This cross-sectional study was conducted to clarify the association between oral frailty (OF) and physical frailty (PF). In total, 308 Taiwanese middle-old (75−84 years) community-dwelling people with cognitive decline were recruited from random rural community health care centers. Eight items were considered for the evaluation of their OF status.

Background: We hypothesized that different BMI might have different impact on pre-operative MRI axillary lymph node (ALN) prediction accuracy and thereby subsequent surgical lymph node management. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of BMI on presentation, surgical treatment, and MRI performance characteristics of breast cancer with the main focus on ALN metastasis evaluation.
Methods: The medical records of patients with primary invasive breast cancer who had pre-operative breast MRI and underwent surgical resection were retrospectively reviewed.

Aims: The decrease in the number of satellite cells (SCs), contributing to myofibre formation and reconstitution, and their proliferative capacity, leads to muscle loss, a condition known as sarcopenia. Resistance training can prevent muscle loss; however, the underlying mechanisms of resistance training effects on SCs are not well understood. We therefore conducted a comprehensive transcriptome analysis of SCs in a mouse model.

Background: To evaluate the protective efficacy of a hepatitis B (HB) vaccination program in Taiwan among high-risk children.
Methods: Children born to HBeAg-positive mothers from 2001 to 2010 were invited back. Blood samples for hepatitis B virus (HBV) seromarkers were taken and the children underwent hepatobiliary ultrasonography.

We conducted a cross-sectional study to clarify the relationship between oral health and physical frailty (PF). A sample of 903 community-dwelling individuals aged ≥ 65 years were enrolled from random communities in Chiayi County. The self-perceived oral health (SPOH) and oral health assessment tool (OHAT), which consists of eight items, was used for the evaluation of their oral health status.

Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) are widely used in Asian countries. They show multiple pharmacological activities, including antiviral activities. The 5'-long terminal repeat (LTR) region of HIV-1, required for viral transcription, is a potential drug target for HIV-1 reactivation and intrinsic cell death induction of infected or latently infected cells.

Malignant gliomas are a type of central nervous system cancer with extremely high mortality rates in humans. γ-secretase has been becoming a potential target for cancer therapy, including glioma, because of the involvement of its enzymatic activity in regulating the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells. In this study, we attempted to determine whether γ-secretase activity regulates E-cadherin to affect glioma cell migration.

Although venous duplex ultrasonography (USG) is reliable for diagnosing lower extremity venous disease (LEVD), cross-sectional imaging studies were usually required before intervention or surgery. Patients of LEVD with renal insufficiency usually restrict the use of contrast-enhanced imaging modalities. In seeking an alternative imaging solution for these patients, we explore the clinical utility of triggered angiography non-contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (TRANCE-MRI) in the assessment of LEVD.

The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships among () genetic variants and development and clinicopathological characteristics of uterine cervical cancer, and patient survival in Taiwanese women. The study enrolled 125 patients with invasive cancer and 98 patients with precancerous lesions of uterine cervix, and 325 control women. genetic variants rs2120243, rs3816527, rs2305619 and rs1840680 were selected and their genotypic distributions were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Methods and Results We conducted a prospective open cohort study by using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for 2001 to 2013. Patients who were first admitted for PE and were treated by either systemic thrombolysis or CDT were included and compared.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a head and neck cancer involving epithelial squamous-cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx that mainly occurs in individuals from East and Southeast Asia. We investigated whether Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) as a complementary therapy offers benefits to these patients. We retrospectively evaluated the Taiwan Cancer Registry (Long Form) database for patients with advanced NPC, using or not using CHM, between 2007-2013.

The C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio is a proven prognostic predictor of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, the role of the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio in other head and neck cancers remains unclear. This meta-analysis explored the prognostic value of the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio in head and neck cancers.

CIL-102 (1-[4-(furo [2,3-b]quinolin-4-ylamino)phenyl]ethanone) is a major active agent and an alkaloid derivative of Camptotheca acuminata, which has valuable biological properties, including anti-tumorigenic activity. However, the molecular mechanisms of CIL-102 related to inductive apoptosis in human gastric cancer remain unclear. By using diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), annexin-V-fluorescein-isothiocyanate (FITC)/propidium iodide staining and a 2',7' -dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFDA), a Fluo-3 fluorescence staining assay, the cell death and cell viability in gastric cancer cells and an in vivo xenograft mouse model, with or without the addition of CIL-102, were measured, respectively.

Background: This study proposes a prediction model for the automatic assessment of lung cancer risk based on an artificial neural network (ANN) with a data-driven approach to the low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) standardized structure report.
Methods: This comparative validation study analysed a prospective cohort from Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. In total, 836 asymptomatic patients who had undergone LDCT scans between February 2017 and August 2018 were included, comprising 27 lung cancer cases and 809 controls.

As the performance of current fall risk assessment tools is limited, clinicians face significant challenges in identifying patients at risk of falling. This study proposes an automatic fall risk prediction model based on eXtreme gradient boosting (XGB), using a data-driven approach to the standardized medical records. This study analyzed a cohort of 639 participants (297 fall patients and 342 controls) from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Chiayi Branch, Taiwan.

In Taiwan, the incidence and prevalence of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have risen significantly in recent years. Moreover, data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) show that more than 85% of PsA patients are treated with just non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and/or conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs). Taiwanese clinicians have also expressed concerns regarding uncertainties in the diagnosis of PsA and the delayed, interrupted, and/or tapered use of biologics, as well as differences in therapeutic preferences between and within dermatologists and rheumatologists.
