Pinin (Pnn) is a nuclear speckle-associated SR-like protein. The N-terminal region of the Pnn protein sequence is highly conserved from mammals to insects, but the C-terminal RS domain-containing region is absent in lower species. The N-terminal coiled-coil domain (CCD) is, therefore, of interest not only from a functional point of view, but also from an evolutionarily standpoint.

It has been reported that diabetes mellitus (DM) was an epidemiologically identified risk factor for development of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)/severe dengue in dengue virus (DENV) affected patients, and T helper 2 (Th2) cytokines such as interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-10 each plays an important role in the immunopathogenesis of DHF in studies involving general population. To better understand the relationship between these epidemiological and immunological findings, we performed an in vitro study evaluating the sequential immunological reactions and viral load in the DENV infected mononuclear cells of adults with type 2 DM (T2DM group, n = 33) and normal adults (control group, n = 29). We found in the T2DM group significantly higher IL-4 level on the first (P = 0.

Pinin (pnn), a nuclear and desmosome-associated SR-like protein, has been shown to play multiple roles in cell adhesion, transcriptional regulation, pre-mRNA splicing and mRNA export. Because of the embryonic lethality of pnn-deficient mice, here we used the zebrafish system to investigate the functions of pnn. Injection of morpholinos into zebrafish to knockdown pnn resulted in several obvious defective phenotypes, such as short body, bent tail, and an abnormal pigment distribution pattern.

Pnn and SR family proteins are differentially expressed in mouse central nervous system.

Histochem Cell Biol

April 2011

Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Epithelial Biology Laboratory, Department of Anatomy, Chang Gung University Medical College, 259 Wen-Hwa 1st Road, Kwei-Shan, Tao-Yuan, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Pinin (pnn) is an SR-related protein that is ubiquitously expressed in most cell types and functions in regulating pre-mRNA splicing and mRNA export. Previously, we demonstrated that pnn is expressed in all tissues during mouse embryonic development with highest levels of expression in the central nervous system (CNS). Here we show that pnn and other SR proteins including SC35 are differentially expressed in the adult mouse CNS, displaying cell type-specific distribution patterns.

SR and SR-related proteins have been implicated as trans-acting factors that play an important role in splice selection and are involved at specific stages of spliceosome formation. A well-established property of SR protein splicing factors is their ability to influence selection of alternative splice sites in a concentration-dependent manner. Identification of molecules that regulate SR family protein expression is therefore of vital importance in RNA biology.

Spatial and temporal expression profile of pinin during mouse development.

Gene Expr Patterns

August 2006

Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Science, Chang Gung University Medical College, Taiwan, ROC.

SR and SR-related proteins are splicing regulators involved in embryo development in higher eukaryotes. Pinin (pnn) is a SR-related protein localized both within nucleus (nuclear pnn, N-pnn) and at desmosome of cell-cell adhesion (desmosomal pnn, D-pnn). To investigate the role of N-pnn during mouse embryo development, we examined its expression using Northern blot, real-time RT-PCR, immunostaining, and mRNA in situ hybridization (ISH).

Tourette syndrome: not just a tic disorder.

Chang Gung Med J

August 2005

Division of Pediatric Neurology, Chang Gung Children's Hospital, Chang Gung University Medical College, Taoyuan, Taiwan, ROC.

Although tics are considered the hallmark of Tourette syndrome, arguably tics may not be the only or primary presenting symptom. For many children diagnosed with Tourette syndrome irritability, frustration intolerance, hyperactivity, inattention, ritual behavior or other difficulties may have been present a number of years before the appearance of tics. Children with Tourette syndrome are often highly co-morbid with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive symptoms, and other related behavioral problems that should be detected and treated effectively.
