N-acetyl-L-cysteine, (NAC)] and the inhibitors of NADPH oxidase [apocynin (APO) and diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI)], MEK1/2 (U0126), p38 MAPK (SB202190), and JNK1/2 (SP600125) or transfection with siRNA of Nox2, p47(phox) , MEK1, p42, p38, or JNK2.

The prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) in hemodialysis patients is several times higher than among the general population, and is the main reason for amputations in this group. Patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease face higher hospitalization and mortality rates associated with cardiovascular disease than non-PAOD patients. The ankle brachial index (ABI) is a widely used PAOD screening tool that may under-estimate PAOD prevalence in the hemodialysis population in the presence of extensive vascular calcification.
