Environmental antineoplastics such as sorafenib may pose a risk to humans through water recycling, and the increased risk of cardiotoxicity is a clinical issue in sorafenib users. Thus, developing strategies to prevent sorafenib cardiotoxicity is an urgent work. Empagliflozin, as a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor for type 2 diabetes control, has been approved for heart failure therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Pendred syndrome is a genetic disorder linked to mutations in the SLC26A4 gene, leading to variations in inner ear structure and hearing loss among family members with the same mutation.
  • A case study of a family of four revealed that all members had sensorineural hearing loss caused by the same genetic variant, yet they displayed different inner ear deformities.
  • The findings emphasize the importance of genetic testing for family members and the potential for diverse clinical presentations, even in individuals with identical genetic mutations.

Background: Exploring the epigenetic regulations, such as microRNA, in newborns holds significant promise for enhancing our ability to address and potentially prevent early-life developmental delays.

Objectives: Hence, this research seeks to investigate if the expression of miRNA in the umbilical cord blood of infants can forecast their developmental outcomes as they grow older.

Design And Method: We enrolled 143 full-term newborns, delivered either via cesarean section (CS) or through natural spontaneous delivery (NSD).

Whether serum Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) level at year 5 of treatment could predict hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development and mortality beyond year 5 of entecavir or tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) treatment in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with cirrhosis remain unclear. This retrospective study investigated the role of M2BPGi level at year 5 of treatment in predicting HCC and mortality beyond year 5 in CHB patients with cirrhosis. This study analyzed 1385 cirrhotic patients receiving entecavir or TDF treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Exercise is beneficial for cancer patients, especially in post-surgery rehabilitation, but there hasn’t been much research specifically on its effects after nephrectomy surgery.
  • An animal model was created to simulate nephrectomy patients with and without exercise, and bioinformatics analysis was performed on lung tissue samples using RNA sequencing data.
  • The analysis revealed that exercise improves immune-related gene expression pathways in nephrectomy models, indicating potential genetic mechanisms behind the positive effects of exercise after surgery.

Ferroptosis is an iron-driven cell-death mechanism that plays a central role in various diseases. Recent studies have suggested that baicalein inhibits ferroptosis, making it a promising therapeutic candidate. Fibroblast cultures were treated with different agents to determine the effects of baicalein on ferroptosis.

Background: Studies have demonstrated that exercise can mitigate the intensity of menstrual pain in primary dysmenorrhea, but the most effective type of exercise remains unclear. The objective of this systematic review and network meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of different exercise regimens in reducing pain associated with primary dysmenorrhoea.

Methods: Randomized controlled trials investigating the relationship between menstrual pain and exercise were selected from major electronic databases until February 2, 2024.

Purpose: The treatment of recurrent thyroid cancer with critical organ invasion is challenging. The combination of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) has been proposed as an effective option. This study evaluates outcomes for inoperable residual/recurrent differentiated thyroid cancer (rDTC) patients treated with RFA followed by EBRT.

Corneal transplantation can restore visual function when visual impairment is caused by a corneal disease. However, this treatment is associated with the scarcity of cornea donors. The suitability of corneal donation from patients with glaucoma using ocular hypotensive agents (OHAs) is controversial.

Objective: Microglia in the central nervous system regulate neuroinflammation that leads to a wide range of neuropathological alterations. The present study investigated the anti-neuroinflammatory properties of nobiletin (Nob) derivative, 5-acetoxy-6,7,8,3',4'-pentamethoxyflavone (5-Ac-Nob), in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated BV2 microglia.

Materials And Methods: By using the MTT assay, Griess method, flow cytometry, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), we determined the cell viability, the levels of nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and pro-inflammatory factors (interleukin 1 beta; IL-1β, interleukin 6; IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha; TNF-α and prostaglandin E2; PGE2) in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia.

This study tested the hypothesis that ITRI Biofilm prevents adhesion of the chest cavity. Combined extracorporeal shock wave (ECSW) + bone marrow-derived autologous endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) therapy was superior to monotherapy for improving heart function (left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]) in minipigs with ischemic cardiomyopathy (IC) induced by an ameroid constrictor applied to the mid-left anterior descending artery. The minipigs ( = 30) were equally designed into group 1 (sham-operated control), group 2 (IC), group 3 (IC + EPCs/by directly implanted into the left ventricular [LV] myocardium; 3 [+]/3[-] ITRI Biofilm), group 4 (IC + ECSW; 3 [+]/[3] - ITRI Biofilm), and group 5 (IC + EPCs-ECSW; 3 [+]/[3] - ITRI Biofilm).

Spermatogenesis is a highly regulated process dependent on androgen receptor (AR) signaling in Sertoli cells. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of spermatogenic failure, by which loss of AR impairs downstream target genes to affect Sertoli cell function, remain incompletely understood. By using microarray analysis, we identified several AR-regulated genes involved in the maturation of spermatogenesis, including chromodomain Y-like protein (CDYL) and transition proteins 1 (TNP-1), that were significantly decreased in ARKO mouse testes.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) involves different inflammation patterns, leading to subtypes characterized by either plasma cells or eosinophils, and this study aimed to compare these subtypes based on cytokine expression and disease severity.
  • The research included 53 CRSwNP patients and discovered that IL-6 levels differed between subtypes, with plasma cell-dominant individuals showing more mast cells and IgE cells, while eosinophil-dominant patients had higher objective disease severity scores.
  • The findings suggest that plasma cell-dominant inflammation correlates with subjective disease severity, highlighting IL-6, IgE, and mast cells as key differences, which could aid in clinical diagnosis and

  • The study investigates the use of Dickkopf-1 antisense (DKK1-AS) as a potential treatment for osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), addressing limitations in current treatments.
  • Analysis of serum DKK1 levels showed significant correlations with bone density metrics in OI patients and found that DKK1-AS treatment improved various aspects of bone health in OI mice.
  • Key findings indicate that DKK1-AS not only enhances bone density and structure but also positively influences osteogenic gene transcription and reduces harmful osteoclast activity in OI mice.

  • This study compared clinical outcomes between initial surgery and primary definitive radiotherapy (RT) for Taiwanese patients with cT1-2N0M0 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) between 2011 and 2019.
  • After analyzing data from over 13,500 patients and matching groups for fairness, the results showed much higher 5-year disease-specific survival rates (DSS) for the surgery group compared to the RT group (86% vs. 58%).
  • The findings suggest that initial surgery significantly improves survival outcomes in these patients, highlighting a notable survival gap of 30% between the two treatment modalities.
