This multicenter study explored the survival benefits of upfront primary tumor resection (PTR) followed by first-line cetuximab plus chemotherapy in real-world patients with wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Treatment options for mCRC include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and surgery. The efficacy of upfront PTR in managing mCRC remains unclear.

Procalcitonin is a useful biomarker for infection. Over the past two decades, there has been much research on the clinical applications of procalcitonin, yet the majority of these studies have been conducted in the intensive care setting. Despite the extensive use of procalcitonin in emergency departments, there have been no guidelines focusing specifically on these clinical settings.

Background: Timely and accurate detection of pericardial effusion and assessment cardiac tamponade remain challenging and highly operator dependent.
Objectives: Artificial intelligence has advanced many echocardiographic assessments, and we aimed to develop and validate a deep learning model to automate the assessment of pericardial effusion severity and cardiac tamponade from echocardiogram videos.
Methods: We developed a deep learning model (EchoNet-Pericardium) using temporal-spatial convolutional neural networks to automate pericardial effusion severity grading and tamponade detection from echocardiography videos.

Background/aim: Irinotecan is a key component of standard first-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer. However, irinotecan-induced muscle dysfunction is a contributing factor to cancer cachexia. Here, we present the protective effect of taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid with great antioxidant properties, in attenuating muscle dysfunction induced by irinotecan.

Background: We investigated whether shock wave (SW)-pretreated autologous adipocyte-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) seeded in the cell-sheet scaffold (CSS) could inhibit left ventricular (LV) remodeling and improve LV ejection fraction (LVEF) in old myocardial infarction (MI).
Methods: Mini-pigs ( n =20) were divided into group 1 (sham-operated control), group 2 (old MI), group 3 (old MI + autologous ADMSCs/1.0×10 7 in CSS on LV myocardium), and group 4 [old MI + SW (0.

Background: The prognostic significance of margin-to-depth ratio (MDR) in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) remains unclear, particularly in comparison to traditional margin status. We aimed to examine the association between MDR and clinical outcomes in a large Taiwanese cohort.
Methods: A total of 18,324 patients with first primary OCSCC were categorized by margin status: positive (1013), <5 mm (8371), and ≥ 5 mm (8940).

Background: Hyperkalemia, characterized by elevated serum potassium levels, heightens the risk of sudden cardiac death, particularly increasing risk for individuals with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Traditional laboratory test monitoring is resource-heavy, invasive, and unable to provide continuous tracking. Wearable technologies like smartwatches with electrocardiogram (ECG) capabilities are emerging as valuable tools for remote monitoring, potentially allowing for personalized monitoring with artificial intelligence (AI)-ECG interpretation.

Background: There have been concerns about the potential cardiovascular (CV) adverse effects associated with methylphenidate (MTH) use. However, only limited evidence exists on the long-term safety of MTH.
Objective: To evaluate whether MTH use is associated with long-term CV risk.

Background: The study investigates the combined efficacy of subacromial hyaluronic acid (HA) injections and extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in managing rotator cuff lesions without complete tears.
Materials And Methods: Eligible patients were randomized into three groups: three HA injections combined with two sham ESWT (HA), three HA injections combined with one ESWT and one sham ESWT (HA + 1 ESWT), or three HA injections combined with two ESWT (HA + 2 ESWT) with an allocation ratio of 1:1:1. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Constant-Murley Score (CMS), range of motion (ROM), and muscle power of shoulder abduction (MP) were assessed preintervention and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postinitial HA injection.

Background: Robot-assisted minimally invasive oesophagectomy and conventional minimally invasive oesophagectomy are superior to open techniques. However, few studies have directly compared the outcomes of the two minimally invasive approaches.
Methods: A retrospective study of patients from six medical centres with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent minimally invasive oesophagectomy between 2015 and 2022.

Cervical cancer is a significant public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where resources for prevention and treatment are limited. Routine screening, such as the Papanicolaou test (Pap smears) and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, plays a crucial role in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. However, the participation rate in cervical cancer screening programs remains below optimal levels due to various factors.

Background: This study tested the hypothesis that combined ceftriaxone (Cef) and human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HUCDMSCs) was better than either therapy for alleviating acute septic arthritis (ASA).
Methods And Results: Adult-male C57BL/6 mice were categorized into control group (Clt), group A (ASA only), group B [ASA + Cef (5 mg/kg, IM per day, at days 2 to 16 after ASA induction)], group C [ASA + HUCDMSCs (5 × 105 per mice at days 2, 3, 4 after ASA induction)], and group D (ASA + Cef + HUCDMSCs). Animals were euthanized by day 28.

C-type lectins play a crucial role as pathogen-recognition receptors for the dengue virus, which is responsible for causing both dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). DHF is a serious illness caused by the dengue virus, which exists in four different serotypes: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. We conducted a genetic association study, during a significant DEN-2 outbreak in southern Taiwan, to explore how variations in the neck-region length of L-SIGN (also known as CD209L, CD299, or CLEC4M) impact the severity of dengue infection.

Osimertinib has demonstrated efficacy in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) T790M-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in clinical trials. However, real-world data on its effectiveness remain scarce. Taiwanese patients with T790M-positive locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC and progressive disease following treatment with at least one EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) were enrolled from the osimertinib early access program.

, a consumable mushroom, has shown a potential to enhance the production of neuroprotective bioactive metabolites. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to cognitive, physical, and psychosocial impairments, resulting in neuroinflammation and the loss of cortical neurons. In this research, the effects of mycelium, its derivative erinacine C, along with the underlying mechanisms, were examined in terms of oxidative stress modulation and neurological improvement in a rat model of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

Influenza remains one of the most serious infectious diseases. Gallic acid is one of the most common and representative phenolic acids found in various plants. This is an interesting subject to explore how gallic acid could inhibit H1N1 influenza virus infection by reducing the production of virulent proteins and interrupting autophagy machinery for influenza virus replication on the host cell.

Purpose: To assess the role of the interleukin (IL)-17 A/IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA) in Kawasaki disease (KD)-related coronary arteritis (CA).
Methods: In human study, the plasma levels of IL-17 A and coronary arteries were concurrently examined in acute KD patients. In vitro responses of human coronary endothelial cells to plasma stimulation were investigated with and without IL-17RA neutralization.
