Article Synopsis
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI), especially mild TBI in juveniles (mTBI-J), can lead to long-term effects such as depression and other mental disorders, as studied in young male rats.
  • While physical brain damage was minimal, mTBI-J subjects displayed significant depression-like behaviors, indicated by increased immobility in the forced swimming test and decreased sucrose preference.
  • The study found reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus of mTBI-J rats, suggesting a link between this protein and the observed behavioral changes, with potential therapeutic effects noted from a TrkB agonist treatment.

PERMIT study: a global pooled analysis study of the effectiveness and tolerability of perampanel in routine clinical practice.

J Neurol

April 2022

Department of Neurology, Christian-Doppler University Hospital, Paracelsus Medical University, Affiliated EpiCARE Partner, Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience, Salzburg, Austria.

The PERaMpanel pooled analysIs of effecTiveness and tolerability (PERMIT) study was a pooled analysis of data from 44 real-world studies from 17 countries, in which people with epilepsy (PWE; focal and generalized) were treated with perampanel (PER). Retention and effectiveness were assessed after 3, 6, and 12 months, and at the last visit (last observation carried forward). Effectiveness assessments included 50% responder rate (≥ 50% reduction in seizure frequency from baseline) and seizure freedom rate (no seizures since at least the prior visit); in PWE with status epilepticus, response was defined as seizures under control.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Linkou Medical Center and Chang Gung University, College of Medicine, Taoyuan, Taiwan; Gynecologic Cancer Research Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Linkou Medical Center, Taoyuan, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background/purpose: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) accounts for approximately 18% of all epithelial ovarian malignancies in Taiwan and portends a poor prognosis. Here, we sought to investigate whether immunohistochemistry with an anti-pan-cytokeratin antibody cocktail (AE1/AE3) can be used as an adjunct to hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining for improving the detection of isolated tumor cells (ITCs) and micrometastasis to pelvic lymph nodes (LNs). We also assessed whether these lesions may predict disease recurrence.

Synchronous endometrial and ovarian carcinomas (SEOCs) that share the same endometrioid histology are generally considered as the result of metastatic spread from one organ to another. However, SEOCs with different histologies are regarded as distinct primary lesions that arise independently from each other. This study was undertaken to compare the mutational landscape of SEOCs with different histologies to confirm or refute the hypothesis of an independent origin.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies indicate that granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (GCSF) can reduce neuropathic pain by influencing microRNA levels and cytokine activity.
  • In a controlled experiment with rats experiencing nerve injury, GCSF treatment significantly upregulated microRNA-122 expression, which was previously downregulated due to the injury.
  • GCSF treatment also led to lower levels of MCP-1—a cytokine associated with pain development—suggesting that increased microRNA-122 may help mitigate neuropathic pain by regulating specific inflammatory pathways.

We aimed to investigate the prognostic value of the relative maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) of metastatic lymph node (LN) compared with that of primary tumor (SUV / SUV) based on a pretreatment [F]-FDG PET/CT scan in patients with clinically node-positive esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (cN+ ESCC) treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT). We retrospectively evaluated cN+ ESCC patients who underwent a PET/CT scan before dCRT. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristics analysis was performed to identify the optimal cutoff value for SUV / SUV.

Background: After neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) for esophageal cancer, high pathologically complete response (pCR) rates are being achieved especially in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). An active surveillance strategy has been proposed for SCC patients with clinically complete response (cCR) after nCRT. To justify omitting surgical resection, patients with residual disease should be accurately identified.
