Evaluation of Mexico's low cancer mortality using two national death registries.

Salud Publica Mex

April 2020

Centro de Investigación en Salud Poblacional, Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública. Mexico City, Mexico.

Objective: To compare cancer mortality rates in Mexico from two national death registries that independently code and attribute cause of death.

Materials And Methods: We compared 5-year age-standardized total cancer and sitespecific cancer mortality rates (2010-2014) from Mexico's official death registry with a death registry from a disease surveillance system. We obtained age-adjusted mortality rates and 95% confidence intervals using the direct method and World Population Prospects 2010 as a standard.

A growing literature has documented that rising concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere threaten to reduce the iron, zinc, and protein content of staple food crops including rice, wheat, barley, legumes, maize, and potatoes, potentially creating or worsening global nutritional deficiencies for over a billion people worldwide. A recent study extended these previous nutrient analyses to include B vitamins and showed that, in rice alone, the average loss of major B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, and folate) was shown to be 17-30% when grown under higher CO. Here, we employ the EAR cut-point method, using estimates of national-level nutrient supplies and requirements, to estimate how B vitamin dietary adequacy may be affected by the CO-induced loss of nutrients from rice only.

Background Imaging may play an important role in identifying high-risk plaques in patients who have carotid disease and who could benefit from surgical revascularization. We sought to evaluate the cost effectiveness of a decision-making rule based on the ultrasound imaging assessment of plaque echolucency in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Methods and Results We used a decision-analytic model to project lifetime quality-adjusted life years and costs for 5 stroke prevention strategies: (1) medical therapy only; (2) revascularization if plaque echolucency and stenosis progression to >90% are present; (3) revascularization only if plaque echolucency is present; (4) revascularization only if stenosis progression >90% is present; or (5) either plaque echolucency or stenosis progression is present.

Myoepithelial cells play key roles in normal mammary gland development and in limiting pre-invasive to invasive breast tumor progression, yet their differentiation and perturbation in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are poorly understood. Here, we investigated myoepithelial cells in normal breast tissues of BRCA1 and BRCA2 germline mutation carriers and in non-carrier controls, and in sporadic DCIS. We found that in the normal breast of non-carriers, myoepithelial cells frequently co-express the p63 and TCF7 transcription factors and that p63 and TCF7 show overlapping chromatin peaks associated with differentiated myoepithelium-specific genes.

Background Mechanisms related to the influence of diet on the development of cardiovascular disease are not entirely understood, and protein biomarkers may help to understand these pathways. Studies of biomarkers identified with multiplex proteomic methods and dietary patterns are largely lacking. Methods and Results Dietary patterns were generated through principal component analysis in 2 population-based Swedish cohorts, the EpiHealth (EpiHealth study; n=20 817 men and women) and the SMCC (Swedish Mammography Cohort Clinical [n=4650 women]).

Prostate cancer screening in low- and middle-income countries: the Mexican case.

Salud Publica Mex

February 2020

Unidad de Investigación Biomédica en Cáncer, Instituto Nacional de Cancerología and Instituto de Biomédicas. Mexico City, Mexico.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based early detection for prostate cancer is the subject of intense debate. Implementation of organized prostate cancer screening has been challenging, in part because the PSA test is so amenable to opportunistic screening. To the extent that access to cancer screening tests increases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there is an urgent need to thoughtfully evaluate existing and future cancer screening strategies to ensure benefit and control costs.

Background: Evidence linking breast size to breast cancer risk has been inconsistent, and its interpretation is often hampered by confounding factors such as body mass index (BMI). Here, we used linkage disequilibrium score regression and two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine the genetic associations between BMI, breast size and breast cancer risk.

Methods: Summary-level genotype data from 23andMe, Inc (breast size, n = 33 790), the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (breast cancer risk, n = 228 951) and the Genetic Investigation of ANthropometric Traits (BMI, n = 183 507) were used for our analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • - Lower socioeconomic status (SES), indicated by educational level and income, is linked to worse long-term outcomes after trauma, including functional limitations, chronic pain, and PTSD.
  • - A study followed 1,516 trauma patients over 36 months, revealing that low educational levels increased the odds of poor recovery, such as not returning to work/school and experiencing chronic pain.
  • - While low income also correlated with negative outcomes, sensitivity analyses showed no significant differences in long-term results based on income levels alone.

Background: Previous studies reported that ablation of low-voltage areas (LVAs) after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) improves the success rate in persistent atrial fibrillation (PerAF) patients with LVAs. However, the need for LVA ablation in addition to the posterior left atrial isolation, Box isolation (BOXI), for PerAF is unclear. We evaluated the effects of LVA ablation after BOXI for PerAF with LVAs.
